The Comics Quickie #3
Sorry guys. Not only have the last two weeks have been a lot busier than I expected, but the lack of REAL casting news regarding Cap is a downer every time come to CBM. Anil’s been doing reviews for the last two weeks and posting them at the bottom of Quickie #2. Thanks for keeping it alive Anil! (I’m gonna copy and paste some of his reviews up here from the last two weeks).

WEEK OF 24TH FEB COMICS – by Anil Rickly
MARVEL:

1. amazing spider man 622 - loved the aunt may tripping out cuz or mr negative's powers...this gauntlet is still kinda iffy to me...i disliked the electro and morbius and black cat...but loved the mysterio, mr negative and chameleon...wish id see more norman and jj in this book :(...overall an average read..but i do look fwd to the lizard arc and cant wait for the kravinoffs to reveal their true gauntlet plan....the spidey morning after with black cat cracked me up...when pete catches mj and harry sexing i will be laughing loudly

2. avengers initiative 31 - brilliant book...gage and co. look set to make avengers academy a must-see...this book allows so many narratives that it shows how well written it was...hood, constrictor, diamondback etc taskmaster...are all so well written...i loved the ozzie in this bk also...lots of action and norman is storming :)...one of the top reads this week...next issue seems even better

3. dark wolverine 33 - jeez...the fates issue and much of this seems so predictable and unnatural...pathetic...but still readable...thor fried his ass hard :)..nothing too special with this
4. fall of red hulks...no 2...well done and showed that thundra was a decent character...along with lyra,....the rulk has a love mush? ironic huh...banner and skaar better improve and come good next issues

5. ms marvel 50 - skrull clone of mar-vell...hmmm..the whole arc was weak as hell...terrible book..i think she's gonna die in the 2 siege choices

6. new avengers 62 - not one of bendis' brilliant work....but an overall sweet issue....loved the cap and fury interaction...ronin and bucky and cage also rocked...dreamt i was up on a roof overlooking crime...was sweet indeed...sets up nicely into siege
7. thor 607 - amazing...need i say more...gillen is the successor to JMS...this left out lots of asgard action but the ragnarok arrival to kill volstagg and perhaps thor was fun...this book is the best out there...kinda moved slow and timed out for certain places but this plot is amazing...ragnarok is here for blood :)

8. xforce - art too dreary to get a perfect dark view...but the proudstar bros are rocking very hard in this book..cant wait to see how they end selene...nice dialogue

9. xfactor 202 - what is doom doing with miller? i have no clue but this book seems to be goin up again 2010 cuz 2009 was brutal...the plot kicks ass...and other plot threads are seen...overall we know stuff , what marvel wants us to know lol
10. xmen legacy 233 - nice art indeed but this proteus fight and overall plot seemed to meander from the necrosha title a bit...irene adler's interaction with rogue and blindfold was the main bright spot in this book!!!

11. batman and robin 9 - cant believe dick tried to resurrect a bruce corpse in the l-pit...stupid of him...but the batwoman death plot was well scripted...as was the damian/alfred defense against evil bruce...this still doesn't give hints how bruce will return...just that tim drake was right wwhen he said bruce was alive...a fact that has not been touched upon by this book or drake's red robin...poor of you DC...i hope to enjoy more grayson in cowl before bruce's return

12. blackest night 7 - amazing as usual. reis...and mahnke should do all dc books...art is wicked...johns is wicked...and now we just get pure action...lots of squads going at it...more of nekron and black hand....we see why earth was so important to abin sur....atrocitus, luthor and ahem...sinestro steals the show...enter the entity of light...and we see the white lantern on the last pg....a very interesting and shocking choice!!

13. t-bolts 141 - sets up a nice ending that meets another avengers team into siege in an interesting part of asgard on a very interesting mission....but overall, parker has not been able to give the dynamic that diggle and ellis did in the past...in all fairness, this new team has diff elements to them...im just waiting for luke cage and co. to take the reins....

