We recently found out that Alex Kurtzman would be taking over as the sole showrunner of Star Trek: Discover, but now a new report reveals the writer will have an even larger role in CBS’s expanding Star Trek universe.

According to Variety, Kurtzman has signed a five-year deal with the network to supervise the expansion. This role will see him oversee the development of new series and other content set within the Star Trek universe.

Along with this news, Variety has received word on four potential series that Kurtzman would be overseeing. The first is said to come from the showrunners of Hulu and Marvel's Runaways, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, and will take place at Starfleet Academy.

Meanwhile, there are two other projects that are described as mini-series. There are no details available on one of them, but the other is supposedly based around the iconic Wrath of Khan story. There is also a mysterious animated series in the works.

There is no word on how far along these four series are in the development process, or on the chances of them getting the greenlight, but from the sound of things they are just the first of what CBS hopes will be many more new Trek shows.

So, what do you folks make of this news? Do you like the idea of more Star Trek shows besides Discovery? Make sure to share your thoughts below.

They should do a series about the early formation of Star Fleet from the collective space agencies of Earth.

If they could put this on a network I don't have to pay more money for or already do (Netflix, Amazon), I would be a regular viewer. I'm not paying for CBS All Access. That being said, my favorite thing to come out of this is the acronym for the show is STD.

Not a Kurtzman fan (not a fan of his film work), and not a Trekkie, but I really like Discovery.

Wasn't kurtzman overseeing the amazing spider-verse, and then the universal monster-verse? How is this guy still getting jobs overseeing a universe after those 2 failures.

@JustAChillFan - The shows he makes have made money for CBS and the Star Trek movies he was involved with made Paramount money.

Going to say one word/name for a new series...

ROMULANS.

They would make a perfect Political Plotting/Betrayal/Thriller. Make isn’t anytjing more than Vulcans, but with emotions and their production would make for dynamic architecture and fun spaceships.

I'm on board so long as they don't do anymore prequels. There should be a freaking international ban on prequels of anything from now on. Go 100 years after Voyager returned to earth, all new tech, new regions of space, new aliens, new stories please!
