HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Movie Taps IRON MAN Scribes For Script Rewrite

Sony is moving forward with a big-screen take on classic animated series He-Man and the Master of the Universe, and the studio has now hired
Iron Man scribes Art Marcum & Matt Holloway to pen the script.

We recently found out that David S. Goyer had stepped down as director on Sony Pictures and Mattel's planned Masters of the Universe reboot (though he'll remain on as exec producer and screenwriter), but it was then announced that the project has found a pair of replacements in the Nee brothers, Aaron and Adam, who will get to work on the sci-fi/fantasy adventure soon to ensure it meets its Dec. 18, 2019 release date.

Now, Collider reports that the writers of the first Iron Man movie, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, have also come aboard to pen a new draft of the script. The duo's other credits include Transformers: The Last Knight and Punisher: War Zone, so He-Man is in good hands!

We're still not sure what to expect from this take on the classic animated series, but there's a good chance it'll be a fairly light-hearted affair - especially given the recent success of Warner Bros. and James Wan's campy Aquaman movie.

We recently reported on some character descriptions via That Hashtag Show which you can see below, but keep in mind that a new script may mean that all of these details are subject to change.

Duncan/Man-at-Arms

The King's right-hand man and weaponeer becomes one of He-Man's most loyal allies in the animated series, and it looks like the upcoming reboot will follow-suit.

Duncan is also expected to "serve as a main source of exposition due to his knowledge of Eternia's history."

Zodak

One of the franchise's most intriguing and popular antiheroes, Zodak was originally envisioned as a powerful immortal warrior, but it sounds like the movie plans to strip away some of the more fantastical elements associated with the character.

Here, Zodak will be the King's Minister of Technology, as is expected to take on a mentor role to Adam.

Teela

Daughter of Duncan, Captain of the Royal Guard, and Adam/He-Man's love interest; Teela is an integral part of pretty much all incarnations of Master of the Universe.

We don't know a whole lot about the movie version of the character, but she will serve in Eternia's military, anyway.

Orko

Orko fans should prepare to be disappointed, because it sounds like the reboot will take some major liberties with this little fella.

In the cartoon Orko was a floating alien magician, and served as comic relief. However, the live-action version of the character will be depicted as "a small man whose self-doubt holds him back from being a reasonably mediocre wizard."

Stratos

Stratos is generally depicted as the leader of a race of Bird People known as the Avion, and an ally of He-Man. However, it sounds like the movie will be giving the character a bit more of an edge.

For one, he'll be nicknamed the "Angel of Death," and will rule over the Sky Guards of the Iron Gate Prison "where Skeletor and his crew are imprisoned at one point."

Beast Man

Another classic character that'll be getting quite an extensive makeover for the movie is Skeletor's muscle, Beast Man.

It seems this ferocious villain will now be a shape-shifter with the ability to change into any animal that takes his fancy, "making him a useful spy for Skeletor as well as a formidable fighter."

Evil Lyn

Thankfully, it doesn't sound like they'll be taking too many liberties with Skeletor's wicked sorceress.

Just like in the cartoon/comics, Evil-Lyn will be "a powerful and intelligent witch who uses her power to help Skeletor reconstruct the Havok Staff." She's also described as the "femme-fatale" of the film.

Trap Jaw

Originally introduced as a mass-murdering psycho from another dimension, Trap Jaw was toned down considerably for the animated series and basically became the bad guys' bumbling comic relief.

Details on his upcoming big-screen appearance are sparse, but we do know that he'll still be a cyborg of some description.

Didn't Iron Man famously not have a script, like most of it was all improvisation? And those other examples aren't promising..

“The duo's other credits include Transformers: The Last Knight and Punisher: War Zone, so He-Man is in good hands!”

The Last Knight and in good hands in the same sentence? You must be sarcastic, because The Last Knight might be the dumbest movie I”ve seen in a long time

Also slightly off-topic: I saw Iron Man 3 again I gotta say I really like it. Especially the twist, because when reading about what the Drew Pearce, Shane Black and Kevin Feige have to say about it, I think it is pretty genius

What'd you read?
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/12/2019, 8:59 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Although they thought it was a big risk that could go wrong, they still decided to go with it. Black didn't even want to do the mandarin at all, he took it like a shot after Pearce came up with the idea with the Mandarin being a false face. Black described that as being somewhat mythical, like can a guy like this exist or is he really just something made up? Feige thought it was risky, but decided in favor of it because , even if it means deviating from the source material, it is an interesting story choice. I actually liked the twist, and it's fun to know that they did it on purpose, even if they knew it could be controversial

MyCoolYoung - 1/12/2019, 11:18 AM
@MalseMarcel - is it on the blu-ray?

Only thing I was mad at regarding the twist was that Ben Kingsley was so terrifying as the mandarin but other than that it was fine.

Iron man 3 is still one of the better mcu films to me
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/12/2019, 11:59 AM
@MyCoolYoung - It's all from seperate sources, but I pieced it together for a coherent story. I think Ben Kingsley being terrifying as the Mandarin is exactly what they aimed for, make him so scary that you would allmost think he cannot be real (which he eventually was). Also, I think it factored pretty good into the story of Killian and AIM using him as cover-up for their accidents

@MalseMarcel - I agree. I loved that he was made to represent international terrorism but really it was domestic terrorism and hate mongering
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 1/11/2019, 4:21 PM
Now that I’ve gotten a Thor trilogy (that I love) and a series of great Avengers that there is essientially no movie I would love to see more than a great Masters of the Universe movie. Only things in that ballpark are a great Hal Jordan Green Lantern movie and great Justice League movie (with Hal Jordan).
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 1/12/2019, 7:19 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - as a Thor fan, how do you love that trilogy? I get that you are happy they made one but they barely scratched the surface of the Norse mythology behind it. I loved Thor 3 but even that spent most of it's time dealing with a space gladiator tournament.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 1/12/2019, 10:13 AM
@Ryguy88 - Oh I’m fine with that. Most Thor stories over the years haven’t been very steeped in the mythological aspects and those that do are always through a Marvel lens anyway. My favorite Thor stories have always been when he stumbles upon some big event happening, rushes in without thinking, planning or even knowing anything about what is going on, everyone is like who the heck is this weird talking guy with a hammer, Thor saves the day. The fact that in all three films Thor faced a foe from one of the Nine Realms other than Midgard to me makes it feel like more connected to Asgard and mythology than even the comics always are.
