Superman: The Fan Cast

Superman: The Fan Cast

Like my previous Green Lantern and Avenger fan casts, I will share with you my top choices to portray the characters of the Superman universe.

Again, I would like to thank you guys for the positive feedback from my Green Lantern fan cast. I hope you enjoy this one as well.

We all know who I'm going to cast first. The Blue Boy Scout, The Last Son of Krypton, the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Now, before I finally decided on whom to cast, I was on the Henry Cavill bandwagon. However, he is not the one I am picking for Supes. But, I do have him in mind for another character in the DC universe which you'll likely find out in my next fan cast (hint: Justice League.) Rather, I am choosing someone who I believe is probably the best choice for the role, and coincidentally, the most popular. This man has the build of Superman, the look for Superman, and the chops to tackle Superman as a character. He has grown a lot since 2006, both physically from Superboy to Superman, and acting wise, as he wouldn't have to give us a Reeve impersonation and could give us an original take on Superman. He deserves another chance, especially without Shitsinger breathing "Christopher Reeve, Christopher Reeve" to him every scene. Guys, my pick for Superman, is.........Brandon Routh!

And next we have Superman's legendary love, one of DC's most famous female characters, Lois Lane. A tough as nails, smart, and sharp reporter, Lois is one of the most important characters in the Superman mythos. After the disaster that was Kate Bosworth, I think a change is in order here. We need an experienced, sexy, and actually intelligent Lois Lane, not some 15 year old looking, b*tchy, wooden Lois. And this actress, IMO, has the perfect look. She has the sexiness and intelligence to make Lois a memorable character this time. She received praise for her performances in "Gone Baby Gone" opposite Casey Affleck, and also starred in "Eagle Eye," opposite Shia Leboooooofffff. It is Michelle Monaghan as Lois Lane!

We now move on to Superman's arch nemesis, Lex Luthor. I for one actually liked Kevin Spacey as Lex in SR, but the script just had him a little too campy. This Lex should be the powerful owner of a company, probably something like LexCorp, but is corrupt and power hungry, not a loony real estate tycoon. I would like to see Lex slowly devolve into a villain throughout the film, very similar to what happened with Hugh Jackman's character in the Prestige (one of my favorite movies.) I also want him to have a brilliant mind, as in the DC animated universe. However, like Carol Ferris, I have two suggestions for Lex. It will seem like there's an obvious winner here but I really like both actors and I would be very happy if either one was Lex. So, I give you Daniel Day Lewis and Viggo Mortensen as Lex Luthor!

I will go on to the Daily Planet family, namely Jimmy and Perry.

I begin with Jimmy Olsen. This young, naive, but determined photographer has been featured in almost every form of media Superman has. The last live action portrayal of Jimmy was in SR, played by Sam Huntington. Now, I didn't mind Huntington as Jimmy, but he was thinly written and given next to nothing to do. I pretty much knew I wasn't going to get a lot of love for whomever I picked as Jimmy. But I think this young actor is a fine pick. He has mostly starred in comedies, but you don't have to have Anthony Hopkins' record to play Jimmy. And, he was always really funny to me. I choose Chris Marquette for Jimmy Olsen!

Now for Perry White. This character was basically wasted in SR, as the only thing he did was almost get killed while not moving as a huge metal globe was about to crush every bone in his body. He should have a more exposed role, instead of always sitting in his office off screen. And I think this actor would steal scenes as Perry. He is one of my favorite actors, despite a very bad performance in a certain Batman film. However, he has proven himself time and again, with terrific turns in "The Fugitive" and "No Country For Old Men." I can just imagine that famous hollering voice yelling inside the Daily Planet offices now. I give you Tommy Lee Jones as Perry White!

Now we move on to Krypton, well only Jor-El and Lara.

For Jor-El, I wanted someone who looked experienced but not as old as someone say Perry's age. I was looking in the early 40's range, and I found him. I have seen a lot of support for this actor to be Supes himself, but I think he is a bit too old, and I think he is better suited for Jor-El. He is famous for his starring role as Jesus Christ in The Passion of The Christ, and you definitely know who I am talking about now, so here is Jim Caviezel as Jor-El!

Now for Lara, I wanted an actress who was very elegant and graceful looking. I've found just the right actress who could bring those attributes to the table. She played a Spartan mother in "300," and Sarah Conner in the Terminator tv series. It is Lena Headey as Lara!

Now I move to cast Ma and Pa Kent of Smallville. I'll start with Papa Jonathan Kent. Originally, I wasn't sure whom to cast as Pa Kent, as there are a ton of actors that could pull it off. The actor I chose is one I think you'll like. Recently, he had a supporting role in the blockbuster new "Star Trek ," and was also in the (IMO) underrated "I, Robot." Here is Bruce Greenwood as Jonathan Kent!