14. green arrow black lantern - a well written read, lots of dirty secrets, that help establish the fall of green arrow and lots of heartbreaking revelations to the canary...nice to see jt krul bring the whole arrow family together...cant wait to see how red arrow becomes the arsenal and what happens to a disgraced ollie post BN
3rd March, 2010 – by Anil Rickly

1.invincible iron man 24 - slow, slow...but damn fine story telling by fraction...while his UXM leaves some to be desired, his iron man has been nice...he writes a brilliant osborn, and did well disassembling stark's mind...and this journey is immense...i love the pepper and maria hill he writes also...but the probz is...well im too anxious and hyper to see iron man enter the siege battlefield...so reading this slow-paced issue just has me yelling 'are we there yet??? times 1000'...the art is smooth but salvador draws a terrible steve rogers:(...alls i can say is i cant wait for stark to reign in siege..and the last pg of this issue is F-ING A+++ and leads to some sweet stuff post siege...fraction is the man to replace bendis after avengers cuz fraction has iron man, and with thor, he's got 2 big icons in amazing places after siege...he is the avengers understudy imo

2. mighty avengers 34 - not nice at all. the plot went astray...capturing a god? after the loki reveal, id think slott would continue to rock but he tanks...and makes pietro a raw bitch! thor is also not well written...and defends loki when it's obvious loki helped cast him out? so many coincidences and thor cant get a clue yet? loki was done well but pym and co. suck in this issue...the fact that pym offers loki membership...and this disassembles the team was really shit...the way in which the mighty avengers split is so random and left-field...you'd think this was their first mission....poor poor poor..and if they split now, how do they reassemble to battle t-bolts in the end of t-bolts 141???? slott app put this issue together in 5 mins

3. ult avengers 5 - i didnt like the previous issue...but millar opened amazingly...and wrote an amazing Ult red skull..the plot is amazing...comes together well...all characters get enough screen time to properly have an impact...i love hawkeye being the new cautious leader...but war machine really came off well as a cross between luke cage and tony stark...and well, ult cap redeems himself when we see his plan...elements of 616 brilliant tactician mixed in with the badass ult cap we know...millar wins big...epic issue and one of the best ive read in a long time from any marvel book...and the last pg...KICKASS
4. new ultimates 1 - loved it. loved how the teams came around and the plots thickened. thumbs up loeb but i know u have potential to f this up...the loki reveal was poor at best...but all those well drawn tits, sexy girlz by cho...and heck the blatant sex...well this issue was filled with so many hot chicks, i felt as if i were reading an anime penthouse...boy what i would have given to be ult thor or ult tony stark...the last page was well written..and i concur...tits rock
Recap – by Jusme6
Looks like things are starting to make sense in the Hulk universe. Red is starting to make sense to me. If you look at the previews for next week’s TIH it seems pretty obvious that Glen Talbot is the Red Hulk (good call Anil). It’s also looking like the bad guys really are gonna win which I’m starting to enjoy which will then kick off World War Hulks—do we want the “good guys” or the “bad guys” to win? Fading fast is my hope that Hiro-Kala will have any part in WWHs (is he really Hulks son? He doesn’t really reflect Hulk or Banner to me).
It feels like the X-Verse is taking FOREVER to get to Second Coming. Things seem pretty predictable in Cable, Uncanny, and X-Force and I’m surprised to find myself enjoying the Nation-X storyline. It’s hard to come up with something original for the X-Men who have been around since forever, but I really think they’ve touched on something new here in Utopia. I just hope Second Coming doesn’t change everything in a way that leaves us fans all pissed off and screaming “Why did they do that?!?!?”
Siege is AMAZING! I like how Norman’s forces plus Loki’s puppet mastery may actually be just enough to take down Asgard. You can’t attack the Gods and expect to win, but Norman’s gonna come a lot closer to winning than I would have thought. I can’t wait to see how Odin’s spear plays into it all. I really hope we find out who Norman’s secret weapon is next week.
Ultimate Universe is coming back strong from Ultimatum. In New Ultimates, Iron Man is becoming a lot more likable and a lot less one dimensional. Ultimate Red Skull has proven he is worthy of bearing the name “Red Skull.” Ultimate Rick Jones may branch off into an Ultimate Cosmic chapter (though calling himself “Nova” felt a little wrong to me). I’m hoping Ultimate Enemy reunites the F4 and I hope Ultimate X reinvents a new X-Men team that are not celebrities. Ult Spidy rocks imo! He reminds me of my teenage brother and his friends (minus the superpowers and costumes). The characters are kinda annoying but in a charming way.
Getting fired on TV is a new low for PP. The thing I don’t like about ASM is that it’s not very consistent. Some weeks it’s good and others mediocre at best, and it’s hard to tell which kind of issue you’re gonna get.
Special thanks to Anil Rickly for keeping the reviews alive.
Special thanks to Makiveli for yelling at me to put up another review post.

