The future America is an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The film opens in 3D September 21st.

The movie was really good - Too bad about the attendance and support . I watched it in its first week of release in South Africa and it played on the smallest screen with only about 30 people in the theatre.

Marketing was virtually zero for this movie - the only reason I knew about it was because of this site.

So sad the fate of this movie... It was really great.

@Tman. I watched it in Pretoria and it was also empty. I can't understand the media in our country: when district 9 was released, it was being promoted by the media, yet with dredd, there is barely a mention. Kinda sad if you ask me.

Just saw this last night and the film was great IMO, its not getting the justice it deserves in ticket sales and while watching it made me forget bout Stallones version. i just hope the studio gives the sequel a chance, id like to see more.

Yadda yadda yadda. So many people say "this is a great film" yet so few actually BOTHERED to see it. And the key word is

BOTHERED.

Whatever makes people bother to see a film, well, this film sure sucked at it. My guess is the character isn't appealing enough to a worldwide audience. Speaking as a '30 years reading 2000AD' fan (!) that is a hard pill to swallow. If one character deserved to be huge it was Judge Dredd but it wasn't meant to be.

Dredd is a solid movie thats a fact.

@Lazenca

well district 9 had better marketing only because the producer for the movie was Peter Jackson

@dreddhead123

the movie is freaking great i dont know whats your damn issue about it.

Reasons why Dredd didn't make money:

A: Who the heck read the comic book? I, a former collecter, never payed it any attention.
B: The Sly movie blew goat chunks. Hardcore chunks.
C: While I love Karl Urban, he's not a headliner
D: The marketing sucked because they didn't expect anything from this "franchise"
E: I love comic book movies but c'mon..there are cheesy costumes and then there are CHEESY costumes. And this is of the cheesIEST variety.
F: Did I mention anything about the horrible concept? Even as a comic, its pretty effin' stupid.

keep in mind, above list has nothing to do with how the movie actually turned out. Just why no one decided to watch this. I will, but I'll DL it and watch it on the crapper or while I'm on the treadmill for a distraction during my 6 mile run

Judge Dredd is too great a character for America. It's too great. Let them have their Taken and their Loopers and their Twilight.

He can't fly.

He can't climb walls.

His parents weren't murdered.

He doesn't have an alter-ego.

He is the law.

You can't a problem with that, creep?

That's how I would have promoted Dredd. The teaser trailer should have used these taglines:

He can't fly.

He can't climb walls.

His parents weren't murdered.

He doesn't have an alter-ego.

He is the law.

You can't a problem with that, creep?

------------------------------------------------

That's how to market Judge Dredd. There should have been an earlier marketing campaign to get people interested.

@ jazzman The movie industry here in south africa is small compared to other countries, therefore when a hollywood movie is filmed here, it gets a lot of coverage from the south african media. It becomes a matter of pride for a movie to be shot here with some local actors (i could recognise a few south african actors). It's the reason why I'm baffled by the lack of interest.

i agree my movie was absolutely empty but it didnt do well in america because it is a british comic book not american so most of the mainstream american media audience wont know who he is or know how good this movie actuallly was

just my 2 cents

@Pathogen
Your negative viewpoint is just your opinion not fact.

Dredd is a great character & both his comic & movie uniform looks damn cool.
The concept is tremendous & given a bigger budget & marketing strategy the movie would have gone from a real good film into an instant classic.

This is why it has not succeeded with audiences, the dismal Stallone version ruined the property.
If not for that, more people would have gone seen this..of they would have heard about it.

@MarvelWeiner the 3d was very understated in the movie - I barely noticed it aside from a few scenes. I think this actually enhanced the movie though. I enjoyed this much more that District 9 which I thought was overrated

This is the first time I even heard scenes were filmed in Johannesburg. The highway sequence was a 30min drive from where I live. Seriously low profile on the publicity.

I'd argue that the marketing in England was pretty good, TV spots everywhere, billboards, i put the trailer in front of everything at my cinema (Who didn't get the film in the end anyway).

I read somewhere (maybe on here) that this is an example of a studio not finding it's audience, and thus condemning it themselves, Lionsgate ended up looking like they couldn't care less, and after the whole "Standing ovation at Cannes" i'm amazed by that.

It'll do really well on Blu Ray, hopefully. But i hate with a passion everybody who wanted to see this film and downloaded it instead. of going to the cinema.

jessepostal - 10/8/2012, 5:44 AM
I don't see why all the "great film" comments are pouring in, have you not seen many action movies before??? Maybe i've seen to many because this one just seemed to go thru the motions like many others. There were some cool kills but that was about it.
Ceejay
Ceejay - 10/8/2012, 6:52 AM
@jessepostal - It's probably the most overratted budget movie of the year. There's not much going on with the plot, the performances are passable and all the action is just people getting shot as many ways as possible. Granted that's all it takes to please the small faction of fans for this type of movie but I'm clueless to why they'd think that makes it the greatest movie of the year and even more amazed why they'd think the general public should respond to this type of 'excessively' violent flick after decades ignoring them at the box office?

Seriously, go through the top 50 movies of all time and see just how many films this violent even make the list. If they had toned the gore down a touch and made the screenplay more interesting then it would have made a decent buck.

Agreed

I agree the gore and violence did hurt the movie. This is one of the very few movies I watched by myself since my wife is not a fan of ultraviolent movies - A pity though - since it wasn't nearly as violent as some of Simon Bisley's work on Dredd

yeah outside of this site...I didn't hear anything about this movie until one week before the release...so people unfamiliar would be lost....also I had people bashing this thinking it was a remake of Stallone move and have no idea it was a comic b4 and this movie is more true to the book.
