There's been a recent trend in young adult series-closers — two-part endings. Recent examples include Harry Potter and Twilight, and in 2014 and 2015 the box office smash The Hunger Games will split its final novel, Mockingjay, into a two-part film. It's not a beloved trend, usually seen as an attempt to squeeze more box office revenue from a popular franchise, but actor Stanley Tucci (Caesar Flickerman) explains that there is a reason behind it. "I think it does make sense to split it into two movies. You don't want to cram a lot of information into one. You'd either have one sort of very long movie or... we know those characters so well that we want to take the time to see their progression." Tucci spoke about this while promoting Transformers: Age of Extinction, and said that his character is "the ultimate coward" in the final movies. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 is released on November 21st, 2014.

Isn't the last book the same length as the first two books? Unless there's a lot to explore in the last book, I don't see the need to break it into two movies.

The only movie that was justified in splitting into two parts was Harry Potter.

I still can't get over that The Hobbit is being split into a trilogy.

I personally would have liked the second movie to have been two parts. The third book in my opionion was the weakest one. The reason why I would have liked the second one being longer was because it was rushed. In the book you got to like the characters a lot more then in the movie. But because of the time limit you didn't get to really enjoy the characters.
