WEREWOLF BY NIGHT Director Michael Giacchino To Helm Remake Of '50s Giant Monster Movie THEM!

After helming Marvel Studios' Special Presentation Werewolf by Night, Michael Giacchino will make his feature directorial debut with a remake of classic 1954 giant ant movie, Them!...

If you're an old-school monster movie fan, there's a good chance you'll be familiar with 1954's sci-fi/horror classic, Them!, which was among the first nuclear "big bug" features of the period.

Directed by Gordon Douglas, the movie kicks-off when a nest of gigantic irradiated ants is discovered in the New Mexico desert; they quickly become a national threat when two young queen ants and their consorts escape to establish new nests.

Deadline (via FearHQ.com) is reporting that a remake is in the works from composer-turned-filmmaker Michael Giacchino.

“There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head,” said the Werewolf by Night director. “For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age. What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie,”

“Michael Giacchino is a unique talent. We’re excited to be working with him and have him at the studio,” said Warner Bros Pictures President of Production and Development Jesse Ehrman who is overseeing the project on the Burbank, CA lot.

As he did with Werewolf by Night, Giacchino plans to compose the score for the movie, which will mark his feature directorial debut. He also intends to get his filmmaker brother, Anthony Giacchino, involved in the production in some capacity.

What do you guys make of this news? Have you seen the original? If not, it's probably not as campy/silly as you'd expect, and is well worth checking out.

Unlike as a composer (he's so-so imho) reckon he's finally found his own unique voice in the genre.

@Doomsday8888 - That's a fairly bold statement. What specifically do you not like? Personally, I love his "less is more" approach to scoring films. I'm bored with every action movie score sounding like The Dark Knight (awesome score..but definitely copied).

@satanicbatman
He's generic af imho, it'd be far easier for me to tell you what i DO like outta his work, lel.

And even then, it's mostly a matter of some tracks here and there, i don't think i fully enjoy 1 single album from Giacchino unlike, since you mentioned him, Zimmer.

@Origame - Someone around here had the idea a while back of calling the MCU version of the X-Men... The X-THEM and I thought it was kind of genius.

"The current version of Them! is about immigration"

I think the preferred current version of 'Them!' is the non-binary pronouns. Should just call it 'They/Them!' and lean into it.

@ObserverIO - Good Lord! choke, queen ants, workers and soldiers don't know their proper place any more... the soldiers want to lay eggs, the queen wants to be called a king, the flying ones want their wings chopped off and they ALL want to be represented in a new film.
Original is great, why do you need to remake it?

He hasn't had a good score since Coco/ the Incredibles 2, having said that, I really liked Werewolf by Night

The original "Them" is one of my favorite 50's sci-fi movies. If his remake comes to pass, I just hope he doesn't mess it up.

I kinda want them to give him Star Wars. Just a Star Wars something, not necessarily a film, maybe just an episode of one of the shows. But after seeing Director By Night... man they gotta give him something something Star Wars something.

What do I make of this ODD news?

Idk, not everyday you hear a musical composer who scores for film getting big film directing jobs. I thought Werewolf by Night was good though so lets see.

Hopefully Danny Elfman gets to direct A Nightmare Before Easter next, or possibly John Williams directing Indiana Jones and The Wonderous Baton.

I MEAN COME ON HOLLYWOOD! Lets get it poppin!

leave it to some woke idiots to try and turn this great cheesy Sci-Fi classic into something that has some ridiculous unintended meaning because of its title.

Watching the movie "Them" will make your life better by the same degree as receiving a gift of 14 cases of tequila & a truckload of peanutbutter cookies.

Glad to see him getting rewarded for his work. I hope they try to keep the FX as practical possible. Giacchino seems like he'd respect the classics.

Made me think of how they snuck these classic creature movie frames into Cloverfield, and Giacchino's awesome old-fashioned monster score.
