So how does Bucky fit in again?

So how does Bucky fit in again?

Now I want you to bear with me here. I don't have as vast a comicbook knowledge as many of you have. But still there is one thing that tingles my mind, when it comes to the upcoming Captain America movie. How are they planning on using Bucky?

Yeah, I know. The question to that answer is...kind of easy to answer. Example: He could be some young soldier that Cap meets and really motivates and then he becomes his sidekick or sort of and dons a costume or maybe they just have him in standard army attire.

But that isn’t really my problem here. My problem is that they cannot explore the character deeper than this one movie.

How come you ask? Well let me elaborate.

Just yesterday news reported that Robert Buckley was in the hunt for the role of Bucky. And though their names are a solid match, that would mean that Bucky is gonna be about the same age as Cap, seing as they’re casting call for Captain America had the age limitations 33 and Buckley is 28 years old. Now that wasn’t really a problem back when they made the comics, but today if Cap was awaken from his frozen hibernation, Bucky would be between 80-90 years old, depending on how good they are making Buckley appear younger than he is.

So as you see good ol’ Winter Soldier would be...Well, Old! And in no condition to fight bad guys and take up the mantle and wield the shield, when and if Marvel chooses to go with the death of Cap in the future. Now I know that it is long stretches and theories I’m throwing at you here, but I think it is valid to ask the question: “How does Bucky fit in?”. Will they just use him in the First Avenger film? Will he be featured heavily or just appear as a cameo? Will he don a costume or will he just be a random soldier, who forms a bond with our beloved Captain?

I’m not really the biggest fan of Bucky as you may realize. And I’m pretty sure some of you know a thing or two about how the comics have dealt with this problem of lately. Because I cannot believe if they haven’t sniffed at it. If not, then maybe they should just save him for future Avengers films or something along those lines.

Well no matter what. I want to hear your opinions on this? So please sound of below and remember to: KEEP ON TRUCKING!

I like the idea of just a soldier that Captain forms a bond with. Maybe he could don the costume briefly to back up Captain as a favor for one of the USO things just as a nod to comic fans but I prefer him as just a soldier. He should be young though, like a teenager. Or barely pushing 20 or something.

Well im not sure but,,,,,

It'll probably be him being CAP's sidekick! ; P

Anyways what MARVEL should do is have BUCKY and the INVADERS for that matter, in a 3 to 5 minute clip that flashes through the years, when CAP's a success they can expore them years more in a INVADERS movie spun from FIRST AVENGER, you know the spin off movie!

Well it makes sense... sorta! : D

So you know that Bucky became the Winter Soldier, right? Winter Soldier was the codename for a secret project in Soviet Russia for covert ops. Bucky was found in the Atlantic after Cap's and his final mission together. He was brainwashed, kept in cryostasis most of the time, then brought out to go assassinate people. When the mission was over, he'd go back into the freezer, which is why he's only aged a little since WWII. They could easily do a spin-off movie about this story arc.

I hope he's a soldier who looks up to Cap and befriends him. I like to think of him as a young soldier who wants to prove his worth, isn't a slouch on the battlefield, instead actually being quite good (come on, you have to make Bucky at least a little bad-ass/cool). He's kind of naive, but does have good intentions and a good heart, even though that sounded cheesy as f*ck.

Personally, I'd love a scene taking place in one of the boats on D-Day, where Bucky, Cap, and Union Jack are in the same boat together. Bucky's like (and I'm not a professional dialog writer here, this is a simplistic outline) "So you're Captain America, right?" and starts asking him about stuff and stuff, the other soldiers are in the background shaking nervously. Union Jack throws in a couple jabs at Americans (or not LOL), etc, etc. Basically, I just want a scene on one of the boats to be a dialog scene between those 3.

But OhioJones summed up Bucky's arc up to the present day pretty well.

Oh, and Jamie Bell for Bucky :)

Everyone has summed up the age part pretty well.

There has been a rumor floating around that the Bucky Character would be telling the WWII story as today's Cap until he is found frozen. Don't know if its true or not, but it would be an interesting story device.

Fastest way to ruin this movie...put Bucky in it. Batman Begins by far has been the best Batman yet...no Robin!
OhioJones
OhioJones - 3/3/2010, 7:39 PM
@Jimdlux Bucky is not Robin. Cap and Bucky are closer to the same age, and Bucky is actually a more seasoned fighter than Steve. Robin is a sidekick. Bucky is a partner.

Someone who is friends with Scott Porter posted this on ONTD ( http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/44645144.html )

"yeah he (Porter) didnt get Captain I was so upset with him I was hanging out with him friday night and he just found out a few days ago... I think John Kransinski is getting it he said."

"yeah apparently the director is Emily Blunts close friend or something and thats how John got asked to test for it and I heard hes a shoe in from Scott."

"I'm not 100% its just what scott told me friday that he wasnt proally getting it because of john's relationship with Emily and her relationship with the director whom i think directed Young Victoria or something."

Wow if this is real then we and cap are doomed! DOOMED!

@all: Thanks everyone for all the great responses. So which books should I look into, if I want to know more about Bucky and how he serves as a partner to cap.
And to answer on of your questions: Yes, I know he is Winter Soldier and that he got an mechanical arm and was trained to assasinate... But it is only things I've heard or read of and not actually read from a comic issue. So I would be very thankful if you guys could tell me which ones I Should definitely check out in order to answer my own questions!

Oh and I also like the Saving Private Ryan idea, where he is telling the story of Cap in a flashback :)

@Lucky
Get the Winter Soldier series. Its two or three bigger books collecting the whole story arc. Its basically when Cap started to get really good again. The beginning of Brubaker's run.

@Ohio & @Anil: Will do in time to watch the movie. Always knew I had to read some Brubaker, I'm ashamed of myself that I haven't yet.

Oh and nice ending Anil, that would be really great and would beautifully pave the way for the Avengers. Nice going buddy! :)

@ luckykid

whats up buddy. yeah, they've already answered it, but he was kept in stasis for a long time, so he didn't age as much, similar to Cap being frozen.

i don't like the idea of the Cap movie being in the present at the beginning and end of the film. i personally think the whole thing should be in WWII, and it should end with Cap falling into the freezing water, with some sad/heroic music playing as the screen fades out, kind of like a cliff-hanger type deal, make people think he died. (except us comic fans of course) then the Avengers should start with them finding his body.

thats how i always thought it should go.

@Corndog: Hey bud, how is life on the big bad blacklist, lol ;) - In my opinion it is near impossible to [frick] it completely up wether they do the flashback or the all WWII vers. It still depends on how the overall story is done, that is what worries me.
