Comic Book entertainment is the new thing. Movies, television, and cartoons are big money makers in most cases. Hollywood is constantly trying to adapt the latest property. DC Comics seems to have a mixed bag of success when it comes to their characters. Superman and Batman being their biggest.

The social media world we live in allows us all to have an opinion, but I feel like people spew hate just for the sake of being negative. Criticism is good, but hating simply to hate is counter productive. I decided to take a look at DC's offerings as a whole and offer up my own take. This all comes from a comment I read from a writer named Mark Millar, he is very credible, but I took this particular comment as a bit insulting. We'll get to that later. Let's start with Green Lantern.

Easily one of the biggest let downs for fans everywhere. Studios seem to not know when to leave their hands off of things. They have millions of dollars riding on the success of these films, but the suits are too stupid to realize when they've become too involved. The bottom line is, plot matters. Green Lantern was doomed from day one. Anyone could've seen that. Ryan Reynolds was the wrong choice and an all C.G.I. costume was a mistake. The movie had it's moments, but Reynolds never seems to take things seriously and that is the problem. Hal Jordan is not Van Wilder with a magic ring. The story was about 90 percent wrong and could never be salvaged. The setting should have stayed in space and the other Lanterns should've had a bigger role. The scene with Sinestro putting on the yellow ring for no reason was just stupid. The character isn't broken, he was just never given a proper try. You cannot ground a magic ring in realism. So don't bother trying.

Superman is easily they most well known hero. The best of them all. The boyscout. He is arguably the toughest to bring to any screen. Christopher Reeve is the iconic version of the Last Son Of Krypton, but let's be honest, Superman 3 and 4 are nothing short of crap. Bryan Singer was chosen to re launch the franchise and again I think story got in the way. Brandon Routh was not a bad Superman, but the story didn't help him. I liked the possibility of Clark having a son, but the lifting of the island of kryptonite was just stupid. That being said, the scene of him saving the plane is one of the greatest in any comic book film. Catching jets that fall from the sky is pure Superman. We all look forward to the next outing in this summer's Man Of Steel. I am worried, but hoping for the best. Superman isn't a dark and brooding character. Taking him dark is a HUGE mistake.

There is no polarizing series than Smallville. Fan boys are ridiculously hard on the show and are quick to blast it at every opportunity. Let me honestly say that I love this show. I was disappointed with the finale and truth be told the entire last season. Darkseid should never been attempted on television. Smallville was entertaining. It gave us ten years of Superman. It wasn't completely faithful to the comics, but it was close and had more good moments than bad. DC has had success with their other tent pole character. The Batman.

Batman had his rough spots. The Shumacher years were not kind, but Chis Nolan got it right didn't he? In a lot of ways, absolutely. The Dark Knight is the best comic book movie yet. Nolan captured the essence of who the character was, but some how managed to lose that in The Dark Knight Rises. Anybody cannot be Batman. Bruce Wayne is Batman. John "Robin" Blake is not. It's an OK movie, but Bruce would never just stop being Batman. He is driven. He is borderline psychotic. He is also too smart to lose all of his money. Alfred would never walk away either. Bruce is his life. Nolan got 2/3 of the trilogy dead on. DC will reboot Batman and please spare us yet another origin story. Even casual fans know how and why he becomes Batman. Give us a great story and move on.

Marvel hit a home run with The Avengers. They let Whedon do it the right way. It had everything an ensemble movie needed. Your move DC.

Mark Milllar said something to the extent of Justice League characters being dated. I couldn't disagree more. The story needs to be simple. A threat that is too big for one hero to handle alone. Marvel used it's individual heroes to launch The Avengers. DC needs to go the opposite direction in the case of Justice League. These are characters who are loved. JL Unlimited was one of the most entertaining cartoons in recent years. Martian Manhunter and Flash may be a bit more obscure, but so were Hawkeye and Black Widow. The Avengers introduced them to a whole new audience. I don't think they could carry their own movies, but it would be cool to see them along with Superman and Batman. It's also a great way to relaunch Green Lantern and Batman. The problem is two fold. The studios stray too far from the source material and fan boys are far too critical.

The Justice League isn't too dated. It just needs to be given the right story. Producers and studios, when it comes to comic book movies seem to forget that plot matters. Marvel has done a great job with the ensemble superhero flick. Your move DC. Don't mess it up.

Well written article, but I think your ideas are quite derivative and boring. Been there done that. It sounds to me like you either don´t know the characters or yourself don´t believe in them. If Martian Manhunter and Flash can´t hold solo movies, that basically means they aren´t good characters, therefore why would they be any better in a group. You sound like you lack as much beliefe in the as WB or Mark Millar.
I´m not saying they have to do solo movies, but until you prove to me or state why you don´t think they can hold their own movies don´t say that, cause having them as just quire singers in the background of what is essentially a worlds finest movie is not why I´d pay for justice league. I don´t want Singers X-Men all over again where wolverine is pretty much the only character. And comparing Flash to Hawkeye and bloody Black Widow is farely insulting. They are just to soldier characters, no powers, part of sheild, that is why they didn´t get their own movie. Its like Amanda Waller wouldn´t be expected to get her own movie before Justice league. Any way two thumbs down sorry.

By the way I still can´t believe anyone on this site really believed JL was coming out in 2015 and that Mark Millar had somehow read the script. I find it laughable, I was saying this well over a year ago that there was no way that actually happened.

Le sigh.
You are a well-intentioned contributor, and I respect that.

But you missed the ledge and landed in a pitfall, and now you are getting eaten alive by hungry crocodiles.

Don't make the mistake of saying that a character is not strong enough to hold his or her own solo movie. When you say something like that, you're telling me that you really only recognize Comic Book Movies and the like, and not any other genre where somewhat original characters are lighting up the silver screen without any villains or superpowers.

