LUTHER: My original Comic Book Idea

My original comic book idea about a normal human who maintains law and order in a world where ordinary citizens include werewolves, goblins, wizards and other monsters and mythical creatures.

Here's my idea for a comic book hero. It's not a "superhero" like with a costume and secret identity but I thought it'd be a cool comic book premise so here ya go. Read all about it and tell me what you think.

In the land of Medevalia, many strange and powerful creatures roam. The land is home to the likes of vampires, werewolves, witches, goblins, trolls, and even humans. In a land with such a diverse population, the only force to maintain peace...was the Sheriffs. Long ago, the ancient citizens of Medevalia, after exhausting every method of ruling over the population finally decided that there would be no official rule. They declared that the inhabitants were free to do as they please so long as they obeyed the laws they had written which were handed down to the Sheriffs. Medevalia was then divided up into regions and each region would have its own Sheriff appointed by the locals as they saw fit. Should a Sheriff no longer enforce the law or in any way fail to fulfill his duties, the citizens would be able to relieve said Sheriff of his or her duty and appoint a new one. The Sheriff of Canaan, in the south, was Ephriam Luther.

Luther is the first human Sheriff in the history of Medevalia. Humans are usually considered too weak to protect the citizens and maintain order in a region filled with such powerful beings and are thus never appointed Sheriff unless they are skilled in the arts (magic), or are able to transform into a more powerful creature. Luther, however, is an ordinary human with no special abilities to aide him. He was originally a farmer and had his own land just outside of town. He lived peacefully with his wife, two daughters, and lychan farm hand until one night, a pack of vampires invaded his home. He and his farm hand, Jeremiah, were able to survive the brutal assault and fend off the vampires but he lost his wife, children, and his left eye (scratched out by one of the vampires). He replaced and his eye with a red glass marble his daughter used to play with and followed the vampires into town. In front of everyone, Luther confronted the vampires and killed them single handedly with nothing but a rope and a knife. After the bloody confrontation, the citizens appointed him as Sheriff and upon entering his post, the local gunsmith presented him with massive pistol that resembled a sawn-off, double-barrel shotgun with a revolving chamber. Though originally intended to be handled with two hands, Luther is able to wield the miniature shotgun with one hand. His first act as Sheriff was to name his former farm hand, Jeremiah Blud, as his deputy. Jeremiah is a lychan (werewolf) whose pack was killed during a town riot when he was a child. He wandered on to Luther's farm naked and hungry. Luther took him in and gave him a home. Since then, he helped out on his farm and became like a son to Luther.

Luther is a tall man standing 6'2 with tanned skin and long jet black hair neatly tied in a ponytail. He has a dark, five o'clock shadow and five scars around his left eye from the vampire's talons. He usually wears a white shirt with a black, collared vest and gold buttons under a heavy, charcoal long coat and black broad brimmed hat. Jeremiah is only 5'9 and has dirty blonde hair and a light beard. He usually wears a white shirt with a red bandana, long brown coat and a matching ten gallon hat. In his werewolf form, he grows to 6'3 (on his hind legs) and his body is covered in brown hair with a wolf's face and sharp claws. He carries two silver revolvers with white handles while on duty. Together, the two men keep law and order in the Canaan Region.

To avoid a sort of Western motif with monsters, I decided I wanted this world to have a Dark Ages theme to it as well so it would also have ideas like knights and wizards and kings so while there would be some "cowboys" running around, I want to make sure it's unique from that.

Here's an idea of the characters are supposed to look like. If anyone would like submit a design, I'd love to see it (I couldn't use my scanner so I had to take a picture and edit it):

@Leee777 Thanks man.

I thought those were original names. I mean yeah, everytime you hear "Luther" in a comic book you're prolly gonna think of "Lex Luthor" but I just thought it sounded like a cool name. Plus he's a good guy. Also he's not supposed to be like a Wolverine-esque Anti-hero but like a kind well-respected yet badass lawman.

Also, I pictured like Goblins to be in an organized gang that he takes on and like maybe a vampire that's a serial killer or a werewolf who pulls off heists. Pretty much normal criminals but they happen to be monsters. I appreciate your comment.

; D

Anyways a few more pics or your character on film (ya never know man), ppl wont be thinking LUTHOR anyway!

Yeah luv the Wolverine-esque Anti-hero but like a kind well-respected yet badass lawman thing going on!!!

And your Goblin gangs, Werewolf thieves, Vamp serial killers etc, very original dude, never been done as far as i know, you should shop that about!

You never know... great stuff man!

I like the concept, but if you were ever going to write this you would need to tweek a few things. The name of the world that this is based in, for one, sounds ridiculous. The play on "Medieval" is too tacky and obvious. The way you wrote this summary was a bit off also. I didn't like how you kept switching from past to present tense. When writing something like this, it's best to keep it present tense, that way you don't sound like you're telling some kind of fairy tale. All criticism aside, I hope that you can make this work because it sounds very interesting. I've always wanted to do a genre-mixed comic of goth monsters and something else, but I could never figure anything out. I like how you mixed western, monster, and fantasy, though the type of fantasy you're implementing doesn't often coincide with the classic monster mythos (goblins and wizards aren't often found in the same realm as vampires and lycans). Again, good concept! :)

@AxlKomix
The past/present tense thing is something i always seem to have an issue with :P I keep thinking of it as already happened I guess but i'll work on it.

@Joekerr93
Thanks man. I'll work on some more pics and hopefully I can use my scanner.

This sounds pretty awesome. Sounds like Castlevania and Van Helsing meets 3: 10 to Yuma but cooler and different. Like the name "Luther" and the whole Sheriff concept. You should expand on it!

@Batcave
That's actually a fairly accurate description. Van Helsing was kind of the inspiration. This guy's not backed up by the Catholic Church though haha.

I also have a rule when it comes to my comic book ideas. The Hero is NOT the "chosen one" and the villain did NOT "kill his father". This basically means that later we're not gonna find out that Luther was actually a superpowered being whose powers laid dormant or that every major villain he faces will have some connection to a tragedy in his life. I wanna avoid cliches.

After reading it, I think it sounds pretty cool. But not knowing what it was at first, your description made it seem like it was taking after the show Ugly Americans

Haha wow. Not my intention. I've seen that show. It can be funny but I get the feeling I'm gonna get really tired of it. Anyways, thanks. I'm working on a few stories of it so I may post some soon.
