Given the divisive reception to Paul Feig's 2016 Ghostbusters movie, there's a lot of anxiousness (as well as excitement) surrounding Jason Reitman's upcoming attempt, which will be a sequel to the original 1980's films. Not much is known publicly about the Reitman's movie, but original Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd has apparently seen the script and he had nothing but praise for it.

In a recent interview with 660 City News, Aykroyd — who co-wrote and starred in the original Ghostbusters — offered some top-level details regarding Reitman's upcoming movie and the future of the franchise.

"Ivan Reitman’s son Jason has written a beautiful script, I can’t say too much about it but it’s going to get made and hopefully there’ll be some familiar faces." Aykroyd teased.

"It’s so different from even the first and second (film)," he continued. "This just takes it to a new generation and a new direction that is so warm, heartfelt and indeed, quite scary when you confront some of the issues that are being discussed."

Beyond Reitman's upcoming movie, Aykroyd revealed that he has already explored a potential prequel to the Ghostbusters, which would take fans to the 1960s and explore the teenage years of parapsychologists Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler and Ray Stantz.

"Although I’ve written “Ghostbusters High,” where they meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we’re looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years. And it would lead to a television project and I thought of [Reitman] immediately for that," Aykroyd revealed. "It’s on his desk but that’s years away from the current project. But it’s a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers!"

Aykroyd added that the prequel idea is "way, way down" the line, and that he has "other stuff" planned for after the Reitman-helmed Ghostbusters movie.

Ghostbusters is slated to hit theaters on July 10, 2020. Casting is underway with Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), and Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel) already on board.
