Iron Man 3 massively exceeded expectations at the box office back in 2013, earning over $1.2 billion and scoring the acclaim of critics with a solid 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shane Black took charge of the threequel after Jon Favreau decided to move on from the franchise and while it's fair to say that fans enjoyed this action-packed adventure for the Armored Avenger, there were some liberties taken with the source material which definitely upset a lot of people.

I am, of course, talking about The Mandarin. While it initially appeared as if Ben Kingsley would be playing a comic accurate version of the iconic Iron Man villain, the movie's big twist revealed that he was actually Trevor Slattery, an alcoholic, English actor.

Ouch!

Some loved it and plenty hated it. Regardless, we now have a new batch of concept art which puts the spotlight on some different designs for The Mandarin, some of which are equally as out there as what ended up on the big screen and others which may make fans of the comic book version of The Mandarin very happy indeed. Would have been great if he was the actual mandarin

@JonAwesome - yeah. It bugs me that people call this a great twist. The only good part about it was inverting expectations that ben Kingsley is playing the bad guy. Other than that, its replacing iron mans arch nemesis and genuinely unique opponent for the mcu tony with the exact same "im a business man with a score to settle with the stark family and cool tech to take him on" villain we got in 2 previous movies (3 if you count homecoming). Only change was that this "mandarin" has fire powers instead of the suit like the others had.

@Origame - the fake terrorist twist is indeed good. Too bad they used the mandarin name for it.

@Fogs - it wasnt even good taking the whole franchise into consideration. They built up actual terrorists who kidnapped tony. And we never actually had iron man vs terrorists before

@Origame - hmm 1st thing he did was to free Gulmira.

A fake terrorist theme is pretty unheard of in movies, at least to my knowledge.

But I agree it could've been taken in a better direction, maybe at least ending with All Hail The King

@Fogs - 1) thats not what im talking about. Im talking about a movie thats iron man vs terrorists.

2) thats just die hard. That also had a fake terrorist theme for its entire franchise pretty much.

@Origame - YEah i relly thought that Mandarin is a badass in the movie until the twist........i was starting to like this villain a lot and then.......

Well Shane Black ruined Predator as well......

@Omega - yeah. How people view both iron man 3 and predator really show me the blinder they put on for the mcu. Both of those movies are poorly thought out with lame twists, and yet they praise one while bash the other because mcu. The mandarin twist really is as bad as predators trying to kill an autistic kid to gain his autism powers.

@BlackBeltJones - the Kingsley Mandarin has a heavy Ringo Starr vibe.

Still love Ben Kingsley in that film, in “both” roles.

Feliz Dia de las Mascaras, mi gente!
Most of this look cool, but they should have used the actual Chinese Mandarin. Instead of an actor with the mixed Mandarin-Taliban look.

Not gonna lie, I’ve grown to really like the Mandarin twist.
Origame

@ArthurMorgan - for the joke its great and hilarious. For how it effects the rest of the movie? It makes the movie boring and illogical. Now the main villain is Obidaia Stane 3.0. And hes apparently just pretending to be a terrorist to cover up his failed experiments blowing up...yet he kidnaps the president? And i legitimately cant tell if his plan actually involved going after tony since that only happened after the news broadcast.

Never getting to see a real Mandarin in all his epic glory taking on RDJ’s Iron Man is one of very few huge blunders of this amazing MCU if that is indeed what comes to pass.

I really like Iron Man 3 but Ben Kinglsleys performance as the terrorist Mandarin was so menacing and good. I would have preferred if they didn’t have the twist but the movies good nonetheless
