EDITORIAL: The Pros And Cons Of Christian Bale Returning As Batman In JUSTICE LEAGUE

The news that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale may reteam for the Justice League film has been met with a lot of buzz, as well as plenty of doubts. Hit the jump for my list of pros and cons of continuing The Dark Knight Trilogy in the superhero ensemble.

This week, we saw arguably the biggest and most exciting CBM rumor of the year so far, stating that Christopher Nolan would be overseeing Warner Bros.’ troubled Justice League movie. This comes as a surprise, since the director of The Dark Knight Trilogy previously said that he wouldn’t be involved with the DC Comics superhero ensemble or any other Batman projects. Zack Snyder, director of this summer’s Man Of Steel, will also serve as a producer and may even take the helm. Perhaps even more surprising was the revelation that the film was being planned as a vehicle for Christian Bale to return as the Dark Knight and team up with Henry Cavill‘s Superman. However, this report (which came from the reliable El Mayimbe) was countered by our own Jake Lester’s recent scoop (which you can check out by clicking HERE) saying that Bale will not don the cowl for another film. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out after Man Of Steel opens in theaters, but the idea of seeing Bale as the Caped Crusader once more has been causing a lot of buzz and a nearly equal amount of questioning.

Personally, as a huge fan of The Dark Knight Trilogy, I would be thrilled to see Christian Bale’s Batman alongside Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel and other heroes. He has been arguably our best Caped Crusader to date, and it would be impossible to imagine how anyone else could deliver a better performance. At the same time, however, it would make perfect sense story-wise to leave Nolan’s trilogy as a stand-alone piece and bring in another actor to wear the Batsuit in a rebooted take which would be closer to the comic version. Below, I’ve compiled a list of both pros and cons of continuing the story of Bale’s Bruce Wayne in Justice League.

Pros:

#1 - Bringing In A Familiar Face

Business-wise, it would be absolutely ideal for Warner Bros. to at least pursue Nolan and Bale to return for Justice League, seeing how well the last two Batman movies did. Marvel’s The Avengers grossed $1.5B last summer, despite none of the solo movies not grossing a billion. However, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises have both surpassed the $1B mark worldwide, making Bale’s Caped Crusader an instantly recognizable face. Additionally, if Man Of Steel does as well as WB is hoping, and Nolan/Snyder/David S. Goyer are all on board, then Justice League could very well be the first superhero movie to gross $2B worldwide. I can’t see it doing quite as well financially if they bring in a completely new take on Batman that the audience isn‘t familiar with.

#2 - A Greater Foundation To Build On

Perhaps the biggest worry concerning Justice League has been the approach of only Man Of Steel building up to it, with likely only one familiar face and 4-6 completely new cinematic characters (assuming that both Batman and Green Lantern are rebooted). However, connecting The Dark Knight Trilogy, as risky as it is story-wise, helps Man Of Steel build a stronger foundation and create a more cohesive universe.

#3 - An Older, Experienced Batman

I think we all agree that the Justice League movie's Batman needs to be a very experienced hero, perhaps more experienced and older than the other League members. We have seen the Caped Crusader’s adventures in The Dark Knight Trilogy, and despite entering retirement twice, Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne certainly has experience. Perhaps they can shape a DC Movie Universe like Bruce Timm’s Animated Universe, where we saw several years of Batman’s adventures before joining the Justice League.

#4 - The Best Actor For The Role

This is certainly up to debate, and this section in particular is from my point of view/opinion. As I said before, Christian Bale has been arguably our best Batman to date, and while he hasn’t portrayed the character as comic book accurate as some would like, he delivered a human and believable take on the Dark Knight in three movies. Of course, there are other actors who can be brilliant in the role, but not to the same level as Bale’s. I can also see him having wonderful chemistry with Henry Cavill.

Cons:

#1 - When Is A Conclusion A Conclusion?

Both Bale and Nolan have stated many times that The Dark Knight Rises was the end of their take on Batman (even though the former expressed interest in playing the character again if the latter gave him a sufficient story), and many agree that the ending concluded Bruce Wayne’s story arc perfectly. I’m confident that Nolan will give his approval to the best possible story should this particular version of Batman continue in Justice League, but it would be a stretch to bring him back. The only way this would work properly is if Wayne came back as Batman again when a major threat arrives, a storyline which was already covered in TDKR and would be redundant to see again on film.

#2 - Could Be More Comic Accurate

As stated before, Bale’s Batman alongside Cavill’s Superman sounds wonderful on paper, but how would it actually fare? To many comic fans, the biggest flaw with The Dark Knight Trilogy’s Batman is that he just isn’t as powerful as the comic book version. The comic book incarnation regularly fights super villains, aliens, etc., while Bale’s Batman had his hands full with terrorists and even had trouble fighting dogs. Not somebody who can take on Darkseid in my opinion. I’d be more than open to see how this can be fixed in Justice League if they’re going that route, but this is the main reason why a reboot may be a better option: to deliver a Batman that’s as intelligent, strong and unique as the version we all know and love.

