From Academy Award®--winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes "John Carter"—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). "John Carter" is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

"How can I make this film so it can stand on its own? Taking a period approach, so you feel like it’s antiquated, I felt was the way out of that. I kept saying, I want a really great historical Martian film," director Andrew Stanton said in the interview with Hero Complex.
And he also talked a little bit about Tars Tarkas, the Martian warrior played by Willem Dafoe via motion capture:
"Anybody I had ever met that had read the book, that tended to be their favorite character. As a kid, you wanted to meet him, and you were kind of jealous that John Carter got to hang out with him. Tars Tarkas was one thing we didn’t want to mess with at all."
Along Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe, the rest of the cast includes Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston, James Purefoy, Dominic West, Thomas Haden Church and Ciarán Hinds. John Carter is set to hit theatres on March 9!
