New Details Emerge About Ryan Reynolds' Next Comic Book Movie

io9 has reviewed the script for the upcoming comic book movie, R.I.P.D. Find out more details about this project and decide if this comic book adaption is more suited for Mr. Reynolds' talent.

Maybe Ryan Reynolds will have more success with his next comic book movie. Then again, with a CBM filmography of Blade:Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the much maligned Green Lantern, I'm not too sure you want to bet the house on that one. [Regardless of whether you liked the film or not, Green Lantern is a financial failure] However, maybe a CBM with an intentional comedic tone will play more to Reynolds' strengths. Recently, io9 got their hands on the script for R.I.P.D. and it sounds like the lead character in the comic was tailor made for Reynolds.

Here's the best of what they unearthed.

In R.I.P.D., Reynolds plays Nick Walker, a Chicago cop who gets gunned down by his partner, Simon Hawes. And then Walker wakes up in the afterlife, where he's offered a chance to join a secret elite police force: the Rest In Peace Division. So many people are dying nowadays, due to the soaring population, that some of the dead manage to escape from going into the light, and instead hide out on Earth. Walker's job is to spend the next hundred years hunting down the dead on Earth.

Walker gets paired with a veteran partner: Bocephus "Bo" Pulsipher, a former Wild West lawman who died back in the 1800s. There are many, many funny scenes of Bo showing Nick the ropes, including the two of them watching Nick's funeral and Bo commenting on the mediocre turnout. Bo is kind of a grouchy old stick-in-the-mud who idolizes Hoyt Stenson, the lawman he partnered with when he was alive. He's sort of a gruff mentor with a hefty dose of the crazy — and the dynamic between Nick and Bo is not that dissimilar to the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones relationship in the first Men In Black. Zach Galifianakis was originally supposed to play this role but he dropped out and Jeff Bridges signed on to take his place.

Anyway, part of the way the R.I.P.D. move among us unnoticed is that they are camouflaged: when people look at Nick and Bo, they see Nick as an elderly Chinese man. And they see Bo as a statuesque beautiful woman with giant breasts. In one scene, Nick tries to go talk to his widow, but she just sees a Chinese man talking gibberish to her. In other scenes, men keep coming up to Jeff Bridges and begging him to dance in their music videos.

Oh, and whenever the secretly dead get upset or want to exert more power, they turn into monsters, with blobs and tentacles and stuff. They're sort of like monster ghosts, akin to Ghostbusters, but also not that different than the monsters that the M.I.B. hunt in their movies. The R.I.P.D. hunt them down with special guns, firing "soulkiller" bullets, and other special ordinance. There is a lot of mayhem in this film, as the undead cops chase ghosts all over the city and they trash everything in their path.

Without giving too much away, there's more to Hawes than just a dirty cop, and it turns out that a mistake that Nick made when he was alive has a bearing on a potentially apocalyptic case the R.I.P.D. is investigating now.

The newest draft starts with a monologue by Bridges, whom we see bringing in a suspect, and then cuts to Nick planting a tree (and burying some evidence.) Also, the latest version eliminates some minor bad guys and changes the role of Hawes, the cop who kills Nick. And there's a bigger role for Nick and Bo's boss, Procter, who's rumored to be played by Jodie Foster.

Oh, and one thing I like about the movie is that it's made clear several times that there are always more apocalyptic crises around every corner. As Procter says towards the end: "You think this is the only crisis we ever faced? It's just been daisies and unicorns up until last week? The trouble doesn't end with St. Peter's Key. These ancient civilizations practically crapped magical artifacts."

Well, they're obviously trying to create a franchise with this one. This movie seems like a mixture of MIB, Ghostbusters, Dead Like Me, and the anime Bleach. I for one hope Reynolds knocks it out of the park. The guy has had such a hard time with CBM's that I'm starting to feel pity.

There are a lot more details in the script review so click the link at the bottom and head over to io9 if you're interested in reading the whole review.

R.I.P.D. will be released June 28, 2013. io9 speculates that filming could begin any day.

Lantern as a movie was good enough for a sequel. the problem is that people can't think for themselves and so one person says its bad and then everyone slowly begins to agree. Yea it was not great, but your a pretentious ass if you didn't "enjoy" it. It is a fun movie, with a fun story. yea the writing blew ass, but that's WB [frick] up not his.He did fine the writing, directing, and blake lively dragged it down. Good enough for a sequel, but if they want a franchise they really gotta step up their game.

I clicked on the article thinking that it was about GL2

sorry,couldn't resist :P

I don't think Reynolds is box office poison,he just needs a movie with better writing,GL apparently wasn't too good (I've heard, haven't seen the movie yet) because of the writing, not Reynolds himself

What about deadpool?

reynolds making empty promises to us deadpool fans

^@Spidey91 exactly! it wasn't that bad. it was old fashioned entertainment from a movie that didn't take its self too seriously. Everyone wanted "BATMAN DARK NOLAN". if thats what they want then they will never be pleased because Green Lantern as a character just isn't like that.

That's why I thought Green Lantern was bad? Thanks, Doctor.

