Deadline is reporting that F. Gary Gray is Sony Pictures' top choice to take the helm of their upcoming Men in Black reboot. The two sides are currently in the midst of negotiating a deal.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are not expected to reprise their original roles in any capacity as Sony intends to launch an entirely new franchise with the property. However, while they won't return, their roles will also not be recast with the new spinoff film following two completely new agents - one of whom is expected to be female.

A production start date remains TBD, but Sony has already booked a May 17, 2019 release date, so expect filming to begin this summer or early this fall, at the latest.

Iron Man scribes Matt Holloway and Art Marcum turned in the most recent draft of the film's script. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing while Steven Spielberg will serve as an executive producer.

Gary is best known for directing Fate of the Furious, which ultimately finished as the third-highest grossing film of 2017, and for directing the critically acclaimed N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton.

@ODanil - There is no reason we should not get one of these every 2 or 3 years forever.
