Three Reasons To Be Excited For The Amazing Spider-Man 2!

Expect Mysterio, Electro, Rhino, maybe even Green Goblin to make an appearance by the end and we should be prepared to have Sony FINALLY go all-out for the Spider-Man universe, bringing us a wider range of villains to keep the webslinger on his toes at all times.

Hey, look! It's Mysterio!

STRONGER, MORE INTIMIDATING VILLAINS FOR SPIDER-MAN TO FACE

With more villains added to the mix early on for this already planned trilogy, my personal favourite being the high probability of seeing Mysterio on the big screen, the filmmakers have the potential to create a rich, vibrant storyline by having the villains craft an even more dangerous atmosphere for the webslinger to endure; that of course being fronted by none other than the puppeteer himself, Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, who'll be played by the always decent Chris Cooper.

The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man was weak at best, and this was due to either (more often than not) terrible visual effects on the creature, that made him look a bit like Venom from Spider-Man 3 in certain shots, or for the fact that the film was basically an exact retelling of 2002's Spider-Man, The Lizard and Green Goblin both have the EXACT same Jekyll and Hyde type turn. That plot would have worked, if only the film had been a little bit more lighter and laid back in tone, but it wasn't, and so it mixes up the unnecessary seriousness from the first-half with the Golden Age spirit of the Spider-Man that they try too hard to convey in the last-half of the movie but fall flat because of an unrealistic, underdeveloped villain.

[To clear it up though, The Amazing Spider-Man is not a bad film (at all), it's a solid film turned into a bad one because of a bad editing job. The film just makes some lazy decisions thanks to having an editor who wasn't paying closer attention to his job of trying to tell a coherent and original Spider-Man story, it felt like it jerked around too much, and too sloppily at that. All the little fossils that they missed are in the deleted scenes, even the trailer, which makes Irrfan Khan's character out to be a little bit more threatening than he comes across as in the actual movie; like hinting more at Norman Osborn and the threat that he poses to Peter. More focus on The Lizard/Curt Connors would have been great and some of the cheesier moments (like the basketball net, and the balcony scene with Gwen, for example) just need to go, but with that aside, it's a movie I could see myself trying out again if the sequel expands a bit more on most of the things it left unanswered.]

With The Amazing Spider-Man 2, there's drastic room for improvement with the potential for about four or five classic villains to make appearance and that's pretty massive. Electro is apparently the main villain in this one. But the Green Goblin should definitely come into play as well, at least by the end of it because if they really continued with the Gwen/Peter relationship for yet another movie, that would be ridiculous, as this one should be their final nail in the coffin. Seriously, Peter made an obvious mistake at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man, he broke his promise to Capt. Stacy about staying away from Gwen. Ring any bells? Rhino is said to be called into the action as well, and he'll be played by none other than Paul Giamatti; in what is a surprising, but inspiring casting choice. And add to that the potential for Mysterio to finally make his first appearance on the big-screen and you have all the more reason to be excited (the newest set photo potentially reveals the actor who'll be playing Quentin Beck, maybe even Chameleon, or maybe even Alistair Smythe).

But I'm putting my money on it that he's Quentin Beck though, I've been wanting to see Mysterio on the big-screen for quite some time now and I think he'd pose a perfect threat to The Amazing Spider-Man.

MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, LESS ROMANCE, REAL STAKES

More supporting characters added to the mix makes this new instalment an attention grabber because it allows more time to develop characters we don't already know, all the while, at the same time, building on ones that we are already familiar with from the previous trilogy (like Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborn).

Shailene Woodley will do just fine as Mary Jane.

This is definitely more of a supporting role for her character as opposed to a part-lead role (like her character was in the previous trilogy), the newly cast actress has finished shooting on the movie and it looks as if she's not going to overstay her welcome; which is spectacular considering many, including myself, thought that Kirsten Dunst overstayed her welcome as Mary Jane before. It's nice to see the filmmakers are now, literally, trying their best to stray away from the original two movies by introducing new villains and supporting characters faster. The faster the characters come in, the better chances for better, more action-oriented stories for what will probably be the final two entries in the series. Hopefully they don't have too much Aunt May in it this time either, I didn't mind Sally Field but she did have a lot of cheesy lines ("If there's one thing you are, it's good.") and there was enough Aunt May to last a lifetime in the previous instalments, so keep it focused on the new players rather than the old ones and give everyone their own moment in the spotlight (especially the villains of the show).

Plus expect Jamie Foxx to be really great as Electro in this, especially if he puts in the same amount of energy as he did during his previous couple of movies (which he has very much indeed, so have no fear).

SPIDER-MAN MUST BE DEFEATED BY THE END OF THE MOVIE

With the set-up for Gwen Stacy's downfall already in the works, because of the promise Peter broke to Captain Stacy by the end of the first film, this should definitely be Spider-Man's darkest, most devastating chapter told on the big-screen yet.

