Who is Really Winning the CBM War?

Who is Really Winning the CBM War?

Is the established MCU with its ever-expanding universe taking the CBM cake or is the fresh DCCU with mountains of hype running off with their introduction to the Justice League? Maybe it's Sony with the new take on Spidey. Perhaps even Fox who is refreshing the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise. Let's analyze the real champion.

WHO IS WINNING?

If you are the kind of person who has clicked on this article in hopes to bash someone for their love of Marvel or you just know that you wanted to come in here and announce how much better DC is doing, here's a suggestion: get over yourself.

After reading countless "winning" editorials, seeing incessant fans clogging the fan-fic section with movie posters for their side, or rolling my eyes at hundreds of biased comments, I would have to say that I have successfully figured out who is winning the CBM game....

THE FANS
Let me break down why.

MARVEL STUDIOS

Marvel has tried very hard to release several (so far 10) films that link up with one another to form an expanded universe with solo stories and team-up films. The tone is highly comedic for the most part, but there is still plenty of straight-from-the-page action. They've had some duds and they've had some treasures. Regardless, they took the CBM game to a new level. They are sure to take this even further by bringing Thanos to Earth after adding even more heroes to their roster.

DC/WARNER BROS
After the Dark Knight trilogy, DC decided they needed to start up a franchise that wasn't centered around Christian Bale's realistic Batman. Their next film, Man Of Steel, had mixed reactions, but it is very safe to say that over 95% of fans and movie-goers alike share the sentiment that it washed the bad taste out that Superman Returns left in our mouths. After relative success, DC decided to shoot for the stars and announce a movie that fans didn't even know they wanted until that fateful day: Batman vs Superman. A new Batman, a new tone, and hints of several other DC heroes, the upcoming BVS:DOJ is sure to delight us regardless of some potential flaws it may carry.

SONY
A similar situation to DC's refreshing Batman, Sony quickly decided to reboot its Spider-Man franchise after the poorly received Spider-Man 3, despite a decent first movie and an even better Spider-Man 2. Hardcore fans are very much against this new take on Peter Parker as he is "a semi-intelligent, yet confident hipster." However, I can see Marc Webb just trying to appeal to a new generation of fans. Regardless, we've been given the famous Gwen Stacy death and a set-up for a Sinister Six standalone film. Garfield may not be everyone's ideal Spidey and the first two movies may not have had the story we had all been clamoring for, but I bet we will be pleasantly surprised with shots of Spider-Man taking on his six most famous foes.

FOX
Fox's X-Men movies started this new trend of comic book movie adaptations. While not the first of its kind, it is more-or-less the first well-received of its generation. It spawned the critically acclaimed X2: X-Men United which both lit a fire in our hearts for the amazing Nightcrawler and blew it out in one fell swoop. It all seemed to go downhill from there. X-Men: The Last Stand was not exactly a fan-favorite and X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn't do much to fix any problems. Then First Class came along. It's no Godfather, but it really captures the foundation of the X-Men. Next was The Wolverine, another film with a mixed reception, that was just enough to bring us back into the world of Wolverine with flair. Most recently, we were treated to X-Men: Days Of Future Past. This film is considered to be one of the best of the genre (mostly because it erases the duds that came before it). It has an excellent plot and spectacular performances by the returning Fassbender, McAvoy, Hoult, Lawrence, Jackman, Stewart, and McKellen. Its set-up for the impending Apocalypse film has us all thirsty for more.
In addition to the X-Men, Fox has decided to reboot their failed Fantastic Four franchise. While little information is given (information that has yet to accept a positive response from fans), a strong, young cast and a new take on the characters' story should be just what Fox needs to have another successful franchise under their belts.

ANYWAYS,
the next time you decide to jump on a Marvel article to say that the MCU sucks and DC is better or Fox-Men is destroying your faith in movies or The Amazing Spider-Man series is a joke, think about this: there is nothing you can do to fix the "problems" you have with these movies. These properties are with their respective studios and will continue to be so. So, instead of complaining and nagging constantly at the slightest bit of news or clicking on articles YOU KNOW you are just reading to troll, why don't you just get over yourself and realize that we are in the Golden Age. We have several comic book movies being released annually. Love the cinematic generation you're apart of because it might not be around in 20 years.

