BLACK PANTHER Director Ryan Coogler Didn't Want To Kill Off This Particular Character

For those who have seen Black Panther, you would know that the film axed off quite a few characters. However, it was Ulysses Klaw that was special to director Ryan Coogler. Check out what he says.

It really wasn't teased much in the trailers, but Black Panther technically had two villains in their story. We all know how great of a job Michael B. Jordan portrayed Erik Killmonger, but he wasn't alone. In addition to the bad guy roster was Ulysses Klaw. He was played by Andy Serkis, who also did a fantastic job in the role.

Director Ryan Coogler opens up on the matter, and he's said this to The Toronto Sun.

“I like Klaw. I was bugged by having to do that. It’s tough when you have to kill characters off and I really did love that character.”

He continued on to say, "I love Andy, he’s a lovely person,” Coogler exclaims, “But again, it’s one of those things where when you’ve got so many people in a movie, some of them have to go. Klaw in this movie, he’s just having a good time. Every scene he’s in, he’s walking in like it’s the best day of his life. He’s got a swagger to him that’s interesting and for me it was cool to see Andy act like that. It was a real pleasure.”

It's a shame he had to bite the dust. For the little screen time he had, Klaw was definitely a formidable foe. He was actually first introduced back in 2015, through Avengers: Age of Ultron. So coming back for Black Panther was a nice treat, without a doubt. However, will he come back?

Most likely, not a chance. His story has been wrapped up. Although, what do you think of Klaw's demise?

Should he have stuck around for future films? Leave your thoughts down below.

Really liked Klaue, a really fun character. Shame he had to go.

His death was unexpected, and unnecessary. Here's hoping that they bring him back in the future. My two cents...

Klaw was with the old Black Panther stories or this black Panthers fathers era being BP. Just seems like killing him off is a way to expand BP going forward in the MCU

Superhero flicks kill far too many of the major villains, some of them iconic such as the Joker going back as far as Batman ‘89.

Bring him back via the snap. His swagger and gleeful demeanour would be fun watch bounce off Chadwick's stoic and serious nature as T'Challa.

You think if the leaked plot is accurate captain marvel would be the one that'd have to use the new gauntlet?

@GeoAKLeo - That's not the leaked plot I read, this one had the Hulk wielding the gauntlet. At this point all these "leaked plots" amount to nothing less than speculation.

@kaethar - ah, so I guess there are a couple floating around

Possible *spoiler* warning

They go through a parallel time line gathering infinity stones and a gauntlet while tweaking minor things in the time line, the living tribunal and eon are also supposedly in it.. Thats mostly been on reddit

I didn't mind the idea of his death at all, love Serkis. His portrayal was awesome and would have loved to see him more down the line, being the #1 villain.

But that was my biggest gripe with the film, really. HOW he went out, was a little lazy and fast to me.

He was enjoyable, but I can't say I was upset he died.

At worst, I was sad he never got to get his costume from the comics.

Could've just incapacitated him and brought him to Wakanda for imprisonment.
Would've changed nothing else about what followed.

@BritishMonkey - exactly how I feel

Coogler did a fantastic job with this film, but I don't get his comments about "having" to kill Klaue off. He easily could've had Killmonger just bring him in alive, as a prisoner. In some ways, it would be more impressive for Killmonger to bring him in alive. It would be he captured him instead of potentially just cheap shot killing him. Easily my biggest gripe with an otherwise stellar movie.

@ThouBear8 - The argument could be that killing Klaw would be the only way for Killmonger to get W'Kabi's support, alternatively that if they imprison him they'd need to do follow-ups on that (they can't just drop that storyline in the middle of the movie) - and that would have thrown of the pace of the film.

@kaethar - yeah I get what you're saying. It's not like what happened didn't make sense or anything like that. I just wish we could've had more of Klaue. You're probably right about the reasoning tho

Killing off Klaue was probably the only thing I absolutely hated about Black Panther. How they waste a character which is probably Black Panther's biggest enemy in the books, and who had a great actor playing him and very well played by Serkis too... I do not know. Klaue should have been the main villain in the sequel and had a Joker in The Dark Knight vibe to him, because I honestly think it could have been at that level.

Why hire a motion capture specialist to play a guy who would have eventually been made of solid sound only to kill him off before we get to see how that would have looked in the MCU?

@ChiliConCarney - Don’t get me wrong, Andy’s a great actor but we all know where his bread is buttered...