If the filmmakers are smart and are actually going in the direction that they teased at with the first film, then this sequel should end by leaving Spider-Man in his most vulnerable state on-screen yet. For one, he has Harry Osborn come back into his life, who could either be Peter's friend or foe at this point, and he hasn't seen him since he was a kid, so there should be a lot of good drama brewing from their fractured relationship. Add to that a handful of villains, not too mention Norman Osborn at the top of it all (literally, either chilling in his tower/suite or prowling around as the Green Goblin), and Peter should definitely have genuine reason to be afraid in this instalment. If they choose to have Gwen Stacy's death in this one, which would be wise, I do hope that they make it as close to the comics as humanly possible because it's a sequence that I've never been able to forget about from the stories that I've read of Spider-Man and it would make the grittiness that they developed in the first one seem a lot more suitable since horrible stuff will be happening more often.

So, therefore, the final instalment in this trilogy should be Spider-Man getting his revenge against the Green Goblin for the murder of who is arguably his greatest lover, Gwen Stacy. If they could pull off her death, and make it as devastating as it should be to the hero, then it could very well be the most tragic climax to a comic book movie to date.

ALSO SPIDEY'S SUIT LOOKS BETTER THAN EVER (AND THEY'RE STILL DOING A LOT OF REAL STUNTS FOR THE WEBSWINGING AND STUFF)!

Spider-Man's new suit is very striking on the eyes this time around, especially compared to the last one because of how much was shot at night and the weird looking eye lenses. These new ones look slick and have a nice pop to them, very cool to see. It may be the best Spidey costume yet, but I'll have to see it on the big-screen before I judge fully.

I actually was excited for it, for a spell.
Then Chris Cooper was announced as Norman. The man is a bore to watch. I've never found him remotely interesting in anything I've seen him in, whether it's the Bourne Identity, American Beauty, October Sky, not even the Patriot.

Really, that's my only legitimate complaint with the movie thusfar. You know, MJ is looking a little young compared to Peter, but I can get over that. I just really like my villains, you know.

Cool article, man. Love the format with the bold sentences as your points, the italics as your proof, and your regular font as your explanation. Great way to keep your article organized but thorough!

I just don't see how speeding up the introduction of characters can build stronger and more complex relationships considering how much they are cramming into one movie. Seems like a lot to cover, especially with Marc Webb's lax and slow character development style.

Your last point is interesting. Do you think that they will really kill Gwen in the 2nd film? I think they might for shock value. At this point, no one is expecting her to die. If they kill Gwen in the 3rd one, wouldn't we be expecting it?

Anyway, good read, and lovin' the format.

While I do have some big issues with the first one, they are more to do with Sony screwing around with the movie. Now that the new franchise is established and the origin is out the way hopefully they will let Marc Webb make the movie he wants to make. I'm really excited for the sequel due to the cast and new writers. But this movie has to be really good because this movie is either going to make or break this new franchise.

the first movie was average with some good moments but saying that it did show potential.

at the moment the three things i'm excited about is the costume, norman osborn & electro.

This movie will make this franchise, it's bringing in huge revenue for New York City: http://www.amny.com/urbanite-1.812039/spider-man-s-newest-flick-creates-super-economic-boon-for-state-1.4808929

This film will be THE HIGHEST GROSSING MOVIE OF 2014, guaranteed. It's basically in Iron Man 3 and The Avenger's slot next summer, so, therefore, it's gonna be making a killing at the BO, and I'm actually excited to see it happen. Bring it on!

While I do also think the movie is running the risk of becoming overcrowded, I think the only things that will be a big part of the movie are peters past which will be linked with Harry, Norman and oscorp, and electro. I can't see the rhino being anything more than a throwaway villain that spidey fights early on in the movie, and its obvious that MJ is not going to have a big role due to shailene woodley already finishing her parts of the film after only about 3 weeks worth of filming. Colm feore I think will be either an employee of oscorp or the bugle, maybe even Jameson. And felicity jones is probably going to be Betty brant.

The first movie did have it's moments, but it also had a lot of bad ones as well, like Irrfan Khan turning in an unintentionally hilarious performance as Ratha (who's supposed to be serious, right?), some overly cheesy musical cues (that actually made me feel embarrassed at certain points) and everything to do with The Lizard was way too underdeveloped and rushed. All-in-all, it just felt like a lazy reboot of the original at one too many points, but it did in fact have it's shining moments. However, most of the time they're just ruined by the rush job editing.