In conclusion, the idea of Christian Bale reprising his role as Batman in Justice League has both its strengths and its setbacks. While it would be amazing to see the actor play the Caped Crusader again and to see him working in a wider DC Universe, I’m not sure if that’s realistically possible. Some things may be fixed in a JL script (such as Bruce Wayne suddenly becoming more powerful and like the comic version), but some issues wouldn’t allow a smooth story transition from the end of The Dark Knight Rises if not handled properly. Regardless, if there’s anybody who can continue Wayne’s story following TDKR, it’s Christopher Nolan and the rest of the gang. Still, I wouldn’t mind if a rebooted, more comic accurate Batman was brought on board, but it would make perfect sense business-wise to bring Bale back and allow a better foundation to build upon than merely Man Of Steel (since no other solo DC films will be released before Justice League, apparently).

I sort of wish they would use Bale... but make it a different continuity than the Nolan films. Would that be too weird?

I could care less about Christian Bale as Batman, just keep Sir Michael Caine as Alfred, WB!!!!

Having watched the entire trilogy again, I now see why I like Nolan's Batman so much. It wasn't because of the realism, the Joker or Nolan's direction--though it didn't hurt. I fell in love with Michael Caine's Alfred...

Nice article. I was thinking about doing one myself, but you pretty much covered everything.
While I wouldn't call Batman's more human limits a flaw of Nolan's trilogy, they're among the main issues that really make me believe that we need to see Batman re-imagined pre-Justice League so we're comfortable with seeing him in this sort of larger than life conflict situation. It's hard for me to imagine Bale's Batman in the midst of the chaotic battle against the Chitauri in the Avengers. That's the kind of stuff the Justice League would have to face. Arkham City's style of Batman would feel much more at home there.
CavEl
CavEl - 3/9/2013, 5:46 AM
Also, to Bale, I don't know if I'd want Bale back if Nolan isn't directing.

Nothing Bale did in the trilogy stood out for me, it was all Nolan's direction of how Batman moves through the shadows that was appealing to me.

Great write-up! It gives a good description of the entire, panoramic picture that WB is looking at down the road.

Personally, let TDK trilogy rest in peace and bring in a more powerful, detective-centric new Bruce Wayne.

Actually, if any Batman is a threat to Darkseid, Darkseid is not Darkseid. The one thing I love about Nolan's Batman is the fact that Batman wasn't an unrealistic, overpowered, PIS asshole who could take down the Justice League, The Avengers and God like he could in the pre-52 run.

Good write-up. I particularly agree on the point of a more experienced Batman - the seniority of Bale's Batman can build a very interesting relationship with Cavill's "twenty-something" Superman, among many other things. Plus, the future setting The Dark Knight Rises established can provide this movie universe with a vast amount of possibilities, and it especially can simply put an end to the problem that is the realism of this existing universe: In the next eight years, the standard of "realism" may not be as realistic as our realism any more, opening the way for superpowers, et cetera. I really like the tone Nolan has set his Batman universe in, and I surely won't mind seeing more of it, so there's the reason to justify the existence of a group of larger-than-world figures in it.

However, I think the con kind of outweighs the pro: Nolan's trilogy has been closed perfectly. It's not just my view, but they've established it as such. Bruce Wayne has moved on, John Blake has embraced his legacy, and so on. I particularly am not a big fan of the idea of a Batman other than Bruce Wayne participating in the "true" DC movie universe, and I so far haven't seen any sensible way to make it work. Sure, they can kill off Blake, or whatever, but that seems to deconstruct the point of the character in the first place. Wouldn't it be ridiculous for Bruce to appoint such an inexperienced replacement, who gets killed off very soon? Of course, that can bring an impact to Bruce's character, but that's not exactly what I want to see. If anything, they can expand the concept of numerous Batmen (Batman, Inc.?) being active in this universe, but that's not what I'd really like to see, either. All in all, it's not an idea I'd like to see to happen. There are numerous ways it can go with, and they're all definitely interesting, but they're highly risky at the same time. And to me, these folks over at Warner Bros. aren't a party I'd like to see taking risks. So yeah, they can again leave this idea behind, and move on with a new Batman.

Okay there's something i wanted to keep myself from pointing out until i wrote an article about the wrong things with nolan's batman, but there's a big con that no one is thinking. And that is that besides him not having the detective, stratigical or martial artistic abilities from the comics, he's belt is empty. I'm serious. There's is nothing in nolan's famous bat-belt.