Unless you're hand-counting each dollar these studios rakes in, no one can really be declared a winner... except for the fans they make these movies for.

I think @Pasto has been possessed... This is bad.

I'm definitely a winner, simply because I have enjoyed movies from every studio that makes CBMs. Whether it be DOFP or The Wolverine with Fox, TASM with Sony, The Dark Knight Trilogy with DC, or the whole of the MCU (That's right, I like EVERY MCU movie). It's a glorious time to be a CBM fan, as we've been treated to the best our genre can offer.

And, no, the Lions are definitely not winning...

Sorry, but, there is a difference between complaining and trolling. You might not want to hear about someone else's disappointment in a movie that they have high hopes for, however, it doesn't automatically mean it is being done maliciously or without merit. It's not even realistic to expect everyone to keep their comments positive or keep them to their selves; it's a radically idealistic expectation (borderline communistic even). Trolling, which is malicious and illogical in nature on the other hand, I could certainly live without. But, if ppl could just stop being so sensitive about differing opinions, it would alleviate a lot of unnecessary, juvenile drama around here. Then again, you have to remember that many of the users on this site ARE juveniles. In any event, I think the freedom to exchange different view points is the highlight of the entire ComicBookMovie.com experience. This place would be boring as hell if everybody thought the same and got along all the time. It's okay to disagree if you can be respectful and rational about it. It should be an interwebs crime to troll.

But, you get a thumbs up for effort.

I didn't specifically mean to cut out all the complaining. Mostly just the views of those who are taking sides before even reading the article. Example: Fan that specifically loves Marvel and refuses to enjoy anything DC, sees article about BVS, clicks, doesn't read, goes straight to comments to announce how Marvel is better.

That shit gets old. I understand that not all of us love all of these movies, but rereading the same stuff from elitists (especially around Comic-Con) on every article is frustrating and I'm trying to point out that there isn't one that is better than another. There is no war. There are just several comic book fans and several comic book movies for all of us to enjoy. Why not just enjoy the ones we know we like rather than blindly insulting disliked properties.

You TOTALLY had me with the very first sentence. Seriously, awesome stuff. More people need to realize that.

I even agree with how you say the fans are "winning" this (even though Yoss is totally right...it's really the studios).

But then you tried to pass it off as if EVERY comic book movie is good and more than what we deserve, and no matter how awful, terrible, and objectively bad they are...that we should just suck it up and enjoy it, just because.

Ugh. No, that's where you lose me. We shouldn't just blindly support and love EVERY movie, as if they've earned it just because they're "trying" and doing their best. We should support the GOOD ones. The moment we just settle for what we get, simply because it's the "golden age" and it's better than what we got in the early 90's and 2000's...that's the moment where studios realize they can be lazy, deliver half-assed blockbuster movies, and get away with it. When that happens, the studios TRULY win...and all the fans lose.

And what you've described is "trolling". It's just the way you worded it that made it seem as if anyone without a praising opinion is an annoyance. Even SauronsBANE got a similar (albeit different) interpretation. I understand it may not have been your intention, but, there is a underlying generalization that if a user can't muster anything nice to say about a CBM, they shouldn't say anything at all IMO.

@SauronsBane

Sometimes when I get on a rant, I tend to lose my meaning among my words. I honestly do not believe we should love every CBM just because. My argument is that there shouldn't be sides taken. I did say that each studio had duds, I just chose to show the brighter side of the studios' work so maybe every elitist and side-taker can see that making this a war doesn't make sense.

@PietroMaximoff, You know, I just read the comment you left right before mine...and I pretty much agree with that 100%! I'm just not sure you managed to convey those ideas in your article unfortunately, like Enphlieuwince said. The words in your article definitely made it seem like you wanted to shut down ALL criticisms of comic book movies, no matter how legitimate they may be. I hear what you're trying to say though, and I definitely agree!
