Iron Man 2 Junket: Sam Rockwell

CBM's own Brent Sprecher gets to the bottom of why Sam Rockwell was not at the junket...and ticks off Robert Downey, Jr. in the process!

There have been more than a dozen different posters and over a hundred still images released for Iron Man 2, yet actor Sam Rockwell, who plays Tony Stark's nemesis, Justin Hammer, appears in almost none of it and he was the only main actor who didn't appear at the press junket. So, when I had my turn at the microphone, I asked director Jon Favreau about his absence and if there had been some sort of falling out with Rockwell.

In response to my question, Favreau said:

"Yes. You hit the mother lode."

Actor Robert Downey, Jr. interjected:

"I was wondering the same question.

However, according to Favreau, Rockwell's absence was only a matter of logistics and not because of any "beef" between Rockwell and the rest of the cast.

"Sam's in a play. He's on Broadway doing a play right now. He's also going to be at the premiere so you can ask him then. Ever since our first collaboration when he was the gender-unspecific concierge in Made, I knew that he was an inspiring, inspiring dude. I wish he could be here, selfishly, 'cause he's a fun, funny guy. And, he was always a fountainhead of ideas and great stuff and I wish he could have been here. And, so, unfortunately, there's no fire where that smoke is."

Before they could yank the microphone away from me, I asked a follow-up question about Rockwell being considered for the part of Tony Stark, which did not sit well with Downey, Jr., who interjected:

"That's enough, this is embarrassing. You're embarrassing yourself."

Fortunately, Favreau was much more gracious and did answer my question:

"Well, we were putting a list together long before I even met with Robert. And, I thought of him as sort of an untraditional, interesting, other way to go as we were listing a lot of younger actors that didn't have a lot of experience, that were a little more traditionally, uh, what you would think for a superhero role. Then, when I met Robert, pretty much we clicked, and I knew that that was the guy. But, as Justin Hammer, I think you see a cool, goofy image of—Justin Hammer wishes he was Tony Stark and he really embraced that aspect of the character and I think it's fun for that way. He has a ball with it."

Getting cursed at by RDJ.

Check that off your things to do list.

Great job embarrassing yourself Brent! j/k I thought it was a great move landing Rockwell for the role of Hammer-he does some amazing work.

Sam Rockwell is a fantastic actor, and he really was a perfect choice for the role of Justin Hammer. I really wish I would have been there to see the look on your face when RDJ interjected upon your question of Rockwell being in contention for the role of Stark. That's just priceless.

@Brent LMAO! Dude be honest, how scared did you get when you pissed off RDJ?!
bsprecher
bsprecher - 4/23/2010, 10:17 PM
@DasBoot: No, not scared. In fact, it made me realize that even a mega-star like RDJ can feel insecure when he's not getting enough attention.

@Multi: I totally did not expect that reaction from him. He looked pissed off, dude!

When I played the tape for my girl she was like, "What did you expect, you were asking about another actor playing his role right in front of him?" Women...more in tune with feelings and such. I just wanted to know where he was because Rockwell OWNS every scene he is in, even the scenes with Rourke.

Wow Brent. LMAO. I think you topped Poni and Campbell's dislike of him. I would've made it worst because I would've been laughing at him. LMAO. Thats what I do when I get caught off guard. lol.

@Multi: Ha! Henry Rollins! Was he a shrimp? He looks short. I met Glenn Danzig at SDCC and the dude was maybe 5'5" tops. Totally blew that "Mother" video I had playing in my mind.

The only time I can remember (before this one) pissing off a celebrity is when I asked Lou Ferrigno if I could take a picture with him. He said, "No problem," and just stood there. I lifted my arm up in front of his chest and flexed my arm and my friend snapped the pic. Lou gave me a look that said, "I got chunks of guys like you in my stool."

@InstigatorGIRL: I replied, "I don't mind embarassing myself," at which point Favreau answered my question. I even slipped in a third question (what a jerk I am), but you'll have to read that one in the Scarlett Johansson piece.

Yeah that's a good point. I have another round about question for you. After seeing IM2, are you more excited about The Avengers? I don't think I can ask that in any other way that would keep you from saying any spoilers...

Rockwell is one of my new favorite actors after seeing Moon. Thats cool that you asked about him and even cooler that RDJ "lost his shit" to use MPP's phrase.

LMAO @ Brent Good reply. Celebrity (if you wanna call him that) I pissed of was R.A. Mihailoff (Leatherface in TCM3.) He was a guess at my job and while he was standing next to my boss; my boss asked me how I liked the Chainsaw movies. I told them they sucked ass and you couldn't pay me enough to watch them or even act in them. Guy was like, "well shit a simple not my cup of tea would work." Boss then told me who he was and I laughed and said sorry but I don't sugar coat things. LMAO.

@MPP: Unlike many girl-men actors, Lou is the real deal. IF he has any balls left after the steroids, and IF I grabbed them for the sake of an epic picture, my head would be squashed like a bug. The dude is, like, 60 and he's HUGE!

@DasBoot: Yes and no. There are VERY definite tracks laid down for The Avengers in this movie. There's a dossier that says "Avengers Initiative" on it, and two references to one of the, ahem, most famous members of the team, but...crap, I can't say anything else without blowing it. Let's put it this way, after watching IM2, I'm more excited to see IM3 than The Avengers.

Man there's no way I could go to something like that, and not be able to talk about it right away! I'd probably have charges pressed against me, because I couldn't keep my mouth shut. Ha You're a better man than me!

@Brent

What exactly were your questions, especially the one about Rockwell?

I'd really like to know how you phrased the question to guage a reason why RDJ would react that way. Did he maybe take what you said out of context in some way?

thanks

Damn Brent - taking on RDJ? You have balls of adamantium my friend! ;) I'm actually surprised he got so pissed because I honestly cant see why he would from the questions you asked which I would say were perfectly normal and in no way offensive..!

