Ratner to Rape Conan Movie

According to the Hollywood Reporter, X-Men franchise killer Brett Ratner is in final negotiations for the Conan movie. Literature's most famous barbarian is about to bend over...

Over the past few weeks, Ratner has been considering signing on to direct a 21st century update of "Conan," co-produced by Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate Films, even as he pushes another high-profile project -- a fourth installment of the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise -- toward a greenlight at Paramount, where he recently set up shop.

...Ratner jibed to the "Conan" script by Gersh-repped Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, who looked to Robert E. Howard's original pulp stories of the 1930s to create their take on the character. The writers are doing a quick polish to incorporate some of Ratner's ideas, with an eye toward releasing the film in 2010.

Millennium and Lionsgate are eyeing a potential franchise and envision a very R-rated approach in the $85 million budget range.

"The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films," Lerner said. "This is a coup for Millennium Films and proves that our choice of projects and material is attracting much higher-profile directors and actors."

Oliver Stone and John Milius wrote the surly fictional thief's first screen incarnation, "Conan the Barbarian," which Milius also directed in 1982. A jokier, less blood-and-boob-heavy sequel, "Conan the Destroyer," destroyed the character's franchise chances in 1984 by aiming for a PG-13 rating.

Having been a REH reader for years, I have to say that both the original Conan films were horrible. At least these guys have taken the first step in the right direction. There is nowhere else to go for the source materials other than REH's original stories. Those were the stories that made Conan a time tested character.

All this crap about rated R or PG-13 is nonsense really. Movie makers need to quite worrying about the boobs and the blood and concern yourself with an outstanding story, with a director who loves and understands the character, along with a good setting (costumes and locations), coupled with the right photography and above all of this PEOPLE WHO CAN ACT, not just the main characters, but the supporting staff too.

It has been proven big time with the Lord of the Rings and Nolan's Batman. Treat the characters with respect, stick to the stories that made them great and give us (the fans) a quality product, not b-grade crap. And guess what guys? Neither one of those movies had boobs or blood.

What would happen if you took all the night & shadow away from Batman's concept? You wouldn't even have Batman begins or the dark knight. He lurks, he uses the element of fear and surprise, he needs the shade.

Now what would happen if you took all the boobs and blood away from Conan the freakin barbarian? He's a barbarian!!! The era is filled with boobs, blood, steel and testosterone!!! Be true not only to the character but also to the historical facts of that specific era. There needs to be a logic behind it. Not only is Conan a barbarian but his dad would have had to be even more barbaric then him! And look at what was done with Kull the conqueror!!! Blasphemy!

I loved X-Men 3... was it as good as the other two? Of course not but it doesn't make it bad. People's expectations were probably too high. The reverse effect can of course be examined with Ironman.

First and foremost, you need to go to movies with something in mind of whats going to take place... When you go to see a movie called Conan The Barbarian, or Conan The Destroyer, you have to be thinking "BARBARIAN"... and "DESTROYER" and as long as those two things are in the movie then its going to be good enough for me... and as far as an Arnold cameo... it would be kinda cool... but nothing like being his father or what ever (although that would be really cool also... lol) and just read the dang comic books and do what they do!!!

Good god don't ruin this one. I can't quite imagine it without Arnold though. I can't think of anyone barbaric enough. Might have to use an "unknown" for sure. It should have a massive R rating. Blood, swords and nudity... 'nough said...

I'm bored and just looking at old topics...

Blood and boobs are very important to the Conan mythos, not because it is blood and boobs, but because it sets a tone about the world and Conan. He is such a primal character, that is actually very deep psychologically and emotionally. Yet he's never afraid to bust a skull or woo a harlot.

The fact that he is a "barbarian" often proved to be what made him more "civilized."

ie "Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing."

I'm not saying you can't have boobs and shouldn't have blood. What I'm saying is that there is so much more to the Conan mythos than that. The stories that REH wrote were about self made men, not only rough and sometimes brutal but smart as well. All of Howard's characters were like that, but Conan was the most captivating. High adventure is what REH's stories were about, not lumbering oafs stumbling through their misbegotten lives. There is no reason that a Conan film shouldn't be as great as the Lord of the Rings. Look at Soloman Kane. That was a good effort and 100 times better than the drivel that Arnold was part of.
