Iron Man 2 Reaches $300 Million at the US Box Office!

It is a great time to be a comic book fan!

Just imagine The Avengers in 2012 after Cap and Thor are hits with general audiences. Plus, all of the fanboys who will see this. I'm looking at crowded cinemas.

This might be a reasonably good time to be a comic book MOVIE fan, given the continuing success of the genre which will only encourage more movies to be made, but I don't know about this being a good time to be a comic book BOOK fan. Both of the "Big Two" have devolved to the point that all they can do is a nonstop series of massive "events" which render individual titles barely comprehensible if you're not buying any other tied-in books and cheap shocks like killing iconic characters to sell books. The '70s or '80s were much better times to be a fan of the books themselves, with classic stories and (often) great art. The stories were almost all self-contained within individual titles, and the few times that somebody died in a book, it actually MEANT something. If those characters came back, it wasn't for years and years afterwards. It wasn't just "we'll kill this famous character off to generate some mainstream news buzz and sell a few more books. We'll bring him back in eighteen months with another convoluted explanation for how the character 'really didn't die' or 'was brought back from the dead'". Those older books weren't budget-breakers either. They weren't usually more than a dollar or two apiece, leaving money free to try out other titles that caught your interest or that a friend or guy at the comic shop was raving about.

It's only there because of the first 2 weeks. People aren't lining up for IM2 right now it might make another 15 million domestically, but given most trends and the upcoming releases of different movies (Toy Story, Jonah Hex, Grown Ups, Cyrus), it'll be close. If it were a truly great movie it would be closer to 400 or 450 right now.

Also, when a movie costs 200 million to make and it has only GROSSED 300 million, the studio really isn't making that much money in the big picture. Half of that probably goes to the theaters themselves.

Leee777@ agree, but SLJ has great potencial as an actor to play Nick Fury. The reason I think he didnt went good, is because:

Justin Theroux is to blame, cuz he fkd up with the script and the story line as well.

He was put to replace the original team of writers(Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby) of Iron Man 1.0; he should be fired.

Fergus has much more experience than Theroux as writer; Theroux got this job with IM2 and, voila, fkd it up.

Also, was just hard to see a (almost) retarded Justin Hammer with a loli pop; the "ex-wife" bomb; a iron drunk man shooting at cocktails with his armor; a whiplash holding IM & WM in opposed sides, like saying: "cmon guys, hurry up, it's the final scene, I'm waiting for you to finish me off".

Posting LOL in every comment you make does not make cool, anyway Iron Man 2 rocks and the box office has spoken. It is a fact, not fiction.

@FutureCBMHero:Your math is off. A film that cost $200 mil to make and has grossed close to $600mil worldwide has made $400mil! And that doesn't even include profits from merchandising tie-ins and licensing, not to mention revenue from upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray sales! What, does foreign currency not count?

@comicb00kguy - Same here! I've been collecting Avengers since '78 and didn't think it would EVER be feasible to make a big budget Avengers movie! We're in a golden era when SFX can offer both high quality and affordability AND can be produced in a timely manner! I'm ecstatic about that! So many possiblities have opened up in the last fifteen years due to advances in technology!

Your comments about the comic book industry are dead on! It's nice to know that there are people on this site that really know what they are talking about! Your posts are always refreshing to read for this very reason!

@Ror - Due to the approach that Favreau has chosen to take with the IM franchise, it was inevitable that the second installment would fall short of the first, given the choice of villain and the plot! I'm a little less excited about part three than I should be because part II kind of killed some of the anticipation for me. I wanted to see the Titanium Man and the Crimson Dynamo, but now they would be a bit redundant! IM2 probably could have used two super-powered villains instead of one, but Fav decided to err on the side of caution with that one! I feel that WM should have been held off at least until the third film, but oh well! What's done is done!

@ GUNSMITH - Hopefully we'll see the REAL Silver Centurion armor in all its bulked up glory! That suit was the sh*t!

@FutureCBMHero - I understand all of that. Sounds like your speculating. Obviously the picture's grosses are high enough to warrant sequels and spinoffs!

If a project has made double its budget it's considered a success! That is the goal the studios have in mind! Given that Marvel produced IM2 themselves, I'd say they stand to make an even bigger profit than if IM2 were farmed out to an established production house!
