Green Lantern Screenwriter Says Script is Not 'Comedic or Silly'

The LA Times recently caught up with comic author and screenwriter Marc Guggenheim. Marc has had several successful comic book runs including a Blade story arc, the death of the fourth Flash (Bart Allen) and The Amazing Spider-Man. He also wrote the script for the 2009 video game X-Men Origins: Wolverine; which many fans felt was better executed that the film it was based off of.

Along with Greg Berlanti and Michael Green, Guggenheim put into effect the script that is now being used for Martin Campbell's Green Lantern live action film. When asked how he feels the tone of the film will come across on screen, he said,

"Honestly, I can only speak for the tone of the script because the tone of the film is really the province of the director and they've only just started production. However, our goal from the outset was to write a movie that was extremely faithful to the comic book and that includes the tone. In other words, it's not broadly comedic or silly. Nor is it overly dark. It's very much in keeping with the spirit of the character."

Green Lantern will be filming in New Orleans, LA, through August 2010. The film is scheduled for theatrical release June 17th, 2011.

I've actually read an early version of the script and it is not hokey at all. There are a few Arnoldian-like one liners though. "I'm green with envy." "Polish my lantern." Stuff like that.

@Betty: I can actually imagine Reynolds doing does one liners, especially the latter.

Though if they survived for the new script, I think Martin Campbell is gonna cut them out. Marc makes it clear that how the director bends the script is important for how we as viewers experience the finale product. And he is right about that. I don't think Campbell will go the comedic road. I think we can count on him bringing the Green Lantern that we love...

Can't wait to see some pics of Ryan Reynolds in the GL suit!!!

CDB Betty Lucky@ it's all about the context (which betty could probably enlighten us on) say some lanterns were sparing and one loses and the victor says ok now polish my lantern and throws him his battery to literally be polished because he lost. the "im green.." line is a little less ambiguous. it's definitely tongue-in-cheek. but Reynolds could pull it off if he was mocking something Sinestro said or something i dunno! im just offering up some opinions.

nothing will ever be on par with Ahnolds portrayal of Freeze in "the movie which shall not be mentioned" - lol im not worried about a few comedic lines

Multi@ lol you sure do

Everyone who claims that Hal is a very serious guy doesn't read the comics at all. Hal Jordan breaks out more one-liners than any other hero in DC Universe, which makes Ryan Reynolds PERFECT for the role (other than the fact that he is PERFECT for the role lol). Can't wait to see this film!

Marc has had several successful comic book runs including ...the death of Barry Allen

That should read the death of BART Allen, not Barry. Nice find though!

Good. Hal does crack a few jokes, but he is not a comedic character.

@InterestingJohn

Lol I remember that, Hal has a pretty smart comedic mouth. Ryan is pretty much the master of one liners and I have faith he will be worthy of dawning the Green Lantern ring.

The one liners should be used sparingly and wisely. At the right time basically cus Hal is generally a serious heroic figure.

The only DC character I recall that ever made jokes and remarks from time to time was the Flash.