@Anil: I also liked how Cable 24 ended. Bishop hide-and-seek isn't quite over yet. All Cable did was put some time between them and Bishop (which has happened at the end of EVERY arc so far). Wouldn't mind Cable dying, but I don't know if he can die. He's been shot and stabbed about a million times all while over the age of 60 and he's still a tank (In Cable 24, Bishop stabs him through the chest with a sword and it just makes him limp and cringe).

I saw the preview for Dark Avengers and I don't think that image was an accurate depiction of Norman's secret weapon. It was just a big scary demon face. When the print comes out next week, I think it'll be changed to something that looks closer to his real secret weapon (which I REALLY hope is Odin).

Aw, I don't want Ms. Marvel to die.

I think we'll soon discover that the Ult Defenders got their powers the same way Valkyrie did.

Dude, there's no way She-Hulk is dead. They can't just do her like that. She's gotta be still around.

P.S. Forgot to mention Doom War. I was pleasently surprised by that issue. I may be a huge Black Panther fan by the time the series is over.

Next week is gonna HUGE with the comics at least on the Marvel end of things. I picked up the Batman and Robin a little while ago (end of Blackest Night) and I really enjoyed it. I kinda like Grayson filling in as Batman.

@Anil: You speak the truth.

1. Amazing Spider-Man #622 - For some reason Mr. negative still doesn't fit in my book!

5. Ms. Marvel #50 - I would've expected a better ending for the series... weak, but the art: WOW!

6. New Avengers #62 - I've said it before, Bendis is amazing great ideas, but doesn't always execute them the right way.

7. Thor #607 - Totally need to read this!

11. Batman and Robin #9 - This arc did not make sense at all! I hear that #10 redeems it all!

12. Blackest Night #7 - The ending was a bit unexpected. At least we now know that White Lanterns in Brightest Day don't lead to a happy story.

1.Invincible Iron Man #24 - Yeah slow, but still awesome!

2. Mighty Avengers #34 - I had created respect for Hank Pym's character, this ruined it for me! Capturing a god is not that weird, I mean Pym did do it before!

3. Ultimate Comics Avengers #5 - Have to read this!

@jusme: Second Coming will come! (No Pun intended!... Oh! and Ult New Ultimates, was... weird!

Oh I'm back BTW!

SORA'S BACK! SORA'S BACK! SORA'S BACK!

@Sora: Welcome back dude.

Gauntlet seems less impressive than any of the previous ASM runs post-1MD.

@Della: Dude, yesterday I was at work thinking about what you said about how it's all messed up that Norman and Harry Osborn are alive again. That may be true, but as a born Spidy fan, I think it's pretty cool that the current top-dog badguy in the MU is Norman Osborn--a Spidy bad guy as opposed to Magneto, Doom, Loki, Red Skull, MODOK, etc. I think it's really cool especially since Spidy's not really a big character in the big scope the way characters like Iron Man, Cap, Pym, Fury, Reed Richards, etc are.

