ALIEN: ROMULUS Star Cailee Spaeny Says New Movie Will Take Place Between ALIEN And ALIENS

We can probably but any speculation about Cailee Spaeny playing an older version of Newt to bed now!

We still know very little about Fede Alvarez's upcoming Alien movie (the "Romulus" title hasn't even been officially confirmed), but Spaeny has now shared a somewhat surprising detail about the movie's timeline.

While chatting to Variety on the red carpet of last night's Gotham Awards, the Pacific Rim: Uprising actress revealed that Romulus takes place between the events of Ridley Scott's original Alien and James Cameron's sequel, Aliens.

“It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie,” Spaeny tells the site. “They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean Romulus will have any direct ties to either film, as this time-frame gives Alvarez a lot of room to play with.

At the end of Alien, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) goes into cryo-sleep, and when she's finally discovered at the beginning of Aliens, we're told that 57 years have passed since she and Jones the cat made their escape from the Nostromo.

“My first film was big-budget sci-fi,” Spaeny continues, referring to her role in Uprising. “I feel like I’m going back to that world. And I have so much fun. I like trying to do as many different things as I can. So I swapped my high heels and my beehive for spacesuits and lots of wire work. … I love watching those old ‘70s, ‘80s action sci-fi films. And I’m such a fan of that IP and Sigourney Weaver. It’s legendary to get to be a part of it.”

While there is always a chance this film will be connected to the previous instalments in the franchise, it is still being referred to as a reboot. Whatever the case may be, it's probably safe to assume that it won't continue the divisive plot lines that played out in Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant - although Scott will produce under his Scott Free banner.

Apparently, the legendary filmmaker was intrigued by an idea Alvarez pitched him on a few years ago, and called him out of the blue last year to see if he had any interest in developing it.

Hulu is also working on an Alien TV series with Noah Hawley (Fargo; Legion) that's expected to premiere at some point next year. Whether both projects will be linked in any way remains to be seen.

Spaeny is nominated for outstanding lead performance for Priscilla at this year’s Gotham Awards. Alien: Romulus is set to hit theaters on Aug. 16, 2024.

For a second I thought it was saying this ROMULUS was in an Alien movie.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but i feel Prometheus has aged pretty well.

@UniqNo - I really tried to like that movie. It had couple of great moments but too much stupid things and mystery boxes. It just kept asking questions without giving any solution and sequel just abandoned everything.

@MartianManHuntr - Yeah, i liked that it was asking questions and trying to expand the world.

The sequel definitley abandoned this as the main critism of part 1 was the lack of the xenomorph for an alien movie... and had to try and bring that back in.

@MartianManHuntr - you can blame the writer "Damon Lindeloffor" for how bad that film was. He can only answer questions with more questions and the dude has some serious "Daddy didn't love me" issuse which he puts in all his work. But Ridley is also to blame as he was the one who decided to retcon the cool spacejockey into just being a bald albino midget.

@UniqNo - I really liked it from day 1. And, I really hated Alien: Covenant from day 1.

@harryba11zack - Yeah that's another thing I didn't like. They shouldn't be explaining shit from first movie. I would have liked Prometheus more of it just existed in aliens universe but didn't touch anything from it. May be just show some alien species tinkering with black goo or what not and at the end show that goo is related to xenomorph.

@UniqNo - I liked Prometheus since day one and thought it was the beginning of a pretty good set up for how that derelict ship with the eggs ended up on LV-426.

But then the 2nd one happened and it just ruined it.

Yeah, whilst i certainly liked the evolution of David's story, the movie just forced more xenomoprh because that's what the studio wanted.

I want that true sequel with David and Nomi's character that clearly got cut and chopped down in the sequel.

@UniqNo - I think that's a good opinion.

I have no idea what they would develop in this TV series. My assumption is some projects only work on films and I don't think there is enough thing they can do in alien series.

It's basically a slasher genre so probably they would do something akin to Friday 13 movies, may be around 2 episodes to setup app characters and blam some deaths each episode.

@MartianManHuntr - This is for the movie coming out not the series.

@Deklipz - Thanks for correcting me, I confused it with TV series being developed by Noah Hawley. Not sure why.
