THE MARTIAN Blu-ray/DVD Special Features Revealed; Is An Extended Cut On Its Way?

20th Century Fox's The Martian was easily one of the best films of the year, winning over both critics and fans alike. The Ridley Scott-directed film also made quite a dent at the worldwide box office, collecting over $573 million on a budget of $108 million and, after earning three Golden Globe nominations on Friday, is also generating quite a bit of Oscar buzz.

Earlier this month, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that the critically acclaimed film would arrive on Digital HD December 22 & on Blu-ray/DVD on January 12. The full list of special features have been released featuring a bunch of cool bonus content. Check out the full list below.

As for the rumored extended cut, which Scott previously stated would be included on the film's Blu-ray, it seems to be oddly missing from this initial release. It's unclear whether the extended cut was scrapped or is being held back in case of a potential future re-release similar to X-Men: Days of Future Past - The Rogue Cut, but it's surely a disappointing development for fans hoping to see more of Mark Watney's mad botany skills. In case you weren't aware, the extended cut was said to include over twenty minutes of new footage making the film run around 2 hours and 45 minutes.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

Simply put, one of best movies I've seen all year. Interstellar was great in its own way, but The Martian does a better job of keeping you thoroughly entertained.

Oh yes I WILL be buying that Blu-ray.

Wow, @grif said something positive? Someone should write an article about that! Totally in agreement, I'll be picking this up as well. Not as good as the book, but nothing ever is.

Matt Damon's character went through all of that........just to come home and die of the super cosmic cancer he probably has from all of the exposure. Ah, hope!
