Comic book movies continue to dominate on the big screen. This spring/summer saw the release of massive tentpoles such as Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Captain America: Civil War, and X-Men Apocalypse, all of which have made massive box office earnings. While critical reception to these films have been up and down, there's no denying that superheroes and their adventures resonate with audiences.

During an interview with Collider for The Conjuring 2, director James Wan (who is directing his own superhero film in DC's Aquaman) weighed in on why he thinks there's such a boom for this particular niche. "I think a big part of it is because we’re finally at the point where we can actually tell these larger than life stories and have the technology to make them work. That’s one factor, that we can create these whizz-bang visuals to go with the story and ultimately superheroes say a lot about the society we grow up in. Pretty much all the good superheroes have some kind of social commentary about why they are who they are. It teaches values and so it’s a very important thing. On one hand it works on a surface level because it’s super incredible to watch from a visual feast standpoint but on another level it works on a very human level it works on a very human, emotional level and I think it makes it fun for us."

There's been a lot of swirling talk from critics regarding "fatigue" in the genre, but given the booming success of certain films, it's probably safe to say that the genre is here to stay as long as the films continue to be full of great stories and interesting characters.

What do you make of Wan's comments? Sound off below!

I think that as long as they can appeal to a large group of people, they will keep doing well, also important to include other Genre's into the mix.

Most of my friends and co-workers don't watch many of them but the one that they all seemed to have watched is Deadpool, mainly through word of mouth about how funny it is.

Really hoping that DC have a good movie, as Superman is my favourite hero.

So far my favourite films have been First Avenger and Man Of Steel.

Is there ever going to be anyone who looks more like SUperman than Christopher Reeves?

As long as I'm alive, the genre will never die.

BvS: Ultimate Edition has leaked early for some of those who have preordered a digital copy. Apparently, the movie flows a lot better. The e-mail scene is still in tact (unfortunately). No word on the Watchmen-style end credits sequence...I'm guessing there's nothing special since it wasn't brought up. About three more minutes have been added to the Batman and Superman fight sequence.

Wan has a good head on his shoulders, I'm really anticipating Aquaman purely because of him.

@MattBellissimo - i won't lie, I'm still concerned with momoa. I am still really excited to see what wan does with this movie though. I've been waiting for an aquaman or namor movie for forever. I'm so curious to see how they handle a movie with a civilization that lives underwater. Hopefully momoa proves me wrong, and we get a great movie. Visuals should certainly be epic.

@MattBellissimo - Yeah. I mean, I don't know much about Aquaman. But I loved Geoff Johns' first issue, and I desperately want to read Throne of Atlantis as I liked what they did with the character in that movie. But it was James Wan that got me the most excited for the movie. I loved the Insidious movies, and The Conjuring wasn't just a great horror movie, but a great movie period. Plus he's perfect for what Zack Snyder started in DC Films. The Live Action graphic novel. His films are kind of done in a similar way where the images tell as much story as the dialogue. With Zack Snyder's visuals in terms of the looks of all the characters, and James Wan's equally brilliant visual storytelling, this could be one of DC Films' best.
