JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Joe Manganiello Says He Was Offered A Marvel Role, But Wants Something More "Substantive"

Zack Snyder's Justice League star Joe Manganiello has revealed that he was offered a Marvel part a few years ago, but ultimately turned it down because he's hoping to take on a larger superhero movie role.

Joe Manganiello is clearly keen to reprise the role of Deathstroke in the DC Extended Universe after playing the character in Zack Snyder's Justice League, but what about the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Talking at Justice Con, the actor was asked if he'd be open to reprising the role of Flash Thompson in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it was then he dropped a bombshell.

"I think it depends on what it consists of," the actor started. "With Sony doing Sinister Six and putting together their mega-verse, and also with the X-Men coming over to Disney, the possibility of Secret Wars surfacing at some point in the future, I just think there are so many amazing characters in Marvel...and I will say that I was actually offered a part in a Marvel film a few years ago."

Unfortunately, Manganiello didn't mention the movie, and declined to reveal the character's name because it could step on the toes of the person who was ultimately cast.

"I know it's in vogue for people to dig up their screen test footage for parts they didn't get...I've never been a fan of that. I grew up on Marvel comics, so if I was going to join the universe, I really want it to be the right role. And I think sometimes you have to hold out for that right one," he continued. "So, a little cameo as Flash Thompson? I don't know. I'd rather do something more substantive. Somebody that can stick around for a while, or at least have a really great role in one of the movies."

It sounds like the Marvel role he was offered was a relatively minor one, and it now remains to be seen whether Kevin Feige has any interest in giving Manganiello something bigger (the actor will probably need to move on from his hopes for more Deathstroke in the DCEU if that's going to happen).

Who do you think Manganiello could play in the MCU?

He seems to know his stuff.

I'm with him on this, it would serve him well to wait for something more substantive and not just any small villain role.

@CyberNigerian - I agree! Especially after Marvel wasted talents such as Djimon Hounsou and Adewale Akinnuoye.

@word1one - yes. He wouldn’t have turned down Wolverine. Hell, Betty White wouldn’t have turned down Wolverine.

Would be on the taller side, but he would be a decent Wolverine, although only 2 inches taller than jackman

@dracula - Agreed, he did play a werewolf before so the snarling aggressive thing comes naturally to him.

Really all the DC roles i could see him in have been taken.

Eh if he shows up as deathstroke, thats fine but seriously doubt it will happen, no matter how often he brings it up

I'm guessing Crossbones.

[frick], if they ever did Agent Venom from the Raimi-verse he'd be perfect. Mix a bit of the Deathstroke vibes with Venom?

Genuinely would be a great fit.

For some reason I always randomly imagined Joe or The Rock as a throwaway team member of STRIKE in Cap 2. Like, maybe Rumlow's right-hand bruiser to Cap and co.

Even though this is exactly the type of role Joe says he doesn't want lol.

As a new character he'd be fine as kraven I think, at least phisically, but it'd be great if they cast him as agent venom in the venom universe or in the mcu thanks to the introduction of the multiverse.

Yeah can't blame the guy, i'd do the same.
Giancarlo Esposito did the same thing and is waiting for the right role.

@Doomsday8888 - Ginacarlo Esposito would be great for the Leader if HULK was taken seriously.

@tripttwe - they already have Tim Blake Nelson, they should bring him back
tripttwe
tripttwe - 4/21/2021, 7:46 AM
@NathanielX - they should. 13 years ago. MARVEL needs this Universal thing to go away, or at least come to an agreement where they both benefit. HULK is too iconic to sit back like this while we watch B & C level characters thrive.

He can’t act, but be ambitious I guess

Sorry, not to bust his balls, but more substantive roles usually go to better actors. His acting is on par with Scott Adkins without the added bonus of the martial arts skills.
