IRON MAN Was Never A Serious Possibility Says MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT's Tom Cruise

Are you familiar with how Robert Downey Jr. secured the role of Iron Man? At the time, many at Marvel Studios didn't want the down on his luck star as Tom Cruise was said to be the preferred choice.

Could you picture Marvel Studios preparing to close out a historic cinematic chapter in Avengers: Infinity War with Tom Cruise in the Iron Man armor instead of Robert Downey Jr.?  There have been several reports over the years regarding how RDJ had to fight to secure the role back in September 2006 as Marvel brass weren't sold on the actor.  However, director Jon Favreau went to bat for Downey and the rest is history.

But just how close did Cruise get to 'armoring' up as Tony Stark? While doing press for Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Cruise revealed, "Not close. Not close, and I love Robert Downey Jr. I can’t imagine anyone else in that role, and I think it’s perfect for him."

Tom Crusie has played a lot of roles and character in his storied career, except one.  Will there ever be a day which sees him suit up as a superhero?  "I look at a movie and I don’t rule anything out. It’s, ‘What’s the story? Does it interest me? Do I feel this is where the audience would like to see me in? What can I learn?’ And ‘What can I contribute?’ That’s how I choose my movies."

There's gotta be something for him, I can't think right now.

Would love to see him as a Superhero or Villain in the MCU before he can't do crazy stunts anymore. Seems like he is willing for sure...I mean he did to Mummy.

Really interesting to get some insight into how he chooses his films. Great actor.

I wonder what role he could play in the MCU?

I’d like to see Tom and RDJ standing next to each other.

@regularmovieguy - The closest to that is to watch them both in Tropic Thunder.

Never understood why he would ever be considered. He doesn't fit the character AT ALL.

@BlackBeltJones

5’7, tip top shape. Charisma to spare. What doesn’t fit?

@regularmovieguy - RDJ's charisma and charm is just---different.

His Tony is flippant in the face of disaster, casual on the brink of ruin.' That means a lot. That shows, how much of Downey is within Tony, that we so love. The actor brought with him a persona that is so cool and off beat, we instantly fell for it.

Me personally, wouldn't see that coming from Cruise.