Bale's Bat-voice may get cringe-worthy at times, but he's disguising it while taking an active duty fighting crime. When you're busy beating up/being beaten up by bad guys, I bet you can't think of pulling off a smooth, disguised voice, either. The joke's getting a bit old.

As much as I can't wait to see a justice League film,I want to see a GOOD Justice League movie. And if a JL movie happens within the next five(at least)years,it's not going to be as good as it could/should be.
We had the ultimate and perfect comicbook movie trilogy with the Dark Knight trilogy, and that's how it's should stay.
Superman is no ironman or Thor.He is Superman,THE comic book hero, the father of all heroes!!He deserves a trilogy that's all his,and no build up to a shared universe. The movies must focus on him and him only.
If we want a desent JL movie,we have to wait.to do it right.

About the conclusion (Con #1), remember that he came back on a threat for Gotham that no one else could handle, while JL would be a threat that he could never face on his own, nor with the help of mere mortals or technology.
Bale's Batman could work in JL if he step aside from being Gotham's Dark Knight, and he is watching news of Superman in Metropolis, rumors of Amazons, a super fast red blur that is stoping criminals. He could be away building Brother Eye. Great article though.

@LEVITIKUZ...the question should be: WHY was he disguising his voice in that manner around complete strangers? Among his friends and colleges, the gruff voice wouldn't have worked, because we, as the audience, could easily distinguish Bale's slight speech impediment or hiss, so it stands to reason they would've been able to, as well. It's possible Bruce Wayne did limited media interviews, so an argument could be made for his voice being slightly more high profile than say your's or mine (considering we both haven't experience many news interviews), but he wasn't as high profile as Donald Trump, since he didn't host a TV show. The most logical reason wasn't a need to disguise his voice, but rather intimidate with it. But that still wouldn't justify a reason why he used the gruff voice among friends. It was ineffective as a cover, but effective for changing the tone between the characters for the audience ONLY. It was fairly silly when used in situations where he wasn't angry.

@ Alphadog -

"And that is that besides him not having the detective, stratigical or martial artistic abilities from the comics, he's belt is empty.

1.) What do you mean he doesn't have the detective skills?Do you guys want him to walk around with a magnifying glass? Let's just look at TDKR alone, shall we? He found Selina's prints, he uncovered her entire backstory, he found out where she lived.

2.) Isn't strategic?

3.) Doesn't have the martial artistic ability?

Even before he had formal training he was taking on 6 dudes...

Man, the Nolan Batman hate is so baseless.

Batman used the bat voice around people who knew he was Wayne because he was dedicated to the persona. It's boss shit that many will not understand.
CavEl
CavEl - 3/9/2013, 6:35 AM
And his belt isn't full? You mean his belt isn't a convenient PIS mechanism that the writers uses to have Batman have everything he needs everytime and everywhere? Because Batman had his fair share of gadgets...

Also, Bale voices, while I wish he would've toned it down a little more like he did in TDKR, was called for. Nolan told him to make his voice sound like a demon, and Bale went with a dark, gravely voice because Batman is supposed to bring fear into the hearts of criminals.

Get another actor for the role, one that can bring a more iconic comicbook-accurate Batman on screen.

He's a banged up human. So, he would be involved in a resource and intel capacity. Wayne would have handy resources and skills in a cosmic event. He would be useless alongside Superman and Green Lantern in the field. I imagine him manning the bridge of a large space craft, wandering around with a walking stick and a limp cracking codes, traitors and unveiling outrageous twists in a detective and PR position. The most action he'd get is if the bridge was compromised. Another reason why Batman would be unnecessary compared to Wayne, is because Batman's concealing suit and symbol is to fight crime anonymously as a beacon of hope for Gotham. His gadgets and tech would be handy and cool, but his suit wouldn't fit a cosmic threat situation. To have the actual Batman involved, I would have JGL in a Batman/Nightwing suit helping panicked citizens in Gotham, as he does, reinstalling hope at street level. Batman is useless to a JL team, but Bruce Wayne isn't. That way you could have Batman fight Gotham criminals and aliens and not have unreasonable contrast in abilities. You could have Bale in JL and a fit JGL as a continued Batman without a reboot. POW!

if they could legitamately combine nolans batman with superman in a justice league movie, then your are going to get box office gold.

To me the Nolans batman is the greatest ever superhero trilogy. i just dont know if it would fit into the world with superman.
However remember the classic batman series? i didnt see how superman would fit into his world too. But they managed it perfectly with world finest and even stretched that into a Justice league series that is classic folklore so you never know.

Don't get me wrong I like Bale. I thought he was a great Bruce Wayne, he looked bad ass in the suit, but the voice didn't do it for me, although in batman begins it wasn't so bad.

