Ian McKellen Brings Us Up To Date On The Hobbit

At a LOTR screening in London, McKellen told the folks present that he will be officially reprising his role as Gandalf, and that Bilbo has been cast!

Last night saw a special marathon screening of the extended editions of all three Lord of the Rings films at London’s BFI IMAX cinema. Ian McKellen was present and spoke for a short time about "The Hobbit"

This from Slashfilm...

"(McKellen)confirmed that he’ll be coming back as Gandalf, and is expecting to start work on set in March of next year, he also dropped a bit of a casting bombshell. According to McKellen, the starring role of Bilbo Baggins has been successfully cast already. Not only that, but he knows who has the role and he’s sure that the fans will be very, very pleased."

Apparently this got the crowd into a very James McCavoy frame of mind! But Slashfilm are also reporting that the "Wanted" actor has signed on for "I’m With Cancer" and is negotiating for a role in Robert Redford’s Lincoln drama "The Conspirator", so it wouldn't seem likely that the little fella would have the time to get into the furry slippers!

It shouldn't be long before we hear who the actor is now anyway so watch this space!

Mmmm, yeah i dunno Ozy, might seem a bit wacky to cast a dude in his 70s in the role of a character thats supposed to look about 25..But thats just me!

I'm pretty sure that Bilbo is going to be played by Sharlto Copley, Wikus from District 9. I have a pretty good feeling about that. Why? They need someone who could act realistic in situations that Bilbo goes through. Sharlto proved how realistically he would act in the situations that occurred in District 9, so it has to be him.

Yeah, with that reasoning, has to be him alright!;)

and this is COMIC BOOK movie news because ...? hey don't get me wrong, I like LOTR (although I think the only Return in a trilogy is of the Jedi and not the King), but it is not COMIC BOOK movie news../

Yeah the mother ship was the thing that bugged me a bit too! I think they needed that power cell for something other than fueling the drop ship though...

Baby Prawn was cool, i was hoping SPOILERRRRRRRRSSSSSS....that he wouldn't be killed..but then thought he was gonna be and Chris would lose it and kill all the humans.

Bilbo in The Hobbit is preserved in age until LOTR, so he technically looked too old in the trilogy. He was supposed to look like 52... I get what they are trying to do, but now that line "You haven't aged a day" from Gandalf won't make much sense.

I'm still excited. I have been waiting for a casting announcement since they said they would say who they had in mind on Christmas of '07, they are long overdue.

sirprize/rorschach:

the way i took it was that the little command shuttle needed the fuel cell to work, and then once it was on, it was able to activate the mothership by like remote control or something. but it couldnt do that without the fuel cell to give it power...?

anyway, i thought the movie was tremendous. saw it the other day. cgi was so good that the aliens looked real alongside the human actors. i loved the dusty slum setting of it in s. africa. guy who played wikus was brilliant. i was so caught up in everything that happened in this movie. its so much more than a movie about aliens...

i would love to see a sequel, but i almost felt that this was a kind of movie that wasnt supposed to have a follow up. i got a strange sense of closure at the end of the movie, as much closure as there could be. besides what will happen if chris and that kid prawn come back, will there be war??
