While Superman has been spotted on various pieces of merchandise for Justice League, there's been no sign of the Man of Steel in trailers for the movie. As a result, we have no idea when and where in that he will make his return but a description for a Funko Pop figure may very well go some way in explaining both those points (but not the method of how he actually comes back, unfortunately).
As you can see below, it appears as if Superman will make his return at a pivotal point in Justice League and that at least some of the action is going to be set in Venezuela rather than Metropolis or Gotham City. That obviously gives Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon the chance to destroy somewhere without it being a place that's important to future DC Comics movies. It's also probably less populated than those!
"The Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Flash figures are barely holding their own against invading Parademons and an axe-wielding Steppenwolf. If only Superman — in Funko figure form — was here… LOOK! UP IN THE SKY! Is that…is that Superman?? IT IS! It’s the Superman Justice League Movie Funko Pop Vinyl Figure and it resurrected itself moments before Steppenwolf skewered Wonder Woman with a hefty chunk of Venezuela!"
Now, it's important to note that this could be inaccurate or flat out wrong but that's some very specific information in there and it does all make sense based on past rumour and general speculation.
