Netflix Is In Active Discussions With Disney To Keep MARVEL and STAR WARS Films Past 2019

Disney seems to be easing up on taking all of their content off of Netflix, as a new report states the two companies are in active talks to keep Marvel and Star Wars films on the streaming giant.

Last week it was reported that Disney would end their contact with Netflix and take all content to their own streaming services. That services is slated to hit in 2019, and would encompass all of Disney's entertainment library, with the exception of the Marvel Netflix shows.

A recent report in Reuters is saying that Disney seems to have had a change of heart when it comes to two of their most lucrative franchises. Disney is currently in negotiations with Netflix to keep all Marvel and Star Wars related content on the streaming services past 2019.

Disney CEO, Bob Iger, initially said he didn't know what would  happen with the two franchises since Disney would be ending their contract with Netflix. However, Netflix Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, said that the talks to keep Marvel and Star Wars in their library after the 2019 cut-off date are currently on-going. Disney had no comment on the matter, but Sarandos believes that the Disney streaming service will be, "complimentary" to Netflix.

What's the betting that Disney just says [frick] it and buys Netflix?

@IronDean2099 - Seeing how much money disney has, that is a possibility. What more likely is, is that disney is gonna start its own streaming service (if they already havent)

@IronDean2099 - I'm pretty sure it has already been discussed between the companies, but if they do they would also be buying into their billion dollar debt as well. So maybe they are weighing the possibility that Netflix can have a good profit margin within the next 5 to 10 years.

@malsemarcel - They said they're starting one, but I think it would be more beneficial to buy Netflix, which is a very well established brand, and people will be reluctant to subscribe to yet another service. It would probably be cheaper to buy Netflix than it would be to establish their own. You're looking at at least five years of development and marketing before it's anywhere near Netflix.

@smgmayhem - Disney would be rescuing Netflix from it's own financial problems. It's a win/win.

@IronDean2099 - I think Disney has better turnaround re-releasing older content every so many years from Digital and Blu-Ray mediums honestly. It would be a hard market to try and squeeze into when there are already many other streaming services reigning at the top of the food chain.

@IronDean2099 - I agree and maybe they are wising up to the fact that not that many people are willing to subscribe to another streaming platform when there are already various others doing it and for most likely cheaper monthly payments. If they do buy them though I am worried that the monthly prices may go up seeing as they would want to see that profit in less than 10 years time to pay off the investment.

@smgmayhem - I think that the amount of extra content we would get on Netflix after a Disney buyout would justify an increase in subscription fee. I would happily pay an extra 50% if I could watch any of the Disney animated or live action features,, plus any of the Marvel and Star Wars stuff that isn't already on there.

@IronDean2099 - Yeah that makes sense in the long run.

Netflix just needs to establish a Marvel/Disney category on the Netflix UI and rotate 'x' number of titles in and out every month. Not that hard to coexist.

What if they do something like making Disney's Streaming service an add on to Netflix itself? Like, you have to pay a little bit more to your Netflix account to access all content from Disney. I'd like that.

I hope they collaborate. I enjoy it when groups come together for a singular purpose with a singular goal.

@AvisQuinn - Very unlikely. Disney just spent somewhere around 150 million on a company that provides tech for streaming. That sounds rather committed to me.

@JDL - Good for them. If they want to spend all that money on a proprietary tech company so they can compete in this world where it seems every NEEDS to have some kind of subscription streaming service, then that's fine. Competition is just as good as collaboration. I'm more so thinking about myself and my wallet, and already saying that I'm not going to pay the subscription price for the service. I got rid of my cable service because I never used it. Then, I added Netflix, Hulu, and my roommate added Amazon. Besides, I'm not big into Disney movies anyway, and I run out and buy the special gold and titanium, super ultra mega ultimate deluxe limited edition of every Marvel film anyway. I won't be missing out on anything.

If Marvel and Star Wars movies are all on Netflix , Disney will not be able to sell any streaming service on their own because those 2 are what people will want the most .

Wonder if there's something on paper which avoids a full MCU/NFU universes to be really intertwined.

Netflix just signed Shonda Rhimes to a deal. Disney would be smart to stick with Netflix to make everything a one stop shop.

You know, I realize that it's a huge company and they have all sorts of perks and all, but really - FU*K DISNEY. God I hate how the big companies force their weight around and try to rule the world. And Disney might is right up there toward the top (hello Monsanto).

Maybe it's a UK thing? But I can't remember the last time I saw any Star Wars movies on Netflix?

To be honest I liked Netflix but now it seems to only fill up on failed movies and the occasional good tv show.