And now for Ma Kent. Ma Kent needs to be motherly, sweet, and nurturing. This actress is very good at those things, and has been nominated for an Academy Award numerous times. I choose Julianne Moore as Martha Kent!

Okay, now I'll start getting into villains. First up will be Darkseid. Darkseid is a very cool villain, and he needs an intimidating actor to play him. I think it will be fairly obvious as to whom I pick, as he is one of the most popular choices to play the Lord of Apokolips. I think I would rather have this actor portray Apocalypse from the X-Men universe than Darkseid, but as Ryan Reynolds has proven, there is no law against one actor playing a Marvel and a DC character. I say it should be Michael Clarke Duncan as Darkseid!

And now we come to Mongul. Mongul isn't very interesting to me as a villain, as he is extremely one dimensional and particularly boring. However, I decided to cast him. This actor would likely not physically portray Mongul, but his voice is why I'm mainly casting him. This actor has a great voice and I think it would fit Mongul greatly. The actor is best known for his starring role as Hellboy, and that's right, I choose Ron Perlman as Mongul!

And for my last casting, I choose Brainiac. I think that Brainiac should be in the next Superman film and he should be a main antagonist for Supes to actually hit and fight. I had to find the right actor who could bring that perfect robotic, yet also alien voice, and it must be calm but all knowing as well. Quite a task for an actor. I would like to see Brainiac portrayed as an alien/robotic hybrid, mixing the green alien look found in the comics with the pure robot found in the DC animated universe. I know exactly who should be Brainiac. I have mentioned this actor in my previous GL fan cast, and I have finally found the right character for him. I give you all....................................HUGO WEAVING AS BRAINIAC!!!!

And that is the end of my Superman fan cast. As always, your comments and opinions are very welcome. I am excited to hear your opinions. Thanks for reading.

Great job man...TLJ as Perry White is a good choice...I liked Gabriel Burn, I think the point is to have a non-traditional boss vibe for the character, make him less generic, otherwise he's just another JJ Jameson...and no one can hold a candle to JK Simmons

I agree with several of your choices especially Brandon Routh as Clark/Superman. I rather liked Sam Huntington as Jimmy. He looked the part of the red haired sidekick I remembered from classic comics.

I also thought the Luthor and Perry were well cast in SR.

Tommy Lee Jones seem too rough cut for the editor to me. He would better fit someone like Inspector Henderson.

I would rather see Jackie Earl Haley as Red Skull, and DDL is such an amazing actor I am sure he could pull Lex off in spades. And I firmly believe that we need Lex as a character. He is arguably the most important character in the Superman mythos, next to Superman. But he wouldn't be the main antagonist as he has been for what, every Superman movie? Way I see it, Brainiac should be the main villain, but as the movie goes on, Lex deteriorates into the madman we all know and love from the comics.

Wow, that IS an amazing cast!!! The only one i'd have i mild preference for would be to have Michael Keaton as LEX but i'll agree that DDL is a great choice. Not Viggo.

@Shaman, I like Michael Keaton as Lex, the only problem I would have is that I see Lex as someone who could give Supes a run for his money as far as his appearence...someone who, if all things were equal, could kick Supes ass...Keaton is getting a bit long in the tooth now though

I've never liked the portrayal of Lex as a guy that could kick Sups ass. He represents humanity against a god, witts against brawn, that would kinda defy his purpose IMO. I like him to be a ruthless business savy entrepreneur that has experience in his field. So him being weathered i find is a good thing. The "animated Series" portrayal always left me perpLEXed because of Lex's size compared to Sups.

Normally, Ralph Fiennes would be freaking amazing to me as Red Skull, but it just seems so typecast with him as Hades in Clash of the Titans and as Voldemort in Harry Potter.

Rachel Mcadams would be good as Lois, but she does look really young and not that experienced look that I think Monaghan has. Kevin Durand as Lobo? Awesome. Great choice there. I will agree, I didn't think Spacey was bad as Lex. He did the best with what he had, and that's where Lex went wrong. He was written as too campy and comedic, where as Lex should be written as serious and overconfidant.

WOW, Keven Durand is by far the best choice i've heard to play Lobo!!!

But Tyler's Lois pic is Perfect ;)

Tyler- Can you imagine Batman ever becoming Lex??? It would be awesome!!! His personality in Pacific Heights and Desparate Measures would be nothing short of astonishing for Lex :)) It's a shame people refer to his performances in Multiplicity and Beetlejuice all the time, the guy is one of the most talented actors ever!!!
