The crazies is the latest horror movie featuring a small group of survivors in a town trying to escape from monstrous bad guys. Its actually a remake of a 1973 film of the same name by horror master George A. Romero, who also serves as executive producer on this one. Its basically a theme we've seen millions of times from 30 Days of Night, to Children of The Corn, to almost any zombie movie ever made.(hence the Romero connection) The only twist is that these are not monsters but the normally boring town folk being turned into homicidal maniacs. This comes MINOR SPOILER........courtesy of the U.S. government and some virus they created. A plane transporting the virus to a military incinerator crashes into the local lake. The same lake that happens to provide the water for the town. You can figure out the rest from there.

The hero of this story is the town Sheriff played by Timothy Olyphant (Hitman, Live Free or Die Hard, and my personal favorite The Girl Next Door). He turns in a typical performance of a small town sheriff trying to figure out whats going on and save the town, specifically his pregnant wife. They pick up a few other towns people along the way in an attempt to escape the crazies and the military who, surprise surprise, want to kill everyone in the town to contain the outbreak. The performances are what you would expect in this type of movie. The one to watch for is Joe Anderson who plays Deputy Russell. He turns in an actually really good performance in a supporting role. The plot is generally predictable as are the scares and the gore. But nothing to really write home about, or disparage either. It was a typical hour and half horror flick with all the typical expectations. On a rainy or snowy day it's a decent way to burn a few hours at the theatre. You could do much worse these days.

Overall 3 out of 5 stars. Great horror escapism.

i usually dispise the concept of no thought required. but it kind of worked for this movie. it had some thought to it, and was surprisingly well put together. i would recomend it.

Remakes were brought up iwith the Jaws thread. This is the type of film I don't mind being remade. Some remakes like this have turned out better then the original. Like Dawn of the the Dead or The Hills Have Eyes 1&2. I actually am looking forward to this remake as I am a big fan of the original. Can't help it, I a huge fan of bad horror. From Beyond is playing in the back ground as I write this. anyways I am glad to hear this is getting good reviews. I really didn't see this turning out to be a bad film.

dellamorte1872. No need to be rude. I did not "talk shit" about the Original Dawn of the Dead. I just said I thought the remake was better. It's just my opinion. Just because Romero has something to do with a movie does not make it gold. Quit the mindless idolatry. Shall I make a list of the offal he was involved with. There maybe more but these are the ones off the top of my head.

Ok here I go:
1. Bruiser
2. Day of the Dead (2008)
3. Deadtime Stories
4. Diary of the Dead
5. Hungry Wives
6. Knightriders
7. There's Always Vanilla

I honestly did not realize Zack Snyder directed this movie. Not until you brought it up, like it was some kind of insult. The characters were a little bit more believable. The action was a bit more intense. The Zombie baby was creepy! I will not debate you on this next point, the fast moving zombies were cool. So other then "Romero did it" can you give me one reason why the original was better. With out incorrect grammar, Caps Locks or rude remarks.

Cook- Della's quite a passionate one. I find his comment funny because he thinks of you as a Snyder sheep but what he's really doing is projecting the fact that he's a Romero sheep! LMFAO :P

God- AWESOME review ;))

Nice review Superdog, I was curious about how well this movie did, still doesn't really grab me. I'll wait for the rental.

Cook I have to agree with you, just because Romero worked on a movie does not make it perfect, case and point Land of the Dead. That movie sucked, really really bad.

I love zombie movies, I loved the original Dawn of the Dead and Snyder's remake which I thought was an equally amazing film. Diary of the Dead was surprisingly good, I thought it was going to bomb but actually delivered a compelling zombie film, granted not very original thought with the whole mockumentary but it fit nicely.

Stumblin- See I would have to disagree with you. But look, we can be civil about it. I really liked Land of the Dead. I like the post-apocalyptic feel to the film and that the Dead could evolve as well. Diary of the Dead I disliked just for the mockumentary aspect of the film. I think this works with some films like REC. and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. But ultimately it failed for me in this film.

I'm not splitting hairs Cook, no worries about me taking any of this personal it is all opinions after all. Yeah, Diary of the Dead was meh, but still enjoyed it. The Land of the Dead just missed it for me, I hated the head zombie who really looked like a guy with makeup on instead of a decomposing walking corpse. And the end when the guy had a chance to blow him and his zombie posse away and was like, no they're people too b.s. and drove away. Sorry if you're going to eat my brains I will kill you, and if you can start being able to plan out attacks to eat my brains, even more reason to blow you away.

OK I see your point the ending was kinda cheezy.

yeah, and there were still regular people alive and running from that zombie and his friends and they just left him alive to kill the remaining people? it was a horrible ending. the rest of the movie was ok.

Dog, great review and I agree. I liked it fine but predictable and..well, nothing really happens! But the acting was great and I actually gave a shit about the characters which counts for a lot. Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead is still the best of these new age survival/horror films though.

I have not seen the Crazies but it looks pretty good I like zombie movies or anything that is like a zombie movie my favorites are Snyder's Dawn of the Dead and the 28 Days Later series those are good movies.

Keven, I'm more than familiar with Romero's style of film. And I'll reiterate, just because Romero did it, doesn't make it gold. It was ok, but hardly fantastic, Night of the Living Dead was fantastic, Dawn of the Dead was fantastic, Land of the Dead was a miss, entertaining? Sure, good? Not so much. I liked the concept but it didn't hit the mark for me and felt Romero could have done much better.

I haven't heard about Survival of the Dead, I'll be looking forward to it.
