"X-Men Legends: Cable"--The Animated Movie

"X-Men Legends: Cable"--The Animated Movie

A fancast for an animated film based on "Cable: Blood and Metal".

Cable is one of those characters that falls into the love 'im or hate 'im category, and with good reasons for the 'hate 'im':
1. Partially created by one of the most reviled artists by fans everywhere, Rob Liefeld.
2. Super-convoluted origin (oh wait, son of Cyclops and "Jean Grey" infected with techno-organic virus sent into the future; returns as a grown and grizzled man--even I can get that...)
3. Example of 90's excesses in comics, inspiring Alex Ross and Mark Waid's "Kingdom Come" (in the form of Magog).

But, from time to time, there have been good stories featuring the character, and when you take away the ridiculously-large guns and shoulder pads, you can get a pretty decent story--as long as the art's good, too. One such (according to most people, as I have not read the story yet) was the 1992 Fabian Nicieza/John Romita Jr. 2-issue mini "Cable: Blood and Metal".

The story, told half in flashback, expands upon Cable's time as a mercenary, leading the commando unit Six Pack against his archenemy Stryfe--and also explaining why everyone's got a beef with the Askani-son. When thinking of something to fill the gap until I did my "Rogue and Gambit" fancast, I thought this story would be a decent entry in my "X-Men Legends" series of animated film ideas. So here's how it'd work:
-DVD cover art by Ariel Olivetti (who was the artist for the 2008 volume of "Cable".
-Voice direction by Jamie Simone (who has been doing the voice direction for a lot of Marvel cartoons as of late).
-Screenplay by Nicieza and Chris Yost (who worked on Wolverine and the X-Men, the cartoon series).
-Direction by Lauren Montgomery.
-Art/animation style by Sean "Cheeks" Galloway, the guy behind the looks of "The Spectacular Spider-Man" animated series and the two animated "Hellboy" films. Why? Because John Romita Jr. is also one of those love 'em or hate 'em types in the comic industry, and hey, if Galloway's style worked fine for Hellboy, it can work for Cable.

With that, let's move on to my ideal voice cast for this picture:

Michael Pare as the voice of Cable/Nathan Summers and Stryfe

The closest thing Pare has to superhero experience was his recurring role on "The Greatest American Hero", but what really inspired my picking him for Cable was his voice and two of his film roles, in movies I saw this year that both happen to be from 1984: "Streets of Fire" (which shows his gun-toting tough-guy chops) and "The Philadelphia Experiment" (which gives him experience with time travel in the movies).
In this film, Cable would be wearing the getup you see right now, but with all dark blue pants, light blue top, and the straps and boots are brown--basically his early 90's color palette, without the big guns and shoulder pads. And of course, since Stryfe is Cable's clone, Pare would voice him as well.

Minka Kelly as the voice of Domino/Neena Thurman

A lot of people really liked my casting Kelly as the voice of Domino for my "X-Men Legends: Domino" fancast, so I brought her back for this one. The same reasons apply: her work in the short-lived "Charlie's Angels" remake inspired this pick. Domino's getup would be the one from Wolverine and the X-Men. MUCH better than her early look.

Jim Kelly as the voice of G.W. Bridge

Bruce Lee's magnum opus "Enter the Dragon" is one of my favorite movies, and Kelly did a good job in it. I think he'd have a decent voice for this veteran soldier and SHIELD agent.

Timothy Olyphant as the voice of Weapon X/Garrison Kane

Picking Olyphant was inspired by how so many people here fancast him as characters like Deadshot--and mostly draw inspiration from his roles on "Torchwood" and "Justified". So I figured, maybe give him an obscure character, I'm sure he'd have a decent voice for him.

Aldis Hodge as the voice of Hammer

I picked him to voice Hammer as both Hammer and Hodge's character on "Leverage" are tech specialists--and of course, Hodge is lobbying for the role of Black Panther.

Jason Momoa as the voice of Grizzly

I figured Momoa would work for voicing Grizzly as he's played his fair share of big n' scary dudes, the most recent being a certain barbarian. Here though, it would be a big n' scary dude in the "mighty Marvel manner".

Stephen Lang as the voice of General Clarke

Lang came to mind when this character came up. Believe it or not, I originally went with Robert Forster, but thought, eh, go with the guy I used for John Lynch in my Gen 13 fancast.

Robin Shou as the voice of Silver Samurai

Shou has a ton of experience acting in the martial arts film genre, and I thought his voice would be suitable for a character engrained in that setting (most of the time). And it'd be nice to see more of ol' Harada, since he's only had three appearances in different media (the 90's X-Men cartoon, Wolverine and the X-Men, and the X-Men Legends video games).

I couldn't come up with some additional voices in time (they would've been members of the Mutant Liberation Front anyway), so for now, that is that! For taking the time to look at this, I leave you now with the sounds of Sammy Hagar:

Great stuff, but I think either Mark Valley or Adam Baldwin should voice Cable. Anyway, can you check out my Secret Avengers cast?

Believe it or not, I actually thought Adam Baldwin would've made a good Cable for Wolverine and the X-Men (along with Will Friedle as the voice of X-Man/Nate Grey).

Anyway, I make it a vow to not use actors more than once, though Baldwin (and now Lang) are minor exceptions.

- I never got into Michael Pare's work. You probably aren't aware, he did an Uwe Boll film, Postal. So I really can't say anything about it. I'd like to see John DiMaggio voice Cable; Marcus Fenix's voice sounds just like how Cable in the 2D world should.
- I'd like someone with a thicker voice than Minka Kelly voice Domino. Why not Gwendolyn Yeo, she did great in Wolverine and the X-Men. Or Jennifer Hale, especially after hearing her as Jean Grey and Naomi Hunter.
- Jim Kelly? You mean from the blaxploitation era? Sign me up!
- Gotta say, throwing Aldis Hodge in an animated film is sweetness, as is Jason Momoa.
- Nice to see Stephen Lang in as a little Easter egg, since he wants to portray Cable.

Hey, you oughtta check out my new fancast for Daredevil when you get to it.

Regarding a few of your points--
1. I haven't seen a lot a Pare's work (I do want to see "Eddie and the Cruisers"), and a friend of mine has told me to avoid Uwe Boll's work like the plague. Also, DiMaggio's got, in my opinion, too much of a Jersey twinge for a character like Cable, even when he hides it the best.
2. I wanted to try and distance this movie from WATXM, and Jennifer Hale was actually one of my additional voice ideas, maybe as Dragoness of the MLF. Also, like I mentioned earler, I have a habit (for the most part) of not using actors more than once--I used Yeo as Lady Deathstrike in (fittingly) my Domino film.
3. Wanted to give Jim Kelly something far removed from blaxploitation pics.
4. Lang actually wants to play Cable? When did he confirm that?

Great stuff FLIXMENTALLO@!

PARE has a deep voice so he would be fine!
I like him as an actor, although he's done a lot of B
movies.
But I don't hold them against him! He's done a lot of
nice work!

The rest of the cast is nice!

MINKA KELLY might be too "sweet" to do DOMINO'S voice,
tho'. But she probably could handle it.

So, as I said, GREAT STUFF!

Fantastic!
I really like this cast. Your whole cast is very good. Even Minka! Yes, she may have a "sweet" voice, but she can totally pull off the attitude. Her role in Charlie's Angels showed that!

Great work!