SWEET COMIC REVIEWS!

ok first of all Im gonna start my rant by being a little harsh on my favorite book and thats Amazing Spider-Man. The "Gauntlet" hasnt been what I thought it would be. The only real action in the last 3 or 4 issues was Pete in bed with Black Cat. I love how he leaves his mask on when they have sex. And yes thats what theyre doing, hot, steamy, animalistic, violent, crazy sex! Peter Parker is the man! But besides that, the fight sequences have been short and anticlimatic. Hopefully the Lizard will bring back some excitement to the "Gauntlet". Whats with the female versions of Vulture and Scorpion? LAME! Carlie Cooper bores the hell outta me. Anil I dont think we are gonna get any Spider-Man/Osborne interactions until May when we get "American Son" again.... Normans gonna be in jail, Harrys gonna be pissed, and Gabriel Stacey is gonna take up the American Son mantle....

SIEGE #3 LOOKS AWESOME! I LOVE THE DELL OTTO VARIANT! Its so good to see Spidey finally show up and get involved! In Dark Avengers #15, is that demon looking thing that he sicks on Doom supposed to be the secret weapon? Thats the Void? It looks like Venom with the eyes, teeth, and tentacles. I know it isnt Venom because Gargan as Venom has become a pedestrian, mediocre super villian who doesnt scare anybody anymore. But look at the picture again and it looks like Venom used to look. Sentry has to die. After how dirty he did Ares, Thor wont let him live through SIEGE.

Hope as a reincarnation of Jean Grey? Makes sense because Jean always had the feel of a martyr/savior with the whole "all powerful Phoenix" thing. That would also explain Cable being so attached to Hope.

I dont know why we gotta "Hulk out" the other heroes... its bad enough we got 15 Hulks runnin around and now we got Hulked out Spidey and Wolvie? How is Wolverine gonna find time to be an X-Man, Avenger, X-Force, fight Romulus, and be Hulked out?

"FRANKENCASTLE" is lame. Daken cutting Punisher up into little pieces was one of the highlights of the year. They shoulda left Castle dead..... His Ultimate counterpart is gonna make a huge return in Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 #1....

The Wolverine/MrX book is cool. Awesome cover. The whole Logan/Romulus/Daken thing is a little slow right now but I think its gonna come to a deadly bloody conclusion in the next few weeks....

"Ultimate Comics X" is my new favorite book! I think Jusme hit the nail on the head as far as a new X-team that isnt celebrities... Logans kid Jimmy is the shit!

For some reason I thought Ultimate Enemy had something to do with Ultimate Rick Jones but I guess hes Ultimate Nova? So who the hell is the Ultimate Enemy? An excuse to get the Ultimate Fantastic Four back together? Is Reed Richards really dead? So they can make room for Ben Grimm and Sue Storms awkward romance? ....this better start makin sense soon....

Next months starts a "SIEGE:Captain America, SIEGE:Loki, SIEGE:Secret Warriors, SIEGE:Spider-Man etc." one-shot books that make a really cool picture if you put the covers together.... make sure you collect them all!

Anybody see the preview for "SHIELD #1"? if not, here it is- "Leonardo Da Vinci was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. So was Issac Newton. So were Imhotep and Zhang Heng and Galileo and many other geniuses throughout time. They were the first heroes to defeat Galactus and the Brood and turn Celestials back. They saved the world long before Captain America or Iron Man were ever born, but what does this mean to our heroes of today? What does this mean to Nick Fury? Do not miss this Marvel Comics masterpiece that fans will be talking about for decades to come." due out April 7. Sounds like the Illuminati storyline in the Assasins Creed videogames.

Am I the only one NOT looking forward to the "Heroic Age"? Ive enjoyed the blood and violence of the "Dark Reign" and this new "Heroic Age" just seems so bright and PG rated.... it feels so Disney influenced....

DellaMorte- if OMD is something you "thankfully know nothing about", then why bring it up?

Glad to see the reviews back up, Jusme and Anil you guys are awesome!

