EDITORIAL: My thoughts on Johann Urb portraying Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil: Retribution.

I am one of the few that liked this series of films, and I have been behind the story 100%. But after seeing Urb as fan-favorite, Leon Kennedy, I do believe that I have just lost all faith on this and any possible continuing films.

Before I elaborate on my headline of what this article is about, I will start by explaining Leon to the best of my ability, Leon Scott Kennedy is a main protagonist of the Resident Evil video game series, and is perhaps the best of them all. He has always had a string of luck on his side that would make Chris Redfield jealous. Now, I personally, grew up with Resident Evil 2, and I thought of Kennedy as a strong, reliable presence. Easy to look up to, and favorable among the other survivors and heroes of the outbreak that plagues the world of Resident Evil. He knows how to survive. He is one of the greatest action heroes in the history of video games.

I remember back when I was introduced to Resident Evil-I would watch my uncle play through Resident Evil 2 every night, and soon, started playing it myself. I fell in love with the survival-horror genre ever since then and became a huge fan of the like, with games such as this, and Silent Hill. I could never really find a Resident Evil title that I could just sit and play through besides the first and second, until Resident Evil 4 was introduced, with Leon as the starring character. Today, no matter what I play, Resident Evil 4 still holds strong as the best game I have ever played, hands down. That though is a different story.

Kennedy rose from skilled rookie who had potential in Resident Evil 2 to the highly-resourcful, tactically brilliant goverment agent in Resident Evil 4 and it was known that he rose quickly within the ranks, further showing off his use of skill in the environment. Now, for the film, we don't know much of yet, but I am very skeptical on Urb's performance as Leon. He just doesn't jump up and shout "LEON!" like I had expected. I saw the article by ComicBookMovie's own WolvieCBM, and I didn't have to watch the video, I was already disappointed. I honestly had some faith that I would get to see Leon light up the silver-screen, but instead I get some half-assed wannabe backstreet boy that looks as if he is till stuck in the times of when they were ever popular.

I am honestly so disappointed. Atleast Wentworth Miller favored Chris Redfield, and I could recognize his part If I didn't know it in the first place. But Johann as Leon would have had me stumped for a good while before I could figure it out.
I mean, they couldn't even go with an original look...just a rip-off to the outfit, and some unknown actor sporting facial hair, and looking like he's also sporting a generic wig. Hell, if you want to get even more technical, the combover is even on the wrong side. The silver lining to this film is that the role of Barry will be portrayed by Kevin Durand. He is a good actor and I can see him as Barry.

As for the casting of Leon, they could have went with better choices. Jensen Ackles or Jared Pedalecki of the hit show Supernatural would have filled Leon's shoes better than that of Johann. He seems like a friendly guy and all from watching the video, but It just looks like another random survivor to me. It doesn't look like Leon. I will inevitably see this film, but not when it comes to spending a large amount of money. I have been waiting for Leon to show up in these films for some time now, and when he finally does, Resident Evil: Retribution totally kills all anticipation I had for the character on live-action film.

Well that is enough of my ranting, and I am sure that the community feels the same way I do, but as that goes, we will just have to wait and see how Urb does in the upcoming Resident Evil: Retribution. To see Johann as Leon if you haven't already, just view the news article, or watch the video below.

Starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine, Boris Kodjoe as Luthor West, Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker, Michelle Rodriguez as Rain, Johann Urb as Leon Kennedy and Kevin Durand as Barry, Resident Evil: Retribution is set to blast into theaters, September 14, 2012.

I'm not really a RE gamer so I guess I'll never understand why Leon Kennedy is such a fan favourite, but your problem with this Urb dude is the fact that he looks nothing like Leon, so how the [frick] does Jensen Ackles "look" anything like Leon. Just found that a bit confusing thats all. I honestly don't give a shit about the film franchise enjoyed the first one but haven't seen any of the prequels and I don't plan to either.

The films were never anywhere near as good as the games, but the last two have been down right unwatchable. I never wanted to see Leon show up in this series.

I'll be skipping this and replaying RE:4.

I think that he looks terrible as Leon no matter how he acts. I think they should have just waited until Jensen was available after this season of Supernatural was done filming. Unfortunately if this does well, there will be a Resident Evil 6 with Alice. Milla doesn't have any other big series but the Zoolander sequel, since Three Musketeers tanked and I don't expect Danger Girl will happen.

I am still amazed that this movie NEVER got rebooted to begin with. Better yet, where the hell is my Bionic Commando movie!

Urbs an alright actor. Hopefully he does the character justice. I actually wanted Travis Fimmel who stared in tv series "The Beast" with Patrick Swayze to portray Leon...

hahaha you do realize that leon already looks like a backstreet boy with that combover in the first place ya douche haha......so i guess they did a great job casting.....oh wait does his eyes not look slainted enough do his cheek bone not match the real leo..[frick] dude seriously? that asshole from prison break did not come close to looking like or have the same [frick]ing build as chris, who gives a shit if his comb over is on the other side,"Atleast Wentworth Miller favored Chris Redfield, and I could recognize his part"....are you serious? if you have OCD then you would of hate the chris redfield from afterlife his head was buzzed and he looked like a [frick]ing hobo with his baggy shirt, im a hardcore RE fan to the [frick]ing T , and who gives a [frick] if he has a five o clock shadow, at least they got his costume right for leon and i happen to think he looks like leon too, believe me im super picky with character choices, but honestly dude you have to be retarded if you think wentworth miller was recognizable as chris redfield...i didnt even know who the [frick] his character was when i saw the movie untill they said his name in the movie...

I totally and completely agree with you. Leon is by far the best RE character and I am so, so disappointed that they couldn't even get him right. I don't understand how the director goes all the way as far outfits go, making them identical to those in the games, and yet he picks actors that don't even fit the part. Hopefully Johann Urb will deliver. Hopefully Retribution will be a better movie than its predecessors. Honestly, anyone who argues with you is not a true RE fan of the games, so they can't comprehend where you are coming from.

Okay, I know this is an old article, but I just saw the movie and had to see some other peoples' opinions.

I LOVE YOU. I read the article, started tearing up from just how accurate it was, and how angry it made me at the casting crew for the movie. Then I jumped down to the comments, saw the people trying to be assholes to you, and decided to make an account just to comment on this article.

Everything you said in this article was so perfect-- it was my exact thoughts typed out on a computer screen. As if it couldn't get any better, you decided to throw in Jensen and Jared, my two favorite actors from my childhood (I love/loved Supernatural so much).

Bottom line: TAKE THIS JAR OF YES, I NO LONGER HAVE USE FOR IT *hands you all of my yes* :3

Oh I completely forgot to mention.. I grew up watching my significantly older brothers play the Resident Evil games, though I was too young to know what I was watching. As I grew up to about the age of 8, I was introduced to the film series, and was instantly hooked.

Even later, I was reintroduced to the RE game series by my brothers once more, but this time they played Resident Evil 4. I must have watched them go through that game 40 times each. Leon has been my favorite video game character ever since, and will forever be my favorite, I can guarantee.

Then this idiot shows up and ruins the entire movie for me, though I do have to say I admired their Ada. She was perfect.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. I for one loved Johann Urb's interpretation of Leon. I have been a fan of the Resident Evil Franchise since it's beginnings. Johann does bare a strong resemblance to Leon. This article sounds a bit bias to me. It's the same old "Jensen Ackles should've been Leon" bullcrap. Ackles fans? Get over it. Capcom and Anderson selected their man. Now move on.
