Directed by Scream's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Abigail revolves around a group of would-be-criminals who kidnap a 12-year-old ballerina in the hope of collecting a $50 million ransom from her underworld father.

However, they soon realise that she's no normal child and is, in fact, a bloodthirsty vampire. What follows is a darkly funny, blood-soaked tale which sees Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, and Dan Stevens all deliver scene-stealing performances.

In the closing moments of Abigail, Barrera's character, Joey, escapes near-certain death after the title vampire's father (played by Watchmen star Matthew Goode) allows her to go free. She then receives a voicemail from her estranged son after reaching out to him earlier in the movie, suggesting Joey will ultimately repair their relationship upon finding a new lease on life.

Now, Barrera has revealed a slightly different ending for the movie, explaining why it was left on the cutting room floor.

"We did record a call with my son in the van, so there was that option of him actually answering and Joey saying, 'I'm coming home.' But I think the guys decided that we didn't need it, because we had that big emotional call before, and because of the nature of the ending with Abigail and her dad coming in, it would have felt like a double beat," the actress tells Screen Rant (via FearHQ.com).

"I think we didn't need it, and it's just a badass [fight] then leave like that. Just be like, 'We don't know what's gonna happen. Is she gonna go home? Did Abigail tell the truth that she's going to turn into a vampire?' Who knows?"

Unfortunately, despite receiving positive reviews from fans and critics alike, Abigail has earned only $37.5 million on a $28 million budget. That puts it into "flop" territory, making a sequel unlikely.

Asked about a possible follow-up, Barrera said, "The idea of a sequel for me was always exciting, because I want to be a vampire. [Laughs] That's all I want in life, that's all I want. So that was, for me, it was the thing, but I don't know that we need one. And it will be actually really hard to do with Alisha, because technically, she can't get any older, and she's at that age where she is getting older."

"Not that you can't do it with deaging and CGI and all that stuff, but who knows? I'd definitely be open to coming back. I will work with Matt and Tyler whenever, wherever, for whatever project. So, if they were like, 'Let's make another,' I'd be like, 'Yeah, when? Let's go back to Ireland.'"

Abigail is still playing in theaters and is now available to purchase digitally as well. You can watch a trailer below.
