The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The film opens in 3D September 21st.

U know what... If 'Dredd' is good I'd b interested in seeing Urban as the Bat, n if he doesn't get cast I hope the next actor who dons the cowl uses a similar voice 2 his Dredd voice... So far what I've heard sounds like a toned down Bale voice, I can imagine it working well...

The trailer made the line seem cheesy but it really works her.

As to his voice, I think Batman doesn't even need to be dark and gritty. Kevin Conroy shifted between deep and gruff to sly and manipulative depending on the situation. It just really needs to be distinct from Bruces voice and hold up in conversation.

Poor Karl!, of all the people he gets that GMTV breakfast show reject Eamonn Holmes now appointed to Sky News to interview him! >.< That guy is such a clueless moron, I bet he had to google who Judge Dredd was before the interview.

I think Dredd 3D (naff title) will struggle at the worldwide box office. Reasons why...

1) Too violent. The comic book Judge Dredd offset the violence with comedy, social observation, satire. Garland's screenplay has none other than a few dry quips from Dredd.

2) The character of Judge Dredd is too severe and disturbing for a mainstream audience. A 2000AD fan saw the Thursday preview screening held in London and posted this comment:

" Dredd becomes something quite terrifying when you see him onscreen. I spent a lot of time thinking about how utterly terrified you'd be having to stare that helmet down. There's a great power to blocking the eyes."

I've always thought one of the huge obstacles when transferring Judge Dredd from comic strip format to film format is how do you make a "terrifying" (anti)hero likable enough to make the audience root for him? It's almost impossible other than hoping the main villains in the film are 'worse' than Dredd!

Garland and DNA's approach of a grim, very violent Judge Dredd film with little humour and zero over-the-top social observation could be the kiss of death to a franchise. I doubt there are enough people prepared for a character as unrelentingly mean and tough as Judge Dredd.

I'm sure John Wagner would have softened Judge Dredd's edges to make him more appealing to a worldwide film-going audience but I suspect Alex Garland doesn't have the talent or foresight to do that. This is just grit and violence with little else - every review mentions how violent it is - and I can't see it appealing to enough people. We'll find out in the next few weeks...

This film contains a really graphic sex and violence scene. I am lifelong 2000AD/Judge Dredd reader and it's a great shame Garland had the nerve to write that scene into his screenplay and film it. And shame on John Wagner for not speaking out about it. When you see the film you'll know what I'm talking about it. Trust me, it's seriously nasty. It's just nasty and totally unnecessary. 2000AD's Judge Dredd strip has NEVER done that scene.

I HOPE THIS FILM FLOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@dreddhead123: (naff name) Yes we know. You've said. On every article about Dredd on the web (where you're not banned at least). Please go away.

You do know you can't be a real Dredd fan if you want the film to flop, right? You're not a fan at all. You're just a bitter troll.

Judgement is three years in the cubes for hyping a judge. Four more years for including an interview. I know.. that was just stupid..
