BOX OFFICE: Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT Finale Crosses $800 Million

BOX OFFICE: Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT Finale Crosses $800 Million

Only one 2014 film has made more money than The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies and that would be Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction. Though, I'm sure Peter Jackson doesn't mind as his film has crossed $800M this weekend.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies added $9.8 million at the overseas box office this weekend. Its international total now stands at $558 million and its global total is $803.1 million. The second highest grossing film of 2014 still has some fight left in but won't catch Michael Bay's billion dollar monster Transformers: Age Of Extinction. I'm sure director Peter Jackson is thrilled his final installment in the Middle-earth trilogy has crossed $800 million benchmark, but it is underperforming the two previous films in the series.  2013's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug earned $960.4 million and 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey grossed over a billion.

For those of you interested in the domestic box office, American Sniper, which stars Bradley Cooper ("Guardians Of The Galaxy"), smoked the competition with $88 million and Blackhat, which stars Chris Hemsworth ("Avengers: Age Of Ultron"), couldn't even crack the top ten in its debut weekend. Check out the rest of the U.S. box office below.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Still not sure which one I like less - this or DOS. There are strong arguments for both of them...

Out of all three Hobbit films, the one I like best is the Fellowship of the Two Kings. That one was easily the best.

Marvel stars are having a hard time translating their success outside their CBM franchises. Except Scarlet Johansson. Girl made a killing with Lucy, even if the movie was bad. And to be fair to Chris Evans, I feel like he's trying to focus more on auteur filmmaking. RDJ fumbled with The Judge. Now Chris H. Though I'm very much looking forward to In the Heart of the Sea.
And Tom Hiddleston's biggest movies have yet to come out. Most notably Crimson Peak and Kong : Skull Island.
It's like, if you don't have a franchise, it's really really hard to bring in the dough. The era of stars has come and gone.

@P862010 - four time oscar nominee ? I thought it was three time. Maybe you're counting his producing role ?

EDIT : You're absolutely right. The fourth comes in because American Sniper was nominated for best picture, and he's coproducing.

Did you guys know that initially it was Chris Pratt who was set to star as Chris Kyle (and Cooper would only produce) ?

Paddington isn't doing too bad, when you consider it has made over $122m outside of North America.

"The Battle Of The Five Armies was easily the best film in The Hobbit trilogy."

If you are into mindless action without sufficent build-up and tension, with enemies who can be killed by a hobbit throwing a rock at their face. With an over-abundance of akward CGI, silly gravity defying Legolas and video game style boss fights where the villain defeats themselves via their own stupidity combined with an ending that leaves you questioning what the heck happened to the Lonely Mountain after.

Plus, the constant deus ex machina moments via Gandalf or the Eagles. I dont care whether it happened in the book, it always has and always will be a massive cop-out. Even in a more child-orientated book like The Hobbit, the constant use of deus ex machina was just lazy writing.

Raise your hand if you thought Blackhat was gonna be anything other than shit.
It should have gone straight to dvd or vod.

Peter Jackson would care about everyone's hate for these movies, but he's too busy rolling the the cash that he made from them.

I said it once and I'll say it again it was better than the second, the only thing that made desolation of smaug bearable was smaug, the battle of the five armies left alot of unanswered questions like who became the new king under the mountain, what became of evangeline Lily's character, whatever became of the brown wizard, whatever became of the dwarves, whatever became of the humans of the town, did they get their good and rebuild, why did gandalf not go into the shire, where did he wonder off to all thosse years, are we to assume that be made visits through out the years cause frodo knew him in fellowship of the ring, hmmmmm so many questions Peter Jackson

Damn shame about Blackhat, it looked pretty meh but it sucks it bombed this hard. Sorry Chris, better stick with the Avengers because without that man... you're not looking so hot.

I liked both series, but felt that both were heavily drawn out and I'm glad it's over. LotR could have easily been two movies or three much shorter movies and The Hobbit definitely should have only been two movies.
