Mark Millar On Josh Trank's FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot

Josh Trank and Mark Millar have been in regular contact about the Fantastic Four reboot. Here's what Millar shared with SciFiNow on the subject.

“From what I’ve seen and from talking to him – he and I have had dinner a couple of times and we talk quite regularly as well – he’s contemporarising it. I think he’s just making it work for the screen – he’s a great storyteller.

Chronicle, if you think about it, was similar to Fantastic Four in that it was a bunch of people who were transformed into something more than human – that turned out almost his calling card to come and do something like Fantastic Four.

What I wasn’t expecting actually was just how funny and likeable he could make this as well as getting the more awesome moments on screen – I use awesome in the traditional British sense and not the California sense awesome, you know? The Ridley Scott moments, and the Fantastic Four really are jaw-dropping in the same way you feel when you saw Alien for the first time. There’s some moments in this – not to be specific – that are actually gonna be phenomenal on screen and stuff you haven’t seen in a superhero movie before.”

I'll admit, there was a time when I was unsure Trank would be directing the film. Following the success of Chronicle, Trank was doing his best Guillermo del Toro impression, signing on to projects at a blistering pace. However, it does indeed appear that things are moving forward for the reboot, which is slated to be released in the crowed film slate of 2015. So according to Millar, we'll have a contemporary, humorous, Ridley Scott Alien-esque, badass Fantastic Four film that will feature stuff never seen before in a comic book movie. Intrigued, yet?

Sigh...well it BETTER be epic! So does this mean that we shouldn't expect Dr.Doom to be the villain in the first one?

Here's hoping it falls apart and the rights revert to Didney.

I think FF is probably the toughest major superhero comic to make work on film. There's such a fine line they have to balance on between epic sci-fi and light family humor.

That said, I don't forgive Tim Story for dropping the ball. He effed up virtually every decision. I know Fox forced Jessica Alba on him, but with everything else the buck stops at the director. Why on Earth they let him do a second I can't imagine. (Or picked him in the first place...)

Is Millar still getting paycheck for doing shit...?

I wonder: origin story with younger actors, or start with the FF as an established, world-famous superfamily? I'd go with the latter if I were making the movie. Imagine George Clooney as Reed Richards! Justin Timberlake as Johnny? No, really. Think about it.

Nope. I still remain skeptical of this 'cause it's Fox and they hadn't much luck with CBMs. I'm still hoping that this film either ends up having too much re-writes and the production starts delaying, or things don't work out with the studio and the rights go straight back to Marvel and THEN we'll have the epic FF than Fox's ones. So again, here's to hoping this all falls apart and it goes straight back to Marvel.

I ain't going to lie, I like some of Mark Miller stuff. I even liked some of his F4 work like: World's Greatest, Ultimate F4: Crossover, UF4: Frightful. That being said, I wasn't to fond of Ultimates. Plus the fact that FOX wanted him as a creative consultant for their Marvel movies, did very little to get me excited.

Also that article awhile back about his favorite movies in 2012 showed that he was doing some ass kissing and being a little stupid.

Also praying it falls apart...and hoping Fox is reading these bigger webpage comments. YOU WILL NEVER SEE A NICKLE OF MY MONEY EVER AGAIN....

@LEVIT - Like I told peeps in the chat, it's all talk with Fox and Reynolds, but no walk--no action being taken. They keep saying of how close they'll keep it to the material, the "R-rating" it'll have 'cause of the action, blood, gore, etc., and whatnot. But I think it's because Fox is too d@mn busy with the X-Men and Wolverine films, that they'll keep Deadpool off to the side and keeping saying excuses and sh!t to make it look like they're doing something of the film. :/

@gambgel Surprised by FC? Like the totally convoluted timeline, the destruction of character cannon that made them work for decades, or the horrible forethought on how it fits into the series? Yep....was surprised that Fox could reach new lows...but they did. It was better then Wolverine Origins though, then again so are most fan films on YouTube.

If there is some way for Fox to screw this up, the WILL find it. That's what they do.

@monkeyballs3 - Marie Claude . . . I do hope she gets more revealing.

