As the release of The Matrix Resurrections draws near, HBO Max has debuted a new promo poster for the sci-fi revival.

The image shows Neo (Keanu Reeves) strolling towards a mysterious figure that may or may not be Jessica Henwick's new character. It's not a particularly impressive piece of marketing, but then it is only being used to promote the movie on the streaming service. We should begin to see promotion kick up a gear over the next couple of weeks, and a second trailer should be with us fairly soon.

Neo, aka Thomas, was actually killed-off in the final part of the original trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions, along with Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and while we still don't know how they'll be brought back, director Lana Wachowski recently revealed that great personal loss was the impetus for her deciding to resurrect the franchise's heroes.

“The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first Matrix film… 20 years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind"

Other franchise returnees include Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian, and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson. Also joining the cast will be Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Andrew Caldwell, Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen Hollman, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Christina Ricci, Max Riemelt, and Brian J. Smith.

The Matrix Resurrections will be released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously on December 22.

What I like about HBO max is now I can watch stuff that I would not watch in theaters, ie Dune and Matrix 4. If Dune had cool fighting or if matrix wasn’t part 4, I’d watch em in theaters

At first I thought "isn't 'promo poster' kinda redundant?" All posters are promotional. But then I realized it's to distinguish from the official theatrical poster, and I felt foolish lol

Looks like the aesthetics are definitely than the sequels. Hopefully a bit more of the first in terms of blending mind blowing practical stuff with the visuals. Reloaded had some great parts, don’t get me wrong aka French Art lobby scene, and bits of the highway chase. I like to pull for anything that’s connected to the films, characters, heroes, and actors/actresses we love. The Wachoski sisters made a HUGE breakthrough movie that pulled both sci-fi fans and general audiences together. Peter Jackson kinda went the same route after his success with LOTR. I loved the mixture of practical and cgi in especially Fellowship and The Two Towers. Although ROTK is one of my most beloved, you can see where he starts to overdo cgi elements when practical could have worked. Kong, with its strengths, did the same. And then The Hobbit films :( . The Wachoski’s unfortunately haven’t had much success in terms of execution bc of this massive overload of digital effects as well as story and writing.

This film needs to seriously up its marketing game.

Kinda hyped for this. Just a rewatch of the trilogy for the first time in at least a decade. Sequels weren't nearly as bad as I remember, but man oh man does the ranking go in descending order for me. Three is just kinda boring save from a few things. At least Reloaded had some cool scenes and concepts. Hope this one is really well written above all