Spideyguy94, for this trilogy, plenty of villains is good enough. It's time to separate itself from being compared to The Dark Knight franchise with it's grittiness. Bring in the villains, you've got the fun-factor done if you know how to do it right and I think that they'll do it right indeed. I'm expecting this to be nothing less than an amazing superhero movie.
marvel72

that is one thing sony has got right, they've given us a different villain in each spider-man film,so far.

spider-man (green goblin)
spider-man 2 (doc ock)
spider-man 3 (sandman & venom)

the amazing spider-man (lizard)
the amazing spider-man 2 (electro & maybe the rhino)

we don't know if norman osborn is just osborn or he'll be the goblin as well.

you can't say that with all the batman films.

Yeah, but this is Spider-Man. Nolan wanted "realism" with his trilogy. Webb seems to be okay with the fantasy aspect of Spider-Man. I'll give credit when it's deserved, and Marc Webb deserves it, as he made a very bold move in making The Lizard the very first villain for Spidey to face-off against. Now, The Lizard wasn't a great villain in my eyes, at all, but most people seem to be fine with him, so that's all good (let's move on). The difference in the new one is that the villains will all have faces and will be played by strong actors. So have a little faith.

My problem is Rhino. For some reason, he just feels forced in. I'm fine with Electro seeing how they're completely changing the character. He's a good enough challenge for Spidey. Rhino is unnecessary. My biggest appeal for this movie is the same with TASM, the insanely talented cast they put together. I'm an obvious supporter of The Lizard in the first film and think he was portrayed and written just fine. He wasn't a copy cat of Green Goblin unless you've never read a Spider-Man comic. Could've added more depth but, that's bout it in that part of the subject. Green Goblin, The Lizard and yes, Venom are the only Spider-Man villains in the movies that have felt like a real threat. Am I looking forward to TASM 2? Yes but, I'm going to remain cautious bout it until I see a theatrical trailer.

Also, Gwen must die in the third by the hand of the Green Goblin. It also must be the end of the trilogy. No more Spider-Man movies for awhile after until its time for another reboot.

I agree, there is a lot to look forward to. I am looking forward to seeing Electro's first look on screen. He could very easily look tacky but lets hope they make him look dark and badass. Both he and Rhino could make for some awesome physical fights. Also I agree on your comments on Lizard. He was poorly realised in the movie which I completely blame Marc Webb for. I'm HOPING we might see Mysterio and Green Goblin in the one after. Fingers crossed. Osborn introductions should be cool and fun and Ooh yes, and we have Channing Tatum in a wig playing Mary Jane. ;)

I'm cautiously optimistic for this movie. I'll admit that some of the stuff I've heard has worried me a bit, but I felt the same about the last movie and now I absolutely love it, so that gives me hope. Plus, Jamie Foxx is awesome, so you can pretty much guarantee that, even if the film does turn out badly, Foxx will still be entertaining to watch.
AC1
AC1 - 3/18/2013, 1:44 AM
I don't really think Lizard was a bad villain in TASM. He could have been written much better, but he held up well in the movie. He was a good choice of villain, because he was the physical embodiment of the theme of the movie - searching for the missing piece of yourself, and how that journey will change you.

Maybe they should have steered clear of the Jekyll/Hyde aspects of the character to distinguish him from Green Goblin in Raimi's movies, but I think that characteristic belongs to Lizard more than any of Spidey's other villains.

He was a pretty over the top villain, and definitely hearkened back to the themes of the original Spider-Man comics but in a slightly darker, more contemporary way. Perhaps he was mismatched to the tone of the movie for some, but I thought he fit in fine.

@ thejon93rd

i was referring to how many times we've seen the same villain in batman films compared to a different one in each spidey film.

-the joker (batman & the dark knight)
-catwoman/selina kyle (batman returns & the dark knight rises)
-two face/harvey dent (batman, batman forever & the dark knight)
-bane (batman & robin & the dark knight rises)
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 3/18/2013, 6:54 AM
@LEVITIKUZ they can't treat it like TASM never happened. It's a sequel that has a lot to explain that the other didn't, and I can't think of a comic book movie sequel in the last 10 years that didn't build upon what happened previously. The raimi trilogy and the dark knight trilogy are the perfect examples for that.

I didn't like the love story angles in Thor and Green Lantern, but I liked it in the first Iron Man because they actually did have chemistry (Robert Downey Jr. had chemistry with everyone in that movie, he was amazing).

lizard@ another reboot lol?! what do you want to see in the next reboot? peter parker looses uncle Ben, he meets Gwen Stacy in High School.... etc all over again?

please sony just continue the story, and expand the universe the way you are doing.

-6 to 9 spiderman movie series
-venon spin off
- about 20 villains who could be used
- many stories could be adapted
- join avengers

many thing that could benefit if they continue.
if they reboot get ready for another uncle ben great power and responsibility story retold.
