BOX OFFICE: AFTER EARTH Grosses $1M In Thursday Night Screenings

M. Night Shaymalan's critically panned sci-fi film After Earth, starring Will and Jaden Smith, has officially made $1 million in Thursday night showings. The movie is now on its way to a $35M opening weekend.

Despite mostly very negative reviews (the film currently has an abysmal 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), M. Night Shyamalan's Will and Jaden Smith-starrer After Earth looks to have an average box office opening. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sci-fi movie grossed a soft $1M in its Thursday night opening, behind the $1.5M debut of Summit's Now You See Me. Despite this, After Earth will open ahead of the Louis Leterrier-directed heist thriller, with a $35M opening weekend being predicted. This is a new low in recent years for Will Smith, who is considered one of Hollywood's biggest A-list actors. Do you plan on seeing After Earth this weekend?

I plan on seeing it. In a summer of sequels and reboots its nice to see an original sci-fi movie for a change. plus oblivion didn't do that well critically but I still really enjoyed it.

Signs was also shit. Sorry.

Well, the main problem is that the Smiths are the producers of this (it seems) shit movie. Lil’ Jaden felt like he was at home doing a home video.

Dont ever want to see this. Will Smith has turned into quite a tool, and he's turning his kids into tools as well. One review I read said this film was a pure vanity project. Im inclined to agree given that He, his son, his wife and his uncle are all involved in the movie in some capacity.

Smith even co-wrote the script with M. Night Shamalama ding dong. The movie is being universally panned as boring, and people are lamblasting Jaden Smith for not being able to act. Again, thats his Dads fault for putting him in a position he's not ready for. Jaden Smith is not a star. He's barely an actor at all. He cant carry a movie.

This year's box office result is even worst than last year's own.

Hey, $1 million is still a lot of money lol.

But seriously, Shyamalan should be flipping burgers now.

decent movie. not as good as i hoped but not shyamalan's fault at all. all the m. night hate is undeserved and i think it'd be a shame for him to be put out to pasture over this.

script was sturdy, but not stellar. camera, pacing, visuals all good. cgi was better than the commercials; the lion was pretty much the low point.

the thing that dragged it down was j. smith. i mean, i've seen plenty of worse young actors, and he's not BAD... if he had a supporting role or even worked in an ensemble he'd get by just fine. but at this point his range isn't what it needs to be to carry a film like this on his own.

@Blackandyellow,
Agreed! The 6th Sense was dude's only good movie. M. Night is a hack. And Will Smith has been in his share of lousy movies as well.

@blackandyellow - you don't like Unbreakable? That's a really good movie. Probly the best original comic book movies, per se, not based on a comic...

Check it out if u haven't seen it. Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson in hero and villain roles...

The movie has a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from movie critics who are paid to critique movies. It also has an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from normal moviegoers like us... Make your own decisions and stop being internet sheep.

Rotten tomatoes is not the Voice of God. And it's not a scientific method...

It they want to smash a movie they select BAD critics. And If they want a movie to be a success they select good critics...

For instance: STID is a crap movie , but in Rottentomatoes has 87% because they are pro Abrams...

And since they hate Shyamalan, they select only bad critics...

ROTTEN TOMATOES IS A FRAUD

Looks like this movie could have used a 'luck dragon'. Maybe they would have found a better actor than Jaden.

First Will Smith turned down The Matrix for [frick]ing Wild Wild West. THEN he turns down DJANGO UNCHAINED for [frick]ing AFTER EARTH?! This dude is a god damn idiot.

I know it is mean of me but I would love to see this movie fail. I enjoy Will's acting but I can't stand his sons. I know Will wants Jaden to be as good as him. But he just is not. I have been saying this for years if Will wants people to start thinking his son is a good actor Will needs to get Jaden a great acting coach.

With Will's connections he could get someone to help make Jaden do better in films. Plus Jaden should be doing indie films instead of blockbusters. This way he can perfect his craft. Then after a few indie films which makes him better at acting he can go back into blockbuster films.

But Will needs to help his son soon or Jaden's chance at working in films will be over soon. Because who would want to keep putting someone in films who just is not good at all. Which I would be fine with. But if he can learn to be a better actor like his dad then I would be okay with him being in more films. But right now I can't stand him.

Because when you can see actors that are just starting out and in indie films that do a better job at playing a character then him it makes you sick. To see how many blockbusters he gets to be in.

Will Smith needs to stop doing movies with his son. Pursuit of Happyness was great, but enough is enough. It's like a parent who can't let their kid move away from within their shadow. ALSO, Will Smith needs to start making edgier movies. No more science fiction for a long time. His best roles are as the Everyman.

Wow! M. Night really hasn't directed a really good movie in such a long time. I'm thinking ten years, almost. I mean, I liked Lady In the Water, but it seems all the movies he directs, now, are critically panned. Something is wrong with his ass.

The problem was the fact that only two people make up the majority of the movie. That doesnt really sound interesting. Even if one of them is Will smith.

I understand Will was for the most part by himself in I am Legend. But that was an apocalyptic movie which is an interesting combination with Will.
