THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Explains His Version Of Morpheus; New Stills Released

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II opens up on his role as Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections, shedding some light on why the character now looks different and commenting on that video game (which remains canon).

In The Matrix trilogy, Laurence Fishburne delivered what many feel is an iconic, unbeatable performance as Morpheus. However, the uber-talented Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to take on the role in The Matrix Resurrections and, given his past work, we're sure he'll do an amazing job.

Entertainment Weekly recently spoke to the actor about picking up where Fishburne left off, and the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star made it clear he doesn't plan to do an imitation.

"Laurence already did what had to be done," Abdul-Mateen II explains. "I think what the script provided was a new narrative and some new opportunities that did make room within the Matrix universe for a new Morpheus." The site asked if The Matrix video game - which is considered canon - affected his performance in any way, especially as the character died there. However, he made it clear that it didn't and he'd "be bullsh*tting" if he said otherwise.

"This is definitely a different iteration of the character," the actor continued. "I play a character who's definitely aware of the history of the Matrix [and] the history of Morpheus. This character is on a journey of self-discovery. There's a lot in our story that's about growth, defining your own path. Morpheus isn't exempt from that."

"What the viewers will come to understand is that there are many rules of the Matrix," Abdul-Mateen II teases. "Age, appearance, the things we identify as real, can be manipulated in that world. The Matrix is where anything is possible."

Needless to say, we're definitely curious to see where this story goes, but it does sound as simple as Morpheus getting a new, younger body (Fishburne has said he wasn't asked to return). It's hard to imagine Abdul-Mateen II will do anything other than a stellar job in the role, though, so this character is no doubt in safe hands. You can get a new look at him in the stills below.

The Matrix Resurrections is set to be released in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.

The leaks all seem to be true when compared to the trailer. If so, I'm not sure how I feel about this...

Sounds like he's saying this isnt a young Morpheus but a new resurrected version of him.

I'm kinda guessing they're keeping matrix online Canon where morpheus was killed in an alleyway by a sewer guy shooting him (seriously) and this is a younger clone of him.

@Origame - Is that part of the game they speak of in this article?

@sKeemAn - oh I didn't see that part. Yes that's what they're talking about. Kinda weird they'd ignore that, since it's an easy out to get a new morpheus in there. But makes sense considering how it happened.

@Origame - that's interesting. Did they find the killer in the game? Or is it possible the assassin can be a side plot to this Matrix movie??

@sKeemAn - it sounds like they aren't following the game so I doubt it'll be revealed there. But he was part of an organization called cipherites who wanted the matrix kept secret.

@BlackStarLord - really don't see that as the case. Ultimately the powers morpheus and the rest of the resistance fighters have are from manipulating the code of the matrix in a bunch of different ways. Sure never to the extent as neo can but they can give themselves any clothes or weapons they want.

Not to mention the wachowskis were toying with the idea of having the avatars be different than the real life counterparts. For example switch was going to be one gender in the real world and another gender in the matrix. This is just a realization of that concept.

I really wish my man Lawrence had come back. I'm sure this dude will do fine...but shit man he was a staple of the originals. It's almost as big a deal as recasting Neo.

I'd say he's a copy of Morpheus made by Neo in the Matrix as a safeguard against the machines

I think the big reveal is that in fact, he is Morpheus Jr. Im sure he's playing Morpheus Sr and Naiobe's son, who needs to rescue Neo and Trin from the Matrix. Yet again.