Concerning the Gwen Stacy pregnancy: I vaguely remember a Spiderman arc where the twin children of Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn came to New York thinking that Spiderman was their father. Eventually they became Green Goblins and died or something, but that's not important. What's important is that in this arc we discover that Norman was a sexual predator who forced himself upon Gwen Stacy and she was too ashamed to tell anyone but MJ (and I think she made her promise to keep it a secret). So basically I never read American Son, but I new long before American son that Normy got Gwen Stacy pregnant, and no it wasn't because she's a little whore. It was because Normy's a sick twisted rapist.

@Della: Untapped resource--good point, but for being a little old Spiderman villain, Norman's been pretty cool.

Also, we know Norman's "secret weapon" ISN'T the Void. If it was, the Sentry wouldn't be flying from the top of the building to come and save Norman.

Anil: I agree with you that the crown belongs to Doom and I'm thinking the purpose of Doom War is to remind us of that fact. Also, you made me think of this: One year ago I would have told you that Loki is the most expendable person in the Cabal. I would have told you he serves absolutely no purpose to this Dark Reign thing. Within the last few months however it's becoming more clear that Loki has been the puppet master behind everything leading up to Siege. It totally snuck up on me.

Speaking of Loki, can someone tell me the purpose of putting Loki in a woman's body? I'm starting to think it was a highly unnecessary modification to the character and story.

MORTE- I read the new clone saga and it wasnt as good as the original. They crammed 5 years of comics into 6 issues and missed alot of plot points. It wasnt just a few weeks that went by it was YEARS. It had a huge impact on Spidey and the Marvel U, whether we liked it or not. And Norman returning was its own thing, to better explain the clone saga and bring Peter back to replace Ben because fanboys were pissed, but it happend a year afterwards. I dont have a problem with Norman coming back because the explanation was well thought- the goblin serum healed him and his return was memorable- killing Ben with the glider. But Harrys return in OMD sucked and I dont even know why you had to bring OMD up because its such a downer to otherwise awesome comic reviews. And how you gonna call me a young buck for reading the original clone saga when your sittin here talkin about the new one?
Makiveli21
Makiveli21 - 3/14/2010, 8:05 PM
And Im not just readin the new books Im reading the books in their entirety. And if you read them all then you would know that Norman didnt "come back from the dead" because he never died. Thats not new school or old school thats the entirety of the story. If you read the first chapter of a book and then the last chapter, than you didnt read the whole book.
Makiveli21
Makiveli21 - 3/14/2010, 8:08 PM
I started on this comment page talking about being harsh on Amazing Spider-Man and now Im defending it lol but I hate when people try to call me out like I dont know the history of the character. Its not my fault that the explanation of Normans "death" came 30 years later. Or that you dont like Marvels explanation of it, I didnt write the books I just read them and defend them.

@Della: I'm really gonna miss the Dark Avengers. I feel like there coulda been so much more done with that title if they only got a few more years. It feels like the title just started. Marvel Boy being on the bad guy team shoulda been developed more. Instead they gave him a spaceman/marshmallow suit and... and... don't get me started on Marvel Boy (don't get Anil started either).

@Anil: Sentry's not Marvel man. Joe Q said in a press conference (actually mighta been Emerald ComiCon) that we would hear news about Marvel Man in 30-60 days. Therefore, Siege will be done before we even get our first Marvel Man teaser image. I hope they do right by Marvel Man and don't just randomly throw him in the mix.

@Anil: You know how much we were all appalled by 'Ultimatum'? I just read that last night and it blew my mind. Seeing as how there could be a bright future for the Ultimate Universe in titles like Ult. X, Ult. Avengers, and New Ultimates, 'Ultimatum' doesn't feel as depressing as it used to imo. I actually found it to be a REALLY awesome event. I can't wait to see what rises from the ashes.

@jusme: yep... I won't be as involved as I was before.. but I am back!

@Anil: On the Gwen issue: I said it before Gwen is my favorite character of all time... Her afair with Osborn totally freaked me out but I have my peace with the event...
I don't take it out of continuity cause even though it's not a story I am happy with it does bring a whole lot of potential stories after it!
