Anticipation for the Men in Black sequel/reboot has been stagnant as of late, but with a release in the upcoming weeks, Sony is hoping to change that. With the star power and undeniable chemistry of Thor: Ragnorok's Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth, the studio is banking on a box office success.

This new look at the film mixes the old and the new, throwing in franchise alum Emma Thompson alongside series newcomers Hemsworth and Thompson. The biggest surprise here? Frank the Pug, who looks to be returning from the original slew of films.

Way to soon for re-boot. I have no interest in this movie. I see FLOP on the horizen.

movies like this seem to start & stop after the initial idea of race / gender-swapping familiar leads.

that's not a bad jumping off point as it can be a fresh coat of paint on a washed up franchise, but they never seem to create anything interesting after that.

that's exactly what's wrong with our politics & culture today: it's based around appearances. things don't have to *be* different so long as they *look* different. lazy thinking.

"race / gender-swapping familiar leads"
"that's not a bad jumping off point"

It is entirely a bad jumping off point - built on the racist/sexist ideology that people can only care about people who are the same race/sex as they are. It always intensifies the feeling that what you are watching is leeching off the original product rather than doing something original. It gives you expectations for a film before you know anything else about it.

If it is an original film then it'll be accused of leeching off the original and manipulating the audience into thinking it will be a continuation. If it's a remake then it'll recieve backlash for any scenes or anything that is repeated from the original because chances are it'll be done poorly.

It has become a gimmick done to simply latch onto an established property - it's definitely a 'bad jumping off point'

sounds like you're projecting.

none of that matters if the creators are sincere about making the new characters, well... actual characters.

i'm not saying it isn't often done cynically but it's no less valid of a creative direction than changing the tone or setting of an established franchise so long as it's treated like a decision that is affecting all of the creative decisions moving forward.

Just going by the trailer it just looks like Thor and Valkyrie in suits fighting aliens. Even Hemsworth's attempt at an English accent sounds exactly like Thor.