I don't blame him getting pissed either.

Your question was negatively phrased, so it's not surprising that you got a negative response.

I don't think he was pissed, that's just the way RDJ is but whatever. And I had forgotten about that Broadway play but I still wish Sam Rockwell would have been there. Oh well, I'm excited to see him at the premiere :')

Ryden - 4/24/2010, 7:45 AM
Yeah the Rockwell as Iron Man thing isn't a bad question but I wouldn't so quixkly assume that thier was some "beef" with Rockwell and the rest of the crew because of an absence so I've got to be honest I don't really blame RDJ.

@Brent Man surprizing... and sort of depressing. He REALLY didn't like you for some reason, almost like he was prejudiced. Maybe he was like "hey that's the guy from CBM.com" - "I'll give him some shit". lol... Or maybe you did strike a chord.

On the upside, you have now forever ruined my image of Danzig and that Mother video as well =P

@Poni I CANNOT believe you did that to Rollins LOL... Always thought that guy was pretty cool - shit he's probably the only person ever to sing on a Tool song... or it's the other way around - I'd oughtta know that.

You guys are some crazy mofos.

Hey Brent, these are great man, fair play. If I had read this cold without knowing that you were there first hand I would have honestly thought RDJ was ripping the piss. I was watching him on J Ross the other night and he came across just as snarky. But obviously you heard his tone and what not.

No offence to you personally Brent, but if 48and2's theory is right, I wouldn't blame him. CBM's april fool's story about RDJ going on a relapse bender wasn't in particularly good taste.

I listened to the audio and it didnt appear his voice and deamoner changed all that much. I wasnt there so I cant say exactly who he looked. However the question didnt really needed to be asked. It was kinda out of place. You honestly expect RDJ to not be mad and you actually think your going to get a real anwser out of Jon F. when he is sitting right next to RDJ.
DudeLove721
DudeLove721 - 4/24/2010, 3:24 PM
Yeah I have to say I don't blame him for getting angry. I understand the info you were trying to get Brent but when you phrase something negatively like that and there is no "feud" going on, I don't blame the dude for getting pissed off and remaining that way towards you. I'd imagine he gets stuff like that all the time and would imagine it gets a bit old and irritating after awhile. Here he is, ready to talk about something he's really proud of and it sounds like someone is trying to use that to cause trouble and take away the focus from the actual film.

Like I said, I understand what you were trying to do but I can also understand RDJ's side of it too.
Bijous
Bijous - 4/24/2010, 7:34 PM
I think it's great that you asked those questions. Why should you have to tip-toe around RDJ just because he's a movie star? Why would he even get threatened by the question? He's a multi-millionaire headlining two major franchises and possibly a third if that bollocks about Oz is true and little ol' Sam Rockwell is still making indie movies and appearing on Broadway.
KeithM
KeithM - 4/24/2010, 10:06 PM
@Bijous: "Why should you have to tip-toe around RDJ just because he's a movie star?"

Why shouldn't you be respectful just because he's a movie star? It's not a question of tip-toeing - there was no reason to suppose there was a beef, just because Rockwell wasn't there, so asking the question in that way was just rude. Brent made a negative assumption without having a good reason to make it and RDJ was absolutely right to take exception. Why should HE have to tip-toe around people just because he's a movie star?

"Why isn't Sam here?" is plenty - to add "is there a beef?" is unprofessional, rude and utterly pointless - even if there was a "beef" do you seriously think they'd state so in a press junket?

The fact that Rockwell was working (which you could have easily found out just by checking) and if, in fact, there wasn't any beef at all, then it completely justifies RDJ's reaction.

If there had been a lot of rumours of a fall-out then it might be justified asking for them to "clear the air", but in this case it just seemed like muck-raking and therefore NOT justified at all.

I'm sorry if this offends, and I'm sure there'll be plenty of people leaping to Brent's defence, but after reading a number of people actually supporting this lowest-of-the-tabloids style question, I felt it needed to be said more strongly.

@Brent: You've always seemed quite professional as a rule, but you let yourself and the site down with that question imo. I hope on reflection you see why, because it would be a concern if you see that kind of antagonistic, negative style of questioning as the right way to go about things.
Ryden
Ryden - 4/25/2010, 8:23 AM
@Keith- Couldn't agree with you more. If you were to look at it from RDJ's perspective all he sees is someone supposedly trying to stir some shit and he's angry about it, I can't believe people are saying RDJ was in the wrong here...there's nothing wrong with his ego but he has the right to get pissed off if someone asks him a rude and unjustified question.
bsprecher
bsprecher - 4/25/2010, 3:52 PM
@KeithM/Ryden: I'm sorry you guys feel that way. I wasn't trying to be antagonistic or "stir up trouble," I just genuinely wanted to know why one of my favorite actors and a major, major character in the movie is not getting the same promotion as the rest of the actors. I was pretty surprised by RDJ's reaction, but Favreau didn't seem to think anything of it and happily answered it to my satisfaction.

Look, I loved the movie or I wouldn't have spent 6 hours making the round-trip to L.A. and staying in a hotel at my won expense and then spending 9 hours transcribing, formating and posting these articles. However, the fact of the matter is, the press room was filled, primarily, with fanboys who worship the ground that the actors walk on. Nobody asked even a remotely controversial question. In fact, most questions that were asked have already been asked countless times before. Don Cheadle was asked how it feels to take over for Terrence Howard. That was the only question asked of him and we've heard it a million times before. At least I had the balls to ask something out of the ordinary.

So, go ahead and sit back in front of your computers and be critical of me. It takes no effort to do so. At least I'm going out and trying to find the news, whatever and wherever it may be.
