Buyers Already Wary of The Governator

Doubts about the success of Arnold Schwarzenegger's upcoming comic book/cartoon series are already in abundance, especially with the TV executives. Hit the jump to hear executives' take on the trailer and other things...

From The Hollywood Reporter:

In private conversations, exec after exec expressed doubts about the viability of a 2D traditional cartoon aimed at young kids from the man behind The Terminator and Total Recall. “I was hoping he’d be back with an action series or another film — that’s what the market wants,” one veteran European buyer says. “But a cartoon? That’s a hard sell, especially since it’s not even in 3D.”

The Governator trailer Schwarzenegger screened in Cannes did little to reassure buyers. “It was action, action, action and nothing we haven’t seen before,” says Claude Schmit, head of Super RTL, Europe’s top children’s channel. “It looked like a lot of stuff out there at the moment. Lego, Hasbro, Playmobile — they’re all producing cartoon series now, and all of them are very action-heavy. There’s a bit of a glut of this stuff.”

Schmit echoes many buyers in saying Super RTL is taking a wait-and-see approach to Governator: “We want to see scripts before we commit,” he says. “They said it was going to be funny and family-friendly, but that’s not what they showed.”

Comic book great Stan Lee of Spider-Man and X-Men fame is helping write the scripts, and Andy Heyward’s cartoon credits include global hits Inspector Gadget and G.I. Joe. India media giant Tata is on board to bankroll the production, but whether it reaches mass audiences is another matter.

“They’ll get it made, no doubt, but will they be able to sell it?” one American sales exec asks. “This has been an amazing marketing blitz. This project has been reported more widely than any series I’ve ever seen. But they’ve set the bar very high. Now they have to deliver.”

The Governator makes his way onto your TV next year, with a 3D movie hitting theaters in 2013.

I would rather see him as a bad guy with Bruce Willis in The Expendables 2!:)

Who wouldnt want to see him face Stallone in the big screen after all these years!

I think thats what the fans wanna see and not this... THING?!

I definately think bringing him in as a villain for the Expendables would be a great idea.. They portrayed him as an arrogant ass, so the seeds are planted..Now it's a matter of hoping they'll grow!

ZZzzzz...Maybe in the Expendables II they should combine Arnold's character with something similar to the Governator that would be intersting. Arnold some power crazy mad man bent on becoming president and he's using his team of assassins and some high tech weaponry to do it. IDK just a thought.

I want to see arnold come back for another terminator movie, whether they have to cgi him to look younger or make him completely animated, as long as he has some part in the movie i'm happy

The lamest part of all is his title. If he'd come up with something original rather than something that was used to slander him as a bad Governor then perhaps he can market himself. The fact is he's been Governor since before small kids were even born (like my 6 year old) and they don't know who he even is as they haven't seen R rated his Terminator or Predator films. He's not marketable to the audience he's targeting.

It's just super lame!

Really would have liked to see him portray King Conan rather than a reboot of that franchise.

The show looks like fun, but I think in the end it won't last long. It's no secret people want Arnie to return to movies, so it might deliberately not do well. I know a few people that already said they won't watch it 'cause they prefer to see a new film with him in it rather than a kids cartoon starring his voice. I love 80's and 90's cartoons, but it just isn't the same anymore. Kids today will probably laugh at a show like this. Sad but probably true.

@batfreak-cool avatar dude! As far as this marketing blitz goes, it reminds me big time of the marketing blitz used to promote "The Last Action Hero" which, in a sense, was the exact same thing, only in live action form. They took Arnie's status as an action hero and made fun of it. And we all know how well that did at the box office. I personally enjoyed the hell out of it because I took it for what it was, pure escapist entertainment, but also realized they were making fun of Arnie. Same with this here. He's making fun of himself. Do I think it'll last, hell no! I agree with most people on here in regards to The Governator, it looks pretty lame and I don't think the target audience will even get it. The animation, in my opinion, doesn't look bad, hell, it even LOOKS like Arnie, but, for today's kids, naw. My kids won't give it a second glance. I'll watch the first episode just for nostalgia's sake and that'll be it.

I thought it was going to be more funny and original but the trailer did not really show any of that. The trailer was actually really boring

Did he spend all his money or something and needs to cash in real quick. Because if so, just do a sequel to Jingle All the Way. That's what we're all waiting for anyways.

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!! TV EXECS FINALLY MAKING A GOOD CALL! arnold your cartoon is nothing but propaganda to make people think you did a good job as Governor.. i live in cali...everyone hates you...even the republicans...you literally did nothing for this state except shut down parks, fire teachers, and close all sorts of social institutions....
