If you're an old-school monster movie fan, there's a good chance you'll be familiar with 1954's sci-fi/horror classic, Them!, which was among the first nuclear "big bug" features of the period.
Directed by Gordon Douglas, the movie kicks-off when a nest of gigantic irradiated ants is discovered in the New Mexico desert; they quickly become a national threat when two young queen ants and their consorts escape to establish new nests.
Deadline (via FearHQ.com) is reporting that a remake is in the works from composer-turned-filmmaker Michael Giacchino.
“There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head,” said the Werewolf by Night director. “For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age. What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie,”
“Michael Giacchino is a unique talent. We’re excited to be working with him and have him at the studio,” said Warner Bros Pictures President of Production and Development Jesse Ehrman who is overseeing the project on the Burbank, CA lot.
As he did with Werewolf by Night, Giacchino plans to compose the score for the movie, which will mark his feature directorial debut. He also intends to get his filmmaker brother, Anthony Giacchino, involved in the production in some capacity.
What do you guys make of this news? Have you seen the original? If not, it's probably not as campy/silly as you'd expect, and is well worth checking out.