The problem of having a Bale again as part of this Justice League is that Batman is a character that makes money for sure! So if you use Bale again then it means you have to continue the Nolan story for years to come, after JL movie what going to happen to the Batman character? we wont see more movies until a sequel of the JL? That wrong and that why they wont bring Batman-Bale to the JL

I don't see any pro to be honest, and the reason is simple, putting Bale in the JLA movie would destroy the reality Nolan tried to create for the Dark Knight trilogy, that reality isn't about aliens and supernatural beings, it's about the a guy who puts on a mask and a cape to save his city from criminality and terrorism, it is set in a world that's exactly like ours and is telling us, O.K this shit might or could happen, that's the reason why the trilogy worked and is so awesome, because of the story and characters set in this particular reality, I mean think about it, the idea of superman in this universe is not only wrong it is goddamn preposterous and yes another important thing is, the story with this Batman is over, there is nothing left, don't [frick]ing ruin it for [frick]'s sake!

yeah sweet pros and cons @PaulRom. i loved bale as batman 100%. i would love to see him back, but i just can't see how that could plausibly be done. if nolan can figure a way to make it real then i'm on board. at the same time i suppose it's as good a time as ever to reboot cinematic batman as i assume bale won't want to stick around much longer, if at all...

Pretty sure I remember seeing him put something in his belt in Batman Begins. Also he keeps his guns on it in Dark Knight.

The pros outweigh the cons for Bale to come back. It would be better overall if I happened, but if not then there are other pros of having a new Bats. It's a win-win. So long as Nolan is overseeing it I have a lot of faith (and no I'm not a "Nolanite")

Although I'd love to see Bale's Batman become a corner stone of the new DC Cinematic Universe, and believe he'd have the ideal entrance via his prior cinematic outings, in my opinion the melding of both the Nolanverse and the new DC Cineverse would raise more issues than solve them. For instance:

1. With a perfectly resolved ending, why and how would WB and DC tear down the foundations of Batman's noble 'death' and passing of the torch to John 'Robin' Blake in TDKR without destroying that same legacy?

2. His vulnerability in the Nolanverse, although heavily realistic, is no match to his strength and resourceful skills from the comics. In my opinion, DC would need to stick to their own comic books to give Batman a chance of carrying the same gravitas and the heavy hitters in the League like Supes and Wonder Woman, especially when it comes to taking on supposed intergalactic threats that might arise in the Cinematic Universe (hopefully) such as the White Martians and Darkseid.

3. With the two universes melding together, the influence of superpowers on the Nolanverse and the grounded realism from the Nolanverse onto the DC Cineverse would completely tear down the walls of both respectively, primarily by the fact that Nolan Batman struggles with dogs, thugs and knives in general, so how would he even hope to take on threats with superhuman powers and abilities? Also, Nolanverse villains Bane and Ras Al Ghul would cause complications in the structure of the DC Cineverse with their realistic takes. I would much rather see the Lazarus Pit, eternal Ras Al Ghul and the Venom pumped Bane as opposed to Liam Neeson as a mercenary-turned-ninja crime lord and an averagely hench Bane who turns out to be Talia's dogs body for the entire film.

AND FINALLY..

4. As sound as it proves to be in concealing his dual identity, I physically will not endure watching another film with hearing aids trying to decipher Bale's odd grunts and snorts as Batman's 'voice'.

superotherside
superotherside - 3/9/2013, 7:10 AM
Personally I trust El Mayimbe's scoop, but I kinda hope WB scraps this idea. For a few reasons.

1. It's just a way to capitalize on making money. People are going to ask, "What's wrong with this?" A few things actually. You never tell a story when your biggest concentration is on bringing in the cash cow. Why? Because sooner or later, the story is going to suffer from it. On the other hand Marvel cares for its stories and they were just hopefully for Avengers to make "a little more than Iron Man 2." Thus it turned out a huge success because they concentrated on story.

2. Needs a new face. Bale is a great actor, in fact he brought in the silver age of CBMs. But now I think we might need someone else to take the cowl. If he does come back it WILL be met with mixed views from the audiance and the fans. Several of the fans would like a more comic accurate Batman, Bale does a fantastic Wayne but when we actually see Batman (which isn't that much in the films) he is very different than the comic version. For instance Bale's Batman has so much trouble with taking on Bane (which doesn't even have super strength), yet the comic Batman can take down the Bane with super strength while even fighting other foes at the same time. (If you haven't seen him do this you haven't read many comics.) I would like to see a Batman more like the comic version.

3. Several fans and non-fans want it. The Arkham games are extremely popular, and I have seen countless people ask why Batman on film isn't more like he is in the game. A lot agree they should do a film like the game (which is actually like the comics). Thus you have several people who would be very dissipointed if you brought the same version back.

That's all I got. Great article bro.
