JUSTICE LEAGUE Producer Charles Roven Admits That Overseeing DC Films Is Too Much For One Person

There was a time when Charles Roven was overseeing pretty much every single movie in the DC Films Universe but he's now admitted that producing the entire slate is too big a job for just one person...

Charles Roven has been part of the DC Films Universe from the start but after movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad underperformed, his role was scaled back by Warner Bros. and limited to just the projects he'd already been assigned to. That may or may not have always been the plan or dissatisfaction on the studio's part in regards to his work but it still came as a shock.

Now, in a new Q&A session, Roven has weighed in on his changing role in the DC Films Universe and how it may, in fact, be for the best that he's no longer having to oversee the entire slate for the studio.

"I think my role for the moment is to focus on those sequels but, you know, a couple of years ago, I was a producer on all of the Justice League movies," Roven explained to Deadline, "and their individual heroes movies, but it became very clear that in order to be a producer on those movies in the timeline that Warner Bros. wanted, it was way too big a job for one producer to oversee."

Regardless of how accurate Roven's explanation is, it's good that there are actually more cooks in the kitchen now because it's clear that some fresh perspectives may be required if these DC movies are going to succeed moving forward. What do you think? As always, let us know your thoughts below.

Tell that to Kevin Feige, in charge of well made and coherent films.

@SimplyAz - Feige didn't do it on his own. He needed Disney.

@Griela - Roven has warner bros?

@Griela -

Of course he has support but I'm sure that Roven wasn't literally sat on his own trying to figure it out.

It can be hard when you don't have a plan.

@Trumpool - The visionary director Zack Snyder had a plan for the DCEU, which was well-received by many fans although it didn't manage to achieve Marvel megabucks overnight (but neither did Marvel manage to achieve their current level of critical acclaim and commercial success with their first few films). The fault lies with the Warner Bros. executives and their greed.

I think that Batman v Superman is a great film. A masterpiece of cinema that touches upon deep philosophical themes, while reinventing DC's superheroes for our troubled times (as did Snyder's previous masterwork, Man of Steel). However, it's clear that BvS was a divisive movie, and especially with the movie reviewers more than the harcore DC comics fans.

Imagine if the Warner Bros. people had allowed Zack Snyder to create a true sequel to Man of Steel, establishing Henry Cavill's Superman as the icon of hope that he was meant to have become, at the finale of his character's first outing. BvS would have made a lot more sense if we'd actually see Superman play the role of an ideal hero that humanity strives to emulate, during an entire movie featuring only that character. MoS was his origin story, so we really needed more time with Zack's Superman!

Anyway despite the WB executives' meddling, Zack Snyder and his artistic collaborators still managed to produce two thrilling and thought-provoking stories, which are beloved by many fans. See the links below for the proof of this fact!

@gorgoneion - you lost me at "visionary director" and "masterpiece of cinema"

@IctyoSapien - I considered toning down my praise of Snyder's work to avoid being ridiculed (even though I realise that you're not saying anything mean or cruel), but why should I have to do that? I really do believe that Man of Steel and Batman v Superman are masterpieces of cinema! :-) There is room in this world for a plurality of opinions about art in film.

@IctyoSapien - Calling Batman v Superman a 'masterpiece of cinema' is akin to calling Hitler a War hero.

@IctyoSapien - It's more like saying that Hans Zimmer is the new John Williams! Everybody loves Hans Zimmer, right? :-D You know, the guy who composed the incredible musical score for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman!

You really set yourself up with that one, friend! :-D

@gorgoneion - Hanz Zimmer and Danny Elfman are amazing composers! Still not every movie with soundtracks by them is good. (Also fogetting Junkie XL?)
gorgoneion
gorgoneion - 1/22/2018, 6:16 AM
@IctyoSapien - I love what Zimmer and Junkie XL did for Batman v Superman, but I don't personally think that Junkie XL has attained the status of John Williams for his work on movie scores. Not yet at least :-P

By the way, even little babies love the work of Hans Zimmer and Zack Snyder! :-)

@gorgoneion - The two films obviously weren't everyone's cup of tea, but that would have the case no matter what Superman film we got. I enjoyed the first two Christopher films, but not enough to watch them multiple times. I LOVE "Man of Steel", own it on 3-D Blu-ray, and have seen it multiple times. My best friend and also one of my brothers LOVE this film.

Many people love character arcs and realistic human portrayals of characters and the "other" Superman was hard to relate to and too corny for many people. "Man of Steel" gave many people things to "sink their mental teeth into", which is more fun.

@Ragnarocknroll - Oh, great. The infamous "Hitler" comparison. When you don't have any solid arguments, bring up Hitler. Many politicians do this during their campaigns. Congratulations! You've stooped very low now.
