Which Universe is Better for Starting a New Series?

Would you rather have your series take place in Marvel Universe or the DC Universe?

What are the pros and cons of each main comic book universe? For example Marvel is much more realistic than DC what with their relatively low number of fictional cities and countries as opposed to DC's rule that nearly every hero gets their own fictional city to protect. Continuity is easier to understand in the DC universe, what with the New 52, but many readers cite that they enjoy Marvel because of its rich history and wealth of great stories from the past. I am asking which universe you all would prefer for a story to take place in because I am crafting a series that I would very much like to take place in one of these two universes, but I'm simply unsure of which to choose.

Why don't you just make up your own universe. If your
creating your own characters there's no reason to rip
the two major brands.

Yeah, I originally wanted it to be self contained, but the problem with that is there comes a point when the characters have all met and interacted with each other, and eventually stagnation occurs. In an already established universe like Marvel or DC, there's a near innumerable amount of characters to interact with.

I'd make my own universe or connect it to marvel and dc as a bridge of sorts

Yeah if that's the case I'd go with what Supes17 said.
DC is set in real places just as much as Marvel just
fictional cities within different states. Its your world
if you want Spider-Man in Gotham you can(there both in
New York anyway).

I thought Gotham was a Chicago type city in New York, with Metropolis being NYC.
I don't really know

I guess no ones really answering your question. So I'll
try.
pros
What heroes do you like most(name 5 whatever company has the most probably what universe you want).
Marvel pro
All set in real locations so art design and locations are there to see.
Marvel Con
All set in real locations you get grief for portraying landmarks wrong.
DC pro
Made up locations more license to do what you will no boundaries.
DC con
Made up locations may make people confused(as you can see half of us even knew Gotham was in New Jersey).

I knew it was in NJ, but I forgot. I did remember it was somewhere in the East Coast

@m1312020: Actually, Gotham City has been set in many states. It depends on who your asking. New Jersey isn't definite canon.

WTF Gotham is in New Jersey, hell no, i thought it was modeled after New York City.

It's pretty much a mix of NYC and Chicago.
It varies in DC comics.
Some comics place Gotham in the state of New York.

I would definitely love for my series to take place primarily in Chicago, just because I feel there's so many iconic cities for DC to simply create their own locales, and if I chose Marvel, New York is just so damn overused. I like the characters of Marvel more, but I feel like for every great character they push there are 5 more in limbo. DC had the right concept with their new 52, where they pared down their character list, but it's been hard to get a grip on who exists and what happened since the reboot happened.

I don't care where Gotham really is. I just want to say that I think that Gotham looks like it was modeled after Chicago, and Metropolis is modeled after NYC.

Pro's about Marvel are that yes most of Marvel superhero's are based in real locations and has science to explain most of the superhero's while the pro's for D.C. is that there can be more of an imagination on locations and doesn't really have to explain the powers scientificly.

The con's for Marvel are that there is alot of other superhero's like the x-men and you would have to create a superhero that is awesome enough to have it's own story with out them. Same goes for D.C. you would have to make a new superhero that can do well with out the Justice League. Or you could just make the hero apart of the certain groups like the league, titans, x-men, avengers, etc.

Why not just write a marvel and a dc version. challenge yourself as a writer

Thanks HaroldofGalactus, I never really thought of that idea.

you're welcome Drizzy.

The only reason I suggested it is because I was having the exact same dilemma with my next generation fan-fic. I couldn't decide, so I made one of each version and found out it opened up so many more possibilities story-wise.

both marvel and dc are easily accessible. even with the reboot, dc is the same as marvel. but what about dynamite's super hero universe? project superpowers is awesome as hell...

DC. But to avoid clashing with other authors and whatnot, just create your own universe. It's easier and you won't have to worry about the chance of copying someone else's idea cause then that's when you get sued.
