FANTASTIC FOUR Alum Ioan Gruffudd Wants To Join The Marvel Cinematic Universe As A Villain

Ioan Gruffudd played Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four movies but the actor has taken on a lot of different roles since then and is now hoping he can become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer were both pretty terrible but the cast (mostly) managed to survive the movies, with Chris Evans arguably best off after making the leap to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America. Now, Ioan Gruffudd - who played Mr. Fantastic - has revealed that he would also like to join the MCU, hopefully starring as a villain rather than a hero.

"I would love that... I just don't know, in that universe, the Marvel world, would they let me play something else?... I'm sure for Marvel it was a tough decision to pick Chris to play that part [Captain America] because he'd already played one superhero, but what a brilliant decision it was, because he's wonderful. And Michael B Jordan has played Johnny Storm and he's amazing in Black Panther as well, so there are precedents set. So we'll see. Maybe [I could play] a baddie, this time? Now that I've established myself as somebody who can do that, that would be great."

If you only know the Welsh actor from the Fantastic Four movies, chances are this won't excite you that much but he's starred in a lot of very different projects since then, including ITV's Liar, a series where he was actually pretty terrifying as a serial rapist (so, quite a departure from the leader of the superhero team he played in the mid-2000s). Perhaps he could be the MCU's version of Doctor Doom?

We'll have to wait and see. For now, let us know your thoughts on these remarks in the usual place.

I could see it, not sure off the top of my head who. I like him as an actor, and he wasn't terrible in the F4 films imo. None of the cast really were, but Alba was miscast a bit lol.

@Menks123 - I thought he was awful as Reed. It was probably more the shit script than his acting but that role has made me sour on him. Down for redemption though!

I think Mads Mikkelsen would have been a great Mr. Sinister but his guy could work too.. hell Kevin Bacon wouldn’t have been that bad either..

I can’t wait for Marvel to get the right back for everything Fox holds right now

I liked both his F4 films. They get a lot of flack.

Sadly i don't think he was a particularly good Reed. I wouldn't be excited to see him join the MCU.

@TheManWithoutFear - I liked both pf them, too. At the time, they were groundbreaking for comic book movies. They have not aged well, but I did like them. Had they given Doctor Doom his Latverian accent, I think more fans would have liked these films.

@TheManWithoutFear - George Clooney wasn't a good Batman, but he's accomplished a lot in his career since then. Sometimes the writing and direction is much more at fault than the actor. I haven't seen him in much else, but he could be much more talented than his performance as Reed would have us believe.

@bropous - Not saying you're wrong, but what about them do you consider to be "groundbreaking?"

@BIGBMH - It's probably most the zeitgeist. Superhero movies were few and far between back then. Plus, I have always loved the Fantastic Four, and the Silver Surfer. Galactus was as huge a disappointment as was believable, but no other movie was doing the things with Marvel movies as they did. They probably opened the door to Iron Man.

@bropous -
While superhero movies weren't as common as they are now, I wouldn't say they were few and far between. Most years in that era still had at least 2. 2004, for example, had Spider-man 2,
Hellboy, Catwoman, The Punisher, Blade Trinity, and The Incredibles. If my count is correct, that's only 2 less than we have this year.

I can give Rise of the Silver Surfer a bit more credit than the first film in terms of spectacle and cosmic storytelling. However, if you look at that 5 year period from 2000-2005 leading up to the release of the first film, there was a slew of movies I'd consider hugely impactful for the genre in terms of establishing new standards of storytelling, creating new conventions, and cultivating a taste for these movies in the general audience.

2000: X-men
2002: Spider-man
2003: X2
2004: Spider-man 2
2005: Batman Begins

Compared to those, it's hard for me to call Tim Story's Fantastic Four films "groundbreaking."

I thought 50% of the Four were well cast and he’s not in that 50%. Chiklis and Evans were both good IMHO, even if the script s were not. They had good chemistry together for their teasing of each other, etc. I don’t know if I would say that Gruffudd ‘s acting was bad, necessarily, although I didn’t think he and Alba had chemistry. He looked a bit too young for the part too me. An actor who looked about 5 years older would have made it better for me. Adult superhero’s often are about the same age most of the time unless they are a hero from an earlier generation who started their career when they were that same (like Jay Garrick)standard age, otherwise I might not care as much.

@BlackBeltJones - I like the idea of Kang.

And I think Kang is gonna get his jimmies triggered by use of the Time Stone, so...
