That Was Fast! JMS Leaving Superman & Wonder Woman Comics to Focus on Superman: Earth One

Given the best-selling success of Superman: Earth One, there's no surprise that DC wants a sequel. What is surprising, however, is that writer J. Michael Straczynski has departed his much-publicized runs on the Superman and Wonder Woman monthly titles.

At DC's The Source, co-publisher Dan DiDio offered, "Joe created a Superman for the modern reader – a Clark Kent that’s conflicted and inexperienced but also focused and determined to embrace his destiny. We couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.”

“I’d originally come to DC to do the Superman Earth One book which, at the time, was top secret so nobody knew about it,” Straczynski said, “and filled out on Brave and the Bold for a while to have fun and get up to speed on the DCU. When I was done with SEO I took on the Superman and Wonder Woman monthlies on the theory that I’d have time to script the full 12 issues before bounding back onto Earth One. But when the huge numbers started coming in on Earth One, and the need to fastrack the next volumes became evident in order to keep the momentum going, I knew there was no way in god’s green earth that I could write that and the monthlies simultaneously."

He added that he would be taking a one-to-five year sabbatical from writing monthlies to focus on graphic novels like Superman: Earth One and Samaritan X. Graphic novels, he feels, is the way of the future. "And creatively," says Straczynski, "limited series and graphic novels have always been my strong suit in that they let me tell cohesive stories with a beginning, middle and end. They can also be written and drawn before anything is ever announced or solicited, as was the case with Earth One, which has been one of the greatest and most creatively rewarding experience of my career.”

With Superman being revamped for the big screen — and this is purely conjecture — one has to wonder if the success of Superman: Earth One will have any sort of impact on Man of Steel. Not too far-fetched when one keeps in mind rumblings that the film might deal with Clark making the decision to become Superman. The real question is: would Superman: Earth One serve as an interesting relaunching point for the character on the big screen?

Thank god. Hopefully the "Grounded" storyline gets wrapped up quick and the new writer comes up with something good.

I hate this new emo twilight bullsh!t idea. Superman is not a whiny emo, he's the Man of Steel(a model for all humans to aspire to be, not escape from)! Stop with all the reboots. How many times do we have to read an origin story? Build character not origins. This makes me want to punch a hole through my own grandmother.

The thing I liked most about Earth One is how they changed Superman's Physique.
When he was playing football he was the smallest/shortest person on the field.
I honestly don't see why Supes has to be physically imposing, He is basically unstoppable anyway.

I really disliked what JMS did to Wonder Woman. I'm hoping whoever takes over will undo all the destruction they he did to her. (The costume, especially.)

As for the Man of Steel movie, I'm with SolidSnake. We've all seen Superman's origins a million times. We just suffered through 10 years of Smallville telling us all about "Young Superman." What we HAVEN'T seen, at least not in the last 20-30 years, is Superman actually being Superman and kicking some ass. Is that really too much to ask for?

People fell in love with the word emo to much Superman Earth One was not emo he did not act emo he was unsure of himself a little less confident but at the end was the traditional Superman he was smiling when he put on his glasses and suit and looked like the normal Clark Kent.

His Superman and Wonder Woman stories are not over either Chris Roberson and Phil Hester will work on the books using his notes the story by him will continue people seem to miss that.

I have a theory that Loeb was sent to Marvel to create shitty comics. I think Marvel found this out so they sent JMS to do the same at DC. How else do you explain Ultimates 3&4, Ultimatum, first 20 issues of the Hulk. Now I'm still hoping that Captain America:White is great. I also enjoy JMS Brave and the Bold, but Grounded has been the worse Superman run in a long time(Chuck Austen).

JMS did the same thing to us Thor fans. He gave us a great reboot/run on the title then abruptly bailed since he didn't want Thor reintegrated back into the 'big' Marvel storylines like Siege.

@Unreal2K9 you don't like grounded... I think it is a really well done story right now
I don't know maybe it's just me but I think it brings Superman to a place where he hasn't been in a long time

Funny thing is that before JMS came on the books no one read and said it was terrible when he took over more people came on and she got more noticed.

deadpool72

If you have not read the comic then you can't properly get an insight into it Earth One is much better then Smallville and is actually Superman before the ending.

thinking about the TV and Film timeline with Superman, the first movies with Superman opened with something to do with whatever he was fighting, the one I remember was the Mole Men, lol, then it went to the Daily Planet bullpin where George Reeves and the one who played Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen were talking about things going on then the start with the Mole Man being uncovered and reported to the Daily Planet, Lois running off to get the story ahead of Clark, and Clark running into the Janitor's room and turning into Superman and it was off, no origin, no backstory, no seconds thoughts, this is what Superman was intended to do, since we can't get a new idea out of Hollywood, go back and just use that formula again and make a good Superman movie, honestly its just that simple, we've had the best origin movie in Superman The Movie, I don't think anyone over the age of 5 honestly doesn't know it, so why do it again unless it has drastically changed, other wise I really don't see why it would be considered again, but that's just my opinion

@Teois42 Earth one is really good man. But nowhere near as Birthright. They keep doing so many Superman origins nevertheless; it's like the least thing that needs exploring, please cb writers just give us some greater Superman stories!

I haven't read Earth One yet, but I'm interested in getting it. And Birthright. I like the concept of a young Superman trying to figure out himself and on the path to becoming Superman, it's a good idea IMO. Just like Smallville had a good idea, it was just executed poorly.

What JMS has done to Superman is absolute filth. I don't know which is worse- his idiotic "Man of Stroll" storyline or this "earth one" crap, which is probably the worst story of Superman's youth ever (worse even than the execrable Smallville).

I just hope that this doesn't affect the upcoming movie at all. We don't need the umpteen billionth retelling of the damn origin story. Let's just bring on Brainiac or Darkseid and let the property damage begin!

JoshWilding - 11/10/2010, 3:51 PM
I've not read "Earth One" but his work on both Superman and Wonder Woman has been very underwhelming so it's probably for the best that he'll no longer be writing them. It's a pity, because his work on Spider-Man and Thor for Marvel was superb.
BetaRayB
BetaRayB - 11/10/2010, 3:51 PM
This is as bad as the Red Hulk. Maybe even moreso. Emo Superman? All they did was take emo Peter Parker from Spider-Man 3, put him in FULL on emo mode and call it Superman. ""Joe created a Superman for the modern reader – a Clark Kent that’s conflicted and inexperienced but also focused and determined to embrace his destiny."

Bunch of [frick]ing bullshit, if you ask me! Everyone involved should be ashamed!

He's not emo in the book he is actually smiling at the end and when he puts on his glasses and suit and is the old school Clark Kent.

What are some DC graphic novels that everyone recommends.
I was gonna grab some subscriptions, but the DC comic website is confusing and unorganized. Marvel is easier to use.

People who can't tell that the story took a confused Superboy (which is normal considering) and turned him into a normal Superman by the end of the story didn't really understand the book (or cant read but i doubt comic book fans have poor reading skills). It made it natural and it wasn't like "hes the godsent son of a super race who grew up with and possess the greatest morals a person can have so therefore, fights evil."

I think it's funny about how people are complaining about superman's "Emo hair". If you love the old haircut so much, I'd love to see you all walk around with the "Superman curl". I'm sure there's a few guys that I go to school with that would love it too, whatever floats your boat.

I still am yet to read this though, so I can't say anything about the content of the book. I'm fine with Supes/Clark having a haircut that doesn't make him look like a prick or anything though.