@batz11 - Is that photoshopped? Not complaining.

As far as article goes . . . "Ridley Scott moments"; this movie will suck! That's like GL press junkets saying "Green Lantern the new Star Wars"

@godzillafart
EXACTLY what I was going to say. To me, Ridley Scott moment doesnt mean the same thing it did before Prometheus

I hope they put the Fantastic Four in the 60s, make the entire Fox Marvel Cinematic Universe (Im calling it FMCU for short) exist in the silver era of the comics.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe can exist in the 21st century grounded world with grounded characters (well as grounded as you can get with Hulk and aliens running around), the FMCU in the 20th century and the potential DCCU in a grounded world with larger than life god-like superheroes with relatable civilian alter egos

Oh and NO CROSSOVERS WITH THE MCU, its obvious in the MCU, that superpowered people have only started appearing in the 21st century, judging by Nick Fury's comments. In the X-Men universe, people are starting to find out about them in the 60s. Plus I dont want Fox tainting the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its poor continuity. MCU has perfect continuity (apart from where the hell was Iron Man during the Incredible Hulk, but thats the only continuity problem I have)

@LEVITIKUZ because deadpool is connected to x-men, and because he was in a movie with the word x-men in it the rights to him are part of the x-men rights. So fox only have to produce an x-men movie every 6 years to keep the rights.

I'm only asking for an at least proper Dr. Doom. He's my favorite comic book villain - along with the Four being my favorite comic book team, actually - but there's no CBM character butchery as big as the Dr. Doom we saw before. OK, maybe George Clooney's Batman, Schawrzenegger's Mr. Freeze, but...ah, you get my point.

"oblivious to shitty writing"
@Godzilla, wasn't Lindelof and another dude who wrote Prometheus? Scott haven't nothing to do with the writing of film. You should lower the hatred on Prometheus, so much hate causes cancer! LOL

Did he just compare fantastic for to Alien?!?! Come on , gimme a break , fantastic four isn't worthy to be spoken in the same sentence as Ridley Scott's Alien.

The way he is comparing it to Alien make sme think we are going to see Mole man and all his monsters.

I though Chronicle sucked - sorry. If this make this more of a Alines space / extradimensional epic I think it would be cool. Rush the origin - we all know it - and get to something cool.
comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 1/9/2013, 10:16 AM
I just hope they do the team right this time. They were not 'relucatant heroes', a hackneyed story type for CBM's that I am really sick and tired of seeing. They embraced their newfound powers and decided to use them for the good of mankind. Classic heroes. And Doom wasn't on the rocket with them. Doom's basic background can be explained in thirty seconds of backstory. How freaking hard is that to do correctly? The FF aren't that hard to do. Just pull out the Lee/Kirby classics and film some of that. Capture the essence of what makes these characters great and enduring.

@Bojac You sure you want that? If this movie flops and the rights go back to Disney they will do [frick]-all with them as why would they invest time and money in a film franchise they don't see as profitable?

For God's sake, Fox. Just give the rights back to Marvel/Disney already.

why cant we just let this movie die! let the rights revert back to MARVEL so we can get a good version of the Fantastic 4! one that as the opportunity to join The Avengers

RamonSuarez - 1/9/2013, 10:31 AM
I am curious as to what makes people think Trank can write and direct a traditional feature film project. Chronicle was a shaky hand held camera job with a derivative plot. Are the people who directed Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity lighting Hollywood on fire?
RexDartEskimoSpy
RexDartEskimoSpy - 1/9/2013, 10:35 AM
@batz11: Yeah, it's Pam Anderson's body, but those really are Jessica Alba's ridiculously fake eyes from Rise Of The Silver Surfer. (There's that "rise" title again...) Unbelievable that Fox thought those contacts looked acceptable - indicative of how completely clueless the producers were.

I'm really hoping this turns out well. Yeah, a flop might lead to the rights getting back to Marvel, but it could also dirty the franchise so irreparably in the minds of moviegoers that Marvel wouldn't dare make an FF film of their own. The best case scenario would be for Fox to make a good Fantastic Four movie that can be folded into the MCU. (Same with Spider-Man.)
