As promised, director Colin Trevorrow has released his new Jurassic World short film Battle at Big Rock, which premiered last night on FX, online in its entirety for the entire world to enjoy, and it's pretty damn awesome.

The film runs a crisp eight minutes, and follows a young family played by André Holland (High Flying Bird), Natalie Martinez (Death Race), Melody Hurd (Fatherhood) and Pierson Salvador (Gotham) as they embark on a camping trip where they quickly discover that bears may be the least of their problems.

As for dinosaurs, both the Nasutoceratops and Allosaurus feature prominently, and they both look more or less on par with their big-screen countparts as Trevorrow utilizes a combination of practical animatronics and digital special effects to bring them to life on the small-screen.

Trevorrow directed the short, utilizing a script he wrote alongside his Jurassic World 3 co-scribe Emily Carmichael. Larry Fong (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) served as the cinematographer while Amie Doherty (Legion) provided the score.

Additionally, there are also a couple mid-credits scenes that you will not want to miss as they offer more insight on the new post-Jurassic world.

It was alright, better than just about everything we saw in Fallen Kingdom but that's not too hard to do. My favorite part was the Mosasaurus at the end in the credits. I find it hard to believe these dinosaurs would be allowed to run rampant (especially on American soil) without being either captured or hunted, but whatever.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Who knows, maybe they'll address this on the next movie.

Little girl was annoying as hell. This was well made though. That final bit in the trailer was particularly cool.

The concept doesn’t make much sense... Giant ass dinosaurs would be easy to track and kill in North America, and there weren’t that many of them let lose to begin with. But I guess you’re just supposed to ignore it and go with it to see Dino’s and humans living together.

On a more specific nit-pick, no idea how a 6 year old could cock and fire a crossbow at all, let alone twice in rapid succession.

@Chewtoy - all excellent points

@Chewtoy - Also something else that truly bothered me is the dinosaurs. Took me completely out of it. So unrealistic.

@amesjazz - Just because a story has fantasy elements or the like, doesn't mean that it gets a free pass on basic inner-logic and/or suspension of disbelief.

@Chewtoy - Well one point point from JW3 according to the director is that now everyone has access to Dino DNA, so its not impossible that some of these Dinos are different Dinosaurs created by these people as opposed to being the same ones that escaped in the last film, so there would be more Dinos out there than the ones from the last film

@amesjazz - like I said, they want you to just ignore it and go with it to see dinosaurs invading people’s lives. But the original novel and film went to great pains to craft a scenario where people would be threatened by dinosaurs without an easy solution (isolated location, hurricane, computer virus shutting down their systems, definitively not wanting the dinosaurs dead, etc...). Michael Crichton’s writing style wasn’t “who cares how it happens... just do what would be cool!”

I guess I'm just a little confused. In the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy, there were a lot of apes. I don't know if there was technically enough diversity to seed a society, but there were at least enough to satisfy those lacking that specific kernel of knowledge. They were also small, intelligent, and the humans had a much larger problem to deal with in the plague. I feel like 15-20 or so dinosaurs let loose into the wild, most of them without a suitable mate, would be hunted down and eradicated pretty quickly. At the very least, the larger predators would be helicopter machine gun fodder.

@BackwardGalaxy - Something the director said in regards to the next film, is that with the dinos loose, everyone now has access to Dinosaur DNA and they no longer rely on InGen, so there are more people out there creating more Dinosaurs, so from here to the next film there will be more Dinosaurs than they were previously and its not impossible that some of these have escaped

For example the Natusoceraptops, which is the dino that fights the Allosaur here was not among the Dinosaurs in the last film, so these ones had to have been created in the gap between FK and the short

@BackwardGalaxy - yeah, planet of the apes made sense. It was around a hundred apes that escaped, some with intelligence comporable to humans and then the plague soon after wiped out most of the population and mutated more apes. Along with the fact apes reproduce and age quicker than humans, it made sense that a society of hyper intelligent apes created a lasting society and ultimately conquered the planet. Jurassic World is just dumb and makes no sense

What horrible writing. Double crossbow indeed. Make sure the prop team is on board with your stupid writing next time.

Although there's no way that people and dinosaurs could co-exist without one decimating the other; I thought this was pretty cool. Probably the best thing to come out of the franchise since the first Jurassic.

Fallen kingdom was garbage. This was significantly better but the dialogue was awful and the ending with the crossbow...dumb.

I still find the idea that the military at the end of Fallen Kingdom didn’t round up or kill the handful of dinosoars in the span of 8 hours to be incredibly stupid
