POSSIBLE SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT
Let us get this out of the way first, personally I do not consider Planet of the Apes a CBM, however as pointed out to me before this site is about Comics, Books, and Movies. In addition, the Planet of the Apes franchise has dabbled in the comic scene in the 70s has even seen the light in one of the biggest comicbook company, Marvel. My thinking also is that most of you here, is in to this kind of genre. Therefore, here is my review for Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
After struggling whether to watch Captain America for the third time, which believe me was a very hard temptation to get by, my wife and me decided to watch the new Planet of the Apes movie. I am familiar with the Charlton Heston movies, but I do not remember it clearly, what is closer to my mind is the Mark Wahlberg/Tim Burton movie which was a good movie then but felt kind of flat. I do not really have high hopes for this movie. Another thing is I am not fond of prequels, because of that “connect the dot mentality”; you already know where you are headed. However, as they say it is not about the destination, but the journey. With that in mind, I gave the movie a shot.
I was not disappointed, though I was not overwhelmed as well. It is a solid movie and straightforward. Apes grew smarter, took arms and fought for their liberation, another thing why I am not fond of prequels is when it starts to really be interesting then the movie ends. However, I am still giving this movie a good rating because of how hard they tried to make the Heston or Wahlberg movie possible, on how that situation can become a reality.
I am not familiar with the director or any of his work, so I am not touching that, and just go on and say that he brought a serviceable movie and give him a friendly pat on the back.
The acting was good, Franco as always does not disappoint, and he is the reason why it was easy to convince my wife to watch the movie. Another memorable acting was of John Lithgow; he poured emotion to his role and was essential to move the movie forward. However, the star of this movie is undoubtedly Andy Serkis, Caesar; he is king of Mo-Cap. His movements are what make the unnatural look so natural. However, we have to give credit also to the other people who brought Caesar to life, WETA digital it is they that we give thanks because aside from Zombie Apocalypse, a meteor hitting the earth we could now add an Ape Uprising to the list of fears we have.
As I said above the CG is good but it is not without its flaws, I guess as Computer Generated images become more advance our eyes develop with it as well, and we go back to that point that we can spot what is fake. I particularly did not like the fog on that final battle; it just did not look natural that time. However, I know that the filmmakers just wanted to add some tension and unpredictability on that situation.
The sound and music I will not comment because I am not really tuned into it.
Overall, it is a good watch, but nothing that will make you go ape-sh@t about it. Now, where is that Captain America?
