Clark Gregg On Coulson's Return In AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D

Without giving too much away, the actor discusses Phil Coulson's return from the dead (and yes, he WAS dead!) for the upcoming Marvel tv series, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Check out the video interview with Perri Nemiroff after the jump.

In the following interview, Gregg confirms that the original plan was always to kill off Agent Coulson in The Avengers. He was sad to see the character go, but felt that his death had meaning and was happy with the way he checked out. Because of this he was hesitant at first about bringing Coulson back for the S.H.I.E.L.D tv show, until he talked to Joss Whedon about it and saw how it could make sense. He also talks about how Coulsdon might have changed since his "resurrection", and whether his pals in The Avengers who mourned his passing will be made aware that he's back.

Will you be glad to see Coulson back? Or do you think he was better off left dead? Sound off below.

Apparently people can escape death now either that his death was staged(highly unlikely) unless he was "inhuman"

the only characters that need ressuruction are Cyclops, jean grey and professor x. Coulson should stay dead forever, sure we love him but he is not important.

I really really can't wait to see how this pans out and to see just how pissed everyone gets at Fury because we all know he lied and did some underhanded shit to pass this off. I'm really really interested to see Stark's reaction because he was the "closest" to Coulson

How do I get rid of these Spring Board Ads. I really love this site but every time a clip or trailer is released I find myself leaving this site to find a non Pre-Aded Clip/Trailer. Its just faster. Im at the end of my rope.

brazilianbatman@ Either way it goes they were going to have to come together to kick Loki's ass weather Coulson died or not. Actually them banding together over a fake death presents more opportunities from drama and storytelling so yes I am interested in seeing that. Its happening weather you like it or not so get over it.

I can't believe you guys are still persisting with the whole "Fury lied" thing when Whedon already said Coulson really DID die, and he's simply being resurrected. Not that he didn't die. He DID die.

Wait, so Marvel kills off a character and then brings them back to life and so many of you are shocked?

Come on...

I still maintain that Marvel Studios is not at all the same animal as Marvel Comics.

Comics are like Soap Operas, where you have to constantly be coming up with new stories, new twists, etc, and you have to have so many a year so the writers are going to get way out there as far as plots etc. And every now and then, they resurrect people because they want to get back to status quo.

Movies, as most people are probably aware, are totally different. You don't need to resurrect characters constantly when you're only telling three stories, maybe four. The time to tell a story is far more precious.

So yeah, it's weird to do it. If it works and makes sense, then I'll go with it. I enjoyed the character, and have always been interesting in this show.

I'm happy to know he didn't just jump in despite his love for the character. It's good that he put the story first, before his desire to return. A lot of respect for Clark Gregg

Hulk2008@ Because Black Widow is a really great character and there aren't enough representations of strong females on television especially when it comes to the whole live action comic book adaptations.

@ruadh Hey ya I totally get your point, to kill a character in ongoing comics is basically like taking merchandise off your store shelves and burning it. I get it, just saying that Marvel Characters are so strong that it is tough to kill them off, even in movies. Its so very final and with the creation of a universe you want to include as many as possible.

I can get behind that. We just found out yesterday that our new baby on the way is a girl, and of course now I'm thinking about the alternatives to Barbie dolls I can get her into. REALLY wish there was more stuff like Black Widow available for little girls. I guess all I can do is Batgirl and Brave...

Yeah, that's true...it just really seemed like he completely served his purpose. I enjoyed his scenes more with each film, and Avengers just really felt like the high water mark for the character. I'm really into resolution too. I like stories that have a conclusion, and it felt like Coulson's had a very satisfying one.

On that note, I'm seriously hoping the movie version of Iron Man gets a solid conclusion, with RDJ still in the role. I don't need it to be like James Bond. It's one thing I really appreciate about the Dark Knight movies, and I'm sorry to bring up Nolan in a Marvel article...but I've actually still yet to see DKR. But that it's a finite story is really appealing for someone like me.

So, I'm hoping that with Phase 3, the focus shifts to some of the other heroes you're probably referring to, with the Phase 1 ones dropping back to supporting.

@JatevinM,

Of course that's true. And I told my son he's gotta help me out and be ready to share his figures when she's big enough. But also I want to get her a Princess Leia doll, but of course that means she's also gotta have Han Solo...