But the big BIG mistake, is saying that the Martian Manhunter can't hold his own movie. I freely admit that I am quite biased.

In what way is this possible? The guy is a shapeshifting telepath, the last of his race, isolated from his own superhero peers, and enjoys manipulating others.

You could make a movie about his John Jones persona and it could turn out awesome without even mentioning what happened to his fellow martians.

J'onn is Superman without the public adoration. He's Batman without the fanaticism. He's an X-Man without the small comforts of an extreme minority. He's a cynical fanboy with little desire to get involved. He's a genius who seeks information.

Let me just underline this for you.

His mind rebels at stagnation.

@KnightofSteel it'd be easier for Wonder Woman to reference Aquaman than it would be for Flash. Wonder Woman and Aquaman's origins both have ties to Ancient Greek mythology and the Ancient Greek Gods (Wonder Woman is tied to most of them while Aquaman's main tie is Neptune).

@FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin George Reeves was Superman in a TV show. The 'pilot' was a B-Movie, which doesn't really count as a movie as we'd view them now. It was less than an hour long, and never intended as either a money maker or even an important movie.

1st ....let me say this. Superman lifting a kryptonite island into space was about as stupid as He-Man throwing mountains in the old MOTU cartoons.

2nd... Manhunter and Flash are great characters, but launching them first will turn out about as successful as GL. Marvel could do the Hulk now successfully because people fell in love with the character again thanks to Avengers.

3rd....DC needs to work with proven fan bases. WW, Supes, and Batman have that. Studios DO NOT greenlight movies for fanboys. The ones that do have them turn out like Punisher:War Zone and Spirit of Vengence.

4th..... Curiosity and slight depression do not equate to a dark movie. Superman has always accepted the role of doing the right thing and putting others above his needs. It is the core of why he is best of them all.

5th .....Manhunter cannot carry his own movie. I would enjoy being proved wrong. Cumberbacth, while a great actor, is not the end all be all.

6th...... I am very familliar with the characters. Flash has a very convoluted world, but there are still peope in the general movie going audience that cannot distinguish him from Flash Gordon. Que the Queen song.

7th.... Thank you all for taking a few minutes to read my contribution and comment even if it is negative.

Er I wasn't really suggesting the Cumberbatch as J'onn, although that would be interesting. I was just comparing the Martian Manhunter to Sherlock, and I consider the new series to be definitive.

But before I jump down your throat, tell me please, why you think the Martian Manhunter couldn't support his own standalone movie - I am truly curious. It also helps me with my own fan fiction to know what people are expecting/not expecting.

Let me clarify....

When I say people, I mean casual moviegoers. Comic book fans will usually always check something out. Manhunter and Flash are great characters, but they are not household names. Flash might be remembered and the Martian was a supporting character on Smallville. I liked the show, but it didn't do him justice.

In order for these movies to work, they need to appeal to more than the core fan. These movies can't simply be good. Dredd was good, but he wasn't household name enough to draw the casual moviegoer. Combined with the fact that Sci Fi can scare away a certain portion of the audience, that is why I don't believe the Martian can carry his own.

DC has great characters beyond Superman and Batman. I believe a JL movie would open these characters up to a broader audience and give DC a healthier stable of movie heroes.

I thought as much.
You're grouping everyone who isn't Batman and Superman into a broad genre of straight-to-dvd movies who only fans will pick up. In fact, you're lumping the entire Sci Fi genre in with that.

Think about it. How many action movies come out every year that feature a semi-original character who isn't really adapted from a book, likely features some familiar actor, and makes at least a modest income at the box office? Quite a few in fact.

It's all about the visual appeal, the style, and which aspect they choose to be marketable.

There are plenty of movies that feature characters who no one knows about, who haven't appeared in a book, comic, cartoon, video game - and people will still go see them. Because they look interesting. You're getting lost in the CBM genre.

@tainted87.Demas -
The answer to your question about Dredd is simple. One, g-rated, two, not part of an event. WW; Flash, and Martian Manhunter can´t hold movies by themselves now, why? Because they either have a poor public image (WW) or they aren´t household names as you´ve said. But if you market their movies as part of an eventual event i.e. The Justice League movie, and they´re good. Moviegoers will come flooding. In the process you change the image in their head of that character. Watchmen, Dredd and even Kick ass prove Comic Books are still perceived as if they are for children. But they are now cult classics. I think Kick Ass and Sin City have gone about things the right way. To sell those kinds of movies to make a modest profit you need name stars and name director. Thats why watchmen failed and why Dredd failed. It was a good enough script to get a name director involved and big name stars to play some of the roles. Watchmen had the right director, but needed a few stars. Now sequels for Sin City and Kick ass have been greenlit on the basis of cult status. But they are lucky they made a modest profit and that was because they had stars involved. simple.

By the way Iron Man wasn´t a household name.

Correct aresww3 he wasn't, but Robert Downey Jr was. He has certainly had his fair share of headlines for abuse. People love a good comeback story.

Manhunter is a character I would compare to the Hulk. The first attempt was not good. It left a pretty bad taste in peoples mouths. Marvel tried again with the right actor, Norton, but it still didn't blow people away. Enter the Avengers and people fell in love with the character again.

I personally don't like the fact that b list characters fail or go straight to dvd, but that's what Hollywood is about these days. It is a world where 300 million can still be considered a failure. Studios will not take chances on things that don't have a broad appeal.

I would wager the majority of moviegoers had no idea that Sin City was a graphic novel. They went cause it was the cool thing to see at the time and the cast was solid.

I'll add a really lame phrase, but one that is true...don't hate the player, hate the game.

Remember just because you recognize a character doesn't mean you know the origin. The general audience doesn't know Wonder Woman and Flash's origin.