Reynolds clearly should not be doing the CBM genre anymore. I like the guy, but wrong genre. He clearly doesn't get it...trying to be everyone and no one at the same time.

I actually liked Green Lantern, I thought it was fun. If you're expecting The Godfather, you need to quit taking things so seriously. It wasn't a smart film by any means. It was just fun to watch.

If there were to be a GL2, I think it could actually be something great. One of the problems with this one was that so much of the film was devoted to establishing his universe and character. With a sequel, we wouldn't have to worry about that. With a new team of writers and a better villain, I think it could be great.

RIPD looks interesting though. I plan on picking up the source material sometime within the next few weeks.

And I really hope Deadpool gets moving soon - with Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool is my favorite comicbook character and the script was one of the best I had ever read... I can't wait.

I'd say it's about time Mr. Reynolds respectfully stepped down from his CBM platform. Maybe come back in a few years and do Deadpool, like he's said he was going to for half a decade now. Until then he should branch his way into more dramatic roles. Exercise some range, for christ's sake.

I knew Deadpool was FAR from being close to filming. Can we just get Seann William Scott to play Deadpool & get this in production already? Why are we waiting on Reynolds who keeps getting our hopes up?

I agree the writing was pretty bad, everything else was great. Reynolds as gl was tolerable...loved the action it looked good from a cgi point of view, the sequel will have to up the ante for sure, take a look at Batman begins he drove a tank for the batmobile, outlandish and not as real as everyone rings nolan did with the bat l, bot bashing nolan but he disguises unrwalisric events to make them seem real, look at inception, didn't even feel sci fo but it was totally unreal....oh ya and Jeff bridges roof? Love both can't wait to see how this turns out, hopefully they capture a tone like cowboys and aliens did

oh my god... CURIOUS GEORGE!

Nah, RIPD sounds like it could either be pretty good, or a Ghostbusters/MIB rip-off. Ryan looks sad in the pic, probably because of GL. Hope this works out for him, and then, on to Deadpool.

GL wasn't bad to start with, I actually liked most of the cast, but the second half ruined anything the first half did well IMO. Also, with the way it ended, they should've left the post-credit scene and put that at the end of GL2 with a reason why it happened

@Joker08 Come'on, dude. Give people a little more credit. If you liked Green Lantern, cool. But don't insult people with the It's-not-the Godfather and popcorn movie defense. Some people thought it sucked. Just like you thought it was fun, leave people to their own interpretations. No one expected it to be the Godfather and when I pay good money to see a movie, I'm doing so because I'm hoping to have fun. I don't think the film is Reynolds fault, but there are many problems with it. But now that I've seen it, and know what to expect, I probably can watch it on DVD and have fun with it like you did when you first saw it. I was hoping it was good and was going to start a series of films that would help DC get their roster on track. But it fails needlessly because of the producer and writers. Sorry, dude.

lol 'an intentional comedic tone'...ha so true. GL was ok but just ok. there were a lot of laughable parts--90% of them unintentional...and most of the intentional 'humor' fell flat. The action was ok but too few and far between. The movie played on literally every action/adventure cliche and trope imaginable...let alone every comic book cliche. The movie became predictable and wrought w plot holes. only the kids in the audience really seemed to enjoy it...it really seemed like it would be great if geared towards young kids. Ryan Reynolds has no range of character...he plays himself in everything...just slightly more or less funny...and he and Blake Lively had zero chemistry.
New writers and director are a must...but apparently the guys that wrote the first are writing the second.

Reynold's was miscast as Hal Jordan, plane and simple.

Jordan has never been the boyish, quick witted, joker that Reynolds can't help but play.

And as far as looks, Reynolds has the skinniest, pointiest face on the planet. There's a reason why EVERY comic book artist has always drawn Hal with a rectangular face/square jaw.

Ryan Reynolds needs to make Deadpool priority 1 after this. As much as I wanted to see Green Lantern become a franchise, it didn't do that. Therefore, there's no excuse for Reynolds not to do Deadpool after this. Tim Miller is signed on to direct and the guys behind Zombieland wrote an awesome script. All Reynolds needs to do is show up and act. Deadpool fans are waiting.

Ryan is great, he can act when the script it there, Green Lantern failing was not his fault. I am probably one of the few who actually enjoyed the movie and I am looking forward to an unrated cut (Martin Campbell doesn't care to be part of the movie anymore so it shouldn't be a director's cut) on Blu-Ray.

For a while Marvel had 3-4 different Deadpool comics a month so say the character is popular is an understatement. I would guess that Deadpool will be their focus after The Wolverine if Ryan's schedule allows.
Ne0Baggins
Ne0Baggins - 7/6/2011, 5:08 AM
I think FOX wanted to see Green Lantern succeed for the sake of boosting Reynolds star power. If they don't recast Reynolds for Deadpool, this might be a good thing. If GL was successful, there's a chance Deadpool would be taken into a more campy direction to keep Reynolds on track with his latest money-maker. But now, GL's failure can keep Deadpool on an R rated path and as reckless as it needs to be. Emerging as an anti-hero after failing as a typical hero practically sales itself. It's like Brandon Roth playing a serial killer after Superman returns. You root for them because it's like they're saying [frick] that other shit!
